France National Team

Many people (especially when I go overseas) seem to have a problem with the fact that the French national team is made up by large numbers of African born players. Even earlier this iirc, when France played Lithuania away the Lithuanian fans displayed a banner of the African continent in the French tri-color.

French players who are African born, top of my head. I'm sure there are many more.

Claude Makalele - Congo

Florent Malouda - Guiana

Patrick Vieira - Senegal

Samir Nasri - Algeria

Lassana Diarra - Mali

Abou Diaby - Ivory Coast

Zinedine Zidane, although retired - Algeria

Whats your views on this?

Depends. I don't know enough about their players histories to say for sure.

If they're lads from French colonies that have largely been drafted in in their later teens / early twenties to play for the national side using residency / distance relations then I'd be sceptical. If they're simply lads who have emigrated to France from a young age then they've as much right to call themselves French as anyone else, I guess.

Most of them are players' who's parents migrated to France when they were kids and grew up just like any other French kid. Just like the two Polish lads who are playing for Germany, but nobody seem to question their inclusion to the German squads. The French seem to be a victim of their own recent success in world football I would say.

Here's the banner I was talking about.

Fair play to them tbh.

They was raised in that country and probably regard it as home so they would jump at the chance to represent them at National level.

I'd love to see the reaction of some English fans if this happened to England, You know the whole keep st george in my heart keep me english brigade.

Thats true to an extent but in French football, they sign plenty of African youngsters from the French speaking countries. The lower leagues are full of them! It makes sense I suppose as they don't take as long to acclimatize.

I don't see what the problem is anyway to be honest. In an ideal world you would have to represent the country of your birth but every country abuses the system when it suits and we can all remember Ireland trying to find anyone and everyone who got within 50 miles of their country as possible future Irish players! Countries like Poland and Turkey have played Black players who weren't born there and all sorts of countries play "nationalized" players and continue to abuse the system whether its Japan playing a Brazilian or Croatia doing the same thing!

How about this then...

Alan Lamb

Greg Rusedski

And Terry Butcher was born in Singapore I think so he should never have played for England. :D

It's all to do with heritage - distant or otherwise.

Ryan Giggs could have played for England, but chose Wales (the tw@t).

And what about Canadian Greg FFS!!

Personally, it would make it all simpler if you are only allowed to play for the country in which you were born.

None of this grandma's 2nd cousin's son crap.

Born here,play here.

Born Congo, play for the Congo (Where would the French be then, eh? eh?)

Um Bongo, Um Bongo.

Do I really have to do this again? Seriously? Do I ACTUALLY have to do this again? I want you all to know, in advance, that this is as boring for me as it is for you. Ok... here goes.

FOR. FCUKS. SAKES.

RYAN. GIGGS. COULD. NEVER. HAVE. PLAYED. FOR. ENGLAND.

GET. IT. INTO. YOUR. THICK. SKULL.

The only way Ryan Giggs could have ever have played for England was through the VERY shit residency laws which WERE NOT CREATED until after he'd had about five or six years worth of caps.

RYAN GIGGS' PARENTS ARE WELSH.

RYAN GIGGS' GRANDPARENTS ARE WELSH.

RYAN GIGGS WAS BORN IN WALES.

RYAN GIGGS WOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ELLIGIBLE TO PLAY FOR SIERRA LEONE THAN ENGLAND.

Ryan Giggs played for England SCHOOLBOYS. SCHOOLBOYS. BECAUSE HE WENT TO SCHOOL there. This is not an official national team, or even close, get. It. Into. Your. Heads.

[/the end.]

ps: Michael Owen = Welsh, Welsh, Welsh.

Cnuts.

Similarly, England Under-21 coach Lawrie McMenemy checked to see whether he was eligible to play for the nation. Contrary to popular belief, Giggs could not have played for the full England national side. He was only eligible to play for the England schools' team because he went to school there. To play for the England national football team, he would have needed to have been born in England or have had English parents or grandparents. However, both his parents and all four grandparents are Welsh.

Freddy Eastwood is English but playing for Wales. And I'm sure there has been lots of Kiwis playing for Wales RU team.

Eastwood I can't deny, but then again - Vinnie Jones? Both had Welsh grandparents (but then who doesnt?)

As for the Kiwis, that was about ten years ago and an inquest had them all ousted, keep up with the program! Sonny Parker's the last one floating about, and he hasn't really played since Gavin Henson's autobiography labeled him a plastic Welshman. lol

Kent Fox mentioned Ryan Giggs again,

Poor ol' Moderator Finnegan,

Thats the thing you know. Nobody is mentioning Germany, Turkey, Japan etc for having 'nationalized' players. But I assume is due to the fact the French have actually won major tournaments in recent years.

Unfortunately the idiots in backward countries like Lithuania who probably only see black people on TV will continue to come out with daft banners or be racist to black players on the pitch. Other countries who may be regarded as more civilized have seen there fans be upset when black players have been called up to the national squad. I cant remember the guys name but there is a central midfielder who was called up for Italy and there was a bit of uproar when that happened. Im not sure how the Spanish reacted to Senna playing for them as they have been known to be quite a racist bunch although of course I don't suggest that they are all racist!

I think the argument even effects people domestically though. I can remember being in a pub with mates and some idiot Spurs fan was so anti-Arsenal that he decided to bring race into it and said they are just a squad of n*****s and it all kicked off when some of the Arsenal fans took offence. The fact is that even over here, in cosmopolitan city such as London, some Arsenal fans cant get there heads around the amount of black players they have at "their" club, never mind the Spurs ones. The sooner the governing body ban these almost racist flags or racist remarks from the terraces the better. Fining them 2000 Euros or something pathetic will never act as a deterrent but thats FIFA for you!

Don't agree with that, if you were born on a 2 week holiday in Spain that would mean you would have to play for Spain?

An example is Beckhams lad, Are you saying that if he becomes a pro footballer he has to play for Spain?
