Does anyone else think that he is a COMPLETE waste of space...

As I watched MOTD tonight it was really his fault that both of Fulham's late goals went in as he was standing in no man's land! For the deflection he was standing almost at the penalty-spot which he didn't need to do and then for the equaliser he was again way too far off his line and it was then much to hard to save the overhead...

And he's supposed to be the best goalkeeper that England have!?!

When he first arrived to Spurs he was quality. Since then it has just gone backwards. Last season he was poor, and he's started this season even worse.

We don't really have any keeper that stands out. Chris Kirkland is too injury prone. David James has his moments of howlers as well, although he has been quite good for Pompey. Robert Green, Scott Carson and Ben Foster are just too inexperienced and we've got crucial qualifying games ahead of us.

We are literally fooked.

He once conceded the most goals of any single keeper in a single season (85 goals in 03/04 for Leeds, I believe).

He soon moved to Tottenham, where he improved immensely. He concedes nowhere near that many goals.

Quite harsh to lay the entire blame on him. I can't re-call Leeds' team back then, but they might have had some clowns as defenders.

I never did attribute such disastrous numbers entirely to him.

They did have some right clowns... Michael Duberry being one of them. Gary Kelly... Ian Harte... Lucas Radebe... Dominic Matteo...

Radebe :worship:

Him and Tony Yeboah are my favourite Leeds players ever.

Even without any legs at all he'd be better than Robinson. The only reason Robinson gets anywhere near an England squad is because he plays for Spurs. He is absolutely cack, Kirkland and Foster are miles better - he's like David James' worst blunders, constantly.

Robinson for me has never been top quality. I can remember at the time when he was made available for transfer Arsenal were desperate for a keeper but didnt show an interest and his fee was seemingly low for an English player and one who was still quite young and apparently talented. (I think £5m). He has shown to be no more than average and infact your rarely see him making quality saves like say a David James.

I think he has been over-rated from the start and is no different to 95% on keepers who look good a lot of the time but cant cut out the real clangers from their game.

It's one goal, and it went top corner.

TO say he's a complete waste of space is pathetic. You can make mistakes at any time, it just so happens he's made a handful of big mistakes in the past few months.

I have to agree. His positioning, especially from long range shots, is atrocious. He stands way too far from his line, in most cases he's outside the 6 yard box when the shot is made. It means that shots can easily loop over him (if deflected or otherwise, see Nani's goal last week and Smertin's goal this week), which would otherwise be saved if he stood only a yard or 2 off his line. He was again in no-man's land for Kamara's goal, which again looped over him because he was too far off his line.

It is about time he's dropped from the England sqaud, we may not be blessed with world class keepers at the moment but the likes of Carson and Kirkland aren't making the same clangers as Robinson is.

I've never rated Robinson, even when most were so far up his arse. Check previous threads for evidence ;)

His dealing of crosses and positional sense is very poor and it's things like these that cost teams games.

To be fair, most coaches goal keepers will tell you to stand a few yards off your line to give yourself a better chance of making a save.

What, the england game someone mis cued a cross and he was caught out, most goalkeepers who want to command their box would have been round about 2 yards out.

Yesterday, he was well psoitioned to save the shot I thought, the shot takes an unlucky deflection and loops over him, and then someone scores a quality over head kick right in the top corner.

I just wouldn't blaim him too much for them as I think a lot of goal keepers would have been in the same position.

Still, I agree in that he's probably not agile enough to be top quality goalkeeper for club and country, also I would pick James ahead of Robinson for England as he's looked quality the past season or two.

I see what you are saying, and yes to an extent I agree that keepers shouldn't stand on their lines all the time, but there is a difference between standing 2 yards off your line and standing more than 6 yards off your line, as Robinson is prone to do. When you are two yards off your line you have an extra second (or fraction of a second) to react to deflections or long range shots, and you are closer to the goal so you can adjust your feet and get closer to making the save. Also, being 2 yards off your line means there is less chance that the ball will loop over you and into the centre of the goal.

I know I'm being pedantic, but you you watch closely at the goals that Robinson has conceded recently (Nani and Smertin particularly), if he wasn't so far off his line I think he could've saved them.

Yeh I see what you mean but msot people make it sound like keepers shouldn't leave their line, watching Hendo too much.

And you could say if he was standing where the ball went he could have saved it :P

Davis James comes steaming off his line today to give away a peno after 6 mins and they score the peno. Not many keepers are mistake free thats for sure!

Well James certainly isn't mistake free! That said, he's been a much better keper than Robinson for the last 18 months. Ive not actually read the entire thread (sorry) so i don't know if this is about England or not. If so, Foster when fit, James for now. If not about England then yes, i think Robinson's pretty poor and certainly overrated. Good shot stopper, not much else.

Yeh bit of a Taxi moment there lol

I'd still have James over Robbo.
