Megson?????????????????????????? Oh dear lord If we are stuck with the twerp then I sincerely hope he proves us all wrong and does a really good job. The bloke is going to be on a hiding from the off. Some will be wishing Allen was still in the chair and the rest will just be gutted to be sold short of the rhetoric from Mandaric with the appointment of Megson. The only factor that can dig the pair of them out of their collective hole is results, no one can argue with them, although it wont take very many dodgy ones to get a fair few calling for the pair of them to go. I really hope for Milan's sake this one does not go the way I fear it will.

Ozwin Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 I know we wont, but it's just annoying that we got him when we could have got someone like Paul Jewell if Mandaric offered a contract he couldn't refuse. Instead we've gone for a manager who in my opinion won't do bugger all for us. He's been out for what, 18 months now which means he'll take time to get used to the football and I think with Martin Allen we'd have been fine. He was the worst on my list of managers, on par with Roader so I'm allowed to be somewhat dissapointed right now.
lucozade Posted 13 September 2007 Posted 13 September 2007 Hello there. I'm a curious Forest fan; not looking to cause trouble, but merely intrigued by this appointment. There are a few points in Megson's favour: when he inherited Joe Kinnear's side we were already doomed to relegation, Kinnear hardly ran a tight ship and the players basically behaved as they chose. Megson was sure he could keep us up, but he had bitten off more than he could chew. We didn't blame him for that. His problems really started when he put his own squad together. He released droves of 'deadwood' and spent in excess of £2m with little effect. By the time he left us we were in the club's all-time low position; four points off the League One relegation zone with one win in 10. More worryingly from your perspective, he basically faced an insurrection from the players he had signed. He rules with an iron fist and is actually something of a bully; there came a point when he was quite literally being ignored by the playing staff. He often blames 'shocking things that I've never experienced before' when speaking of his days at Forest, but the only thing he is referring to is the fact that the players grew tired of his approach and shut him out. Frankly he was an arse hole for the sake of being an arse hole; banning mobile phones on the team coach, training on away day mornings as punishment. Modern day professionals just won't put up with this stuff. Megson always speaks articulately and is brutally honest, but that's every compliment I can pay him. His footballing approach makes Micky Adams' Leicester side look like Brazil. Perhaps this won't materialise in the first few months, but you can ultimately expect gruesome long balls, clearances into the stand, and eleven men behind the ball at 1-0 up. We would rather have Martin Allen every single day of the week. As for Tuesday, it could go either way. Either Megson will be so determined to stuff us that you will, or his former players will be so determined to stuff you that we'll pick up where we left off the other week. Good luck, you're going to effing need it.

This is a "Grind Out Promotion" appointment aimed, not at filling the ground and making Season tickets the equivalent of 24 pure gold but at protecting Mandaric's investment. Why is it Leicester always appoint such negative former footballers for their managers. Defenders, destroyers, people who's principal purpose in life was to stop the opposition playing? Where is the magnetic attraction especially after years and years of failure with those sorts of managers and those sorts of players? Wikipaedia describes our new manager thus thus: "As a player, Megson was a tough-tackling defensive midfielder, and something of a journeyman, playing for nine different clubs." Hardly uplifting. And basically he's been exactly the same in management - solid, wholeharted, but creatively limited. Taggart's little different. More interesting to listen to maybe but an ordinary professional who made the best of his abilities and yet another defender. As a coach he's still a learner but the hope seems to be that something from the MON "This Is What You Do" book on preparing players rubs off. However, it should be remembered that MON had John Robertson, a confirmed and shrewd attacker. To me the Megson/Burrows/Taggart appointment is about as attractive as a day trip to a water treament works. I doubt it will work and nor will much else until we commit ourselves to someone who believes in attacking like Keegan or Newell and who has no fears about trying to make their philosophy work. Expect though free-kicks and corners to involve a multiple aerial bombardment via Kisnorbo, McAuley and DeVries or the equivalents. Megson's managerial record: While still playing at Norwich City, Megson became assistant to manager John Deehan. He briefly left the club following Deehan's sacking in 1995, but returned to Carrow Road later the same year when new manager Martin O'Neill left to take charge at Leicester City. Megson managed the Canaries for the remainder of the 1995–96 season, but was let go at the end of the season. In 1996, Megson became manager at Blackpool where he recorded only 21 wins in 52 matches. At Bloomfield Road, he was assisted by the former Manchester United midfielder Mike Phelan, but the partnership failed to bring a Division Two playoff place to the Seasiders, and Megson left at the end of the season. Megson moved to Stockport County in 1997 and they came just two places short of the Division One playoffs in his first season as manager. After two reasonable seasons with Stockport, he was dismissed after the board alleged that he had applied for a manager's post elsewhere without their permission. However, he wasn't unemployed for long, taking the manager's job at Stoke City. His tenure at the Britannia Stadium was brought to an end when the club was sold to an Icelandic consortium which appointed its own man, former Iceland national-team coach Gudjon Thordarsson, to the manager's position. West Bromwich Albion Megson took over as manager of struggling First Division West Bromwich Albion towards the very end of the 1999–2000 season with barely time for him to organise a few key player transfers before the deadline. Albion narrowly evaded relegation by winning their final game of the season and Megson was immediately hailed as a hero. The following season, he took the club into the playoffs. In the 2001–02 season the club won promotion to the FA Premier League, overcoming the eleven-point lead of bitter local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers in the closing weeks of the campaign. This achievement earned Megson the Nationwide Division One Manager of the Year award.[1] However, the club was barely prepared for the financial challenges of life in the top flight and a bitter quarrel soon developed between Megson and the club's chairman Paul Thompson over the latter's perceived interference in footballing matters. An undignified public showdown resulted in Thompson resigning from the board in order to forestall Megson's departure. Jeremy Peace took the opportunity to establish himself as Thompson's successor. In July 2002 Megson signed a new three-year contract with Albion.[2] However in 2002–03 the club were relegated after just a single season in the Premier League. Peace's financial prudence enabled Megson to mount a successful promotion campaign, and return to the Premier League the following season – but by the summer of 2004, the relationship between the two men had become strained. With a poor start to the season, by September, Megson's job was under threat. The following month Megson, whose contract was due to end in June 2005, announced that he would not sign a new deal at the club if offered one. On 26 October, Megson was dismissed by West Brom.[3] A settlement for the remainder of his contract was reached in November 2004.[4] Nottingham Forest Within a week of being sacked at West Bromwich Albion, Gary Megson was linked with vacant manager's job at Wolverhampton Wanderers after Dave Jones was sacked – but that job went to Glenn Hoddle instead. Megson was then appointed manager of struggling Nottingham Forest on 10 January 2005, succeeding Joe Kinnear,[5] but was unable to save them from slipping into the third tier of English football for the first time. Promotion back to the Championship was to be his priority for 2005-06, but Forest struggled, especially away from home, for most of the season. In terms of points they were nearer to the relegation zone than the playoff zone when he resigned in February 2006 after being put under a lot of pressure by the Forest fans.[6] He claimed that his resignation had cost him £500,000.[7]

For me though, this looks like Mandaric couldn't get anyone he wanted that was already at a club and had to settle for second best... well I say second but it was probably around 6th!

Forget the crap attached to Davies, Burley and the others in employment. Who would have been an appointment that would have been head and shoulders above the rest?
