PAULCFC Posted 10 September 2007 Posted 10 September 2007 Did Ultra say he was a member? While its true that you do not need to be a card carrying member to know and enjoy real ale a lot of members join because they do. Some go too far though by carrying little bottles to festival, pour half their drink into it, label it and stick them into a cupboard at home. What a waste. I don't class myself as an expert. I forget which beers I've had sometimes and who brews what. Let us all just drink and enjoy it be it as a member or non-member. The ale tastes the same no matter what your status is. Saw some weird looking bloke doing that(putting the ale into a little bottle at the Leicester beer festival.....Weird!Been for Holiday down the south west and found out it was the south Devon beer festival .It started on Thursday last week,so after a bit of convincing the wife that Newton Abbot was a great place to visit we went.Brilliant setting, you could take your pint(or half for me.......remember misses!)out on to the stand next to the `course.
Daggers Posted 10 September 2007 Posted 10 September 2007 My mate suddenly got into real ale and started asking to "try" samples before he bought a pint in a pub. What a dick.

Lord Nibblington Posted 10 September 2007 Posted 10 September 2007 Yeah - buy a half, you tw at.Or better still, just buy a pint. If it's that bad, complain. Or con the Ginge into swapping with you.* *Only works if you are drinking with the Ginge.
Kent Fox Posted 10 September 2007 Posted 10 September 2007 My mate suddenly got into real ale and started asking to "try" samples before he bought a pint in a pub. What a dick. I have wandered into a few pubs in the past whereby if one asks the friendly Northern barmen what the whatever-ale is like, they often ask you if you'd like to try it. I am all for that attitude. Shows that they are not afraid for you to try their well kept ales before you buy. However, I have never asked to try...
Daggers Posted 10 September 2007 Posted 10 September 2007 However, I have never asked to try... I took him to one boozer and he was there for bloody hours at the bar pissing about and not getting the round in. It's not acceptable. Dick about if you are on your own, that's one thing, but not when you have thirsty mates waiting to sup before closing time!

Dick about if you are on your own, that's one thing, but not when you have thirsty mates waiting to sup before closing time! Now that is truly out of order. Tight mates really piss me off. I have one of those. Always says he's skint until a magic fiver appears at kebab time. Bas***d
Rincewind Posted 11 September 2007 Author Posted 11 September 2007 I can't remember asking for samples but occasionlly when I ask about a beer the bar staff tell me I can try some. However when I helped out at the Leicester Festival I was behind the bar a lot so I was having a few tasters before I poured my free drink. Well didn't want to waste the beer tokens now, did I? I remember one girl asking for a taster which I was happer to give her. She tried about four or five then said 'Ill try a drink from another bar.' Cheeky sod. Taking advantage of a non-experienced barman. This one advantage of being a member. Free beer if you help out at a festival for a few hours. What with the discount Beer Guide, cut price entrance to beer fests, free beer (if you volunteer your services) you soon get back your anual fee. Not bad if you can avoid the worst elements of CAMRA members.
Ultra Posted 11 September 2007 Posted 11 September 2007 I hope Youngs is included in that. No, it moved to Bedford last year. I think it may have merged with Charles Wells.
