Mark Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 Smarties set to lose their tubeChildhood may never be quite the same again - the maker of Smarties has announced it is to ditch the colourful chocolates' tube-shaped packet. Nestle Rowntree is to replace the beloved 68-year-old cylindrical design with a hexagonal or six-sided pack. The removable plastic lid on the current design will also go in favour of a cardboard flip-top. Nestle Rowntree said the revamp was needed to ensure the brand remained "fresh and interesting" to youngsters. Space rockets Smarties have been sold in a cylinder-shaped packet since the sweets were first launched by Rowntree's of York in 1937. They were originally called Chocolate Beans but were renamed a year later. Since then empty tubes have been used by creative children to make everything from space rockets to castles, while the removable plastic lids were collected for the letters of the alphabet that were imprinted underneath. The new so-called Hexatube packet will go into stores during the summer. This is just WRONG
Guest Daniel Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 Terrible news. Im going to stock up on tubes, ready to sell on ebay.
Nationwider Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 Smarties set to lose their tubeNestle Rowntree said the revamp was needed to ensure the brand remained "fresh and interesting" to youngsters. It's a tube full of chocolate. How much more f***ing interesting do they need to make it? They may as well just put a picture of Neil Warnock on the front of the packet and have done with it. B****ds. I've got a mate who works for Nestle. I'm going to punch him in the throat for this.
davieG Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 Whatever excuse they give I guarantee it's to increase the profit margin, the replacement will be cheaper to produce.
Anish Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 Let's all boycott the new Smarties and start a petition to bring back the tube! That'll show em!
stez Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 i bet nowt'll happen just like with salad cream etc etc all due to change or go. gets them publicity then sales go up
Wellman Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 BOOOOOO, the best thing about Smartie Tubes is that u can pop the lid out at the end!!!
emmalcfc Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 BOOOOOO, the best thing about Smartie Tubes is that u can pop the lid out at the end!!! 71515[/snapback] Yeah, and have a competition to see whose goes the furthest. And then the winner gets another tube of smarties. Not that I ever won
stez Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 yeah but if they still have the plastic tops then you'll still be able to do it (thats ifit happens of course) ignore me, i only 1/2 read petrscus first post

Cat Burger Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 Down with Nestlé. If you see a Nestlé employee, remember you have the right to make a citizen's arrest. Death is another acceptable outcome...
stez Posted 26 February 2005 Posted 26 February 2005 yeah but the new 'hexatube' looks bigger so you'll be getting more smarties. and don't forget nestle also brought us the kit-kat chunkey surely thats a good enough trade off
