Kent Fox Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Reading some reports this morning got me thinking about this problem. Some reports are saying that obesity is more dangerous than smoking. Smoking Others are saying that it is a part of 20th century culture, a consequence of modern life. The latter came from a Government think tank. Consequence I am sure there are other links on this topic all voer the 'net but thought I'd start with these. So how do we deal with the problem? Who is at fault - people / culture / Government? One radical step to think about - if the Government saw fit to ban smoking from public places, should obese people be banned from fast food chains? Is that a part of the answer? Is that too ridiculous? Not necessarily, I think, but I am not wanting to post my opinions just yet. Should exercise become more easily accessible for people? Should the Government ensure schools increase sport and physical education slots? Discuss.
Raj Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 We cant blame EVERYTHING on the Government can we??? People must be responsible for their own actions and in the least their own health! Too much molly coddling and blame someone else in this country. Take Responsiblilty for your own actions i say! Get out, exercise, eat less, drink less alcohol, eat your greens and w@nk less... Tis easy really!!!!

Phube Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 The fat gits who eat lots and excercise little!!! One thing that I do think would help is if with the nutritional facts, they put statements like "No. of minutes running to burn off this choccolate bar = 35" on food. I meant I have a Physics degree... and calories/joules mean nothing to me!! (It's the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of water 1oC!!) but in food terms pointless... We've all been on a piece of fitness equipment for 30 mins, sweating our unmentionables off, only to be told we've burnt approx. 150 calories!!! That's like 1 mars bar!! That'll get the fatties thinking!

Could the Government do more in waking people up to the dangers of over-eating / eating the wrong foods any better than they have done??
Geo V Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 When it comes to kids, the parents are to blame. Lazy parents are too busy to care these days and stuff their kids with all sorts and help them to develop bad habits which become difficult to kick in later life. Obviously the Xbox culture as Harry Redknapp of all people called it the other day is harming kids. The best way to combat obesity with kids is to bring back the National service. I'm not joking BTW! It still happens in Cyprus and the kids out there go training for a couple of years but come back at weekends. They develop good habits and you don't have fat kids coming out of the army. National Service also helps young lads become men and not the little shites that walk around happy slapping people and mugging old women that we see on the news over here every day. As for the adults, gyms are too expensive and not as accessible as they should be. There should be a huge national push by the government to fill local church halls and clubs with free classes from circuit training to Pilates classes. That would then help the gyms bring down there prices as in some cases they ask silly money and people just cant afford it. I would target unemployed people too as I know some people who are out of work who get depressed and end up eating and then haven't got the confidence or the right mindset to look for work. If they had free gym membership or access to training classes I'm sure they would be more likely to be in the right frame of mind to get a job.
Raj Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 But you dont even need expensive gear to exercise do ya? Just basic walking is a good starter. get some half decent trainers and off you go
Joe. Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Who's to blame? Parents (in a child's case). It's as simple as that really. Kids will only eat what they're given, and if it's constantly crap they're being given then it's obviously going to make them fat. If it's an adult who's obese then they only have themself to blame unfortunately.
Guest Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Oh come off it! Are you seriously telling me that any adult in this country, if asked which was the healthiest meal out of a Maccy D's extra large value meal, and a homemade chicken salad, sans dressing, that there would be people who pointed to the Big Mac? The obesity problem in this country is down to a number of attitudes that are becoming more predominant in our society. 1) Failing to accept responsibility for one's own actions. 2) Taking the "easy" option. 3) Wanting more than one possibly needs. Blaming the Government, lack of education etc, are just excuses.

Guest Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 But you dont even need expensive gear to exercise do ya?Just basic walking is a good starter. get some half decent trainers and off you go Exactly. Start now, and you could be running next year's half or even full marathon!
Rincewind Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Whose to blame? McDonalds and the Americans. Should exercise be made more easily available? It is. People just have to put away that car for the trip to the corner shop. I saw where the French are becoming fatter. They used to pride themselves on healthy eating but since they have benn fast-food-Americanism their average weight has soured. Personally I don't make a cocious effort to excercise, like going to the gym or running 5 miles every day,, but I do walk to and from work and other places that I go to. I do not drive. I don't eat a lot of chips or fast food. Pizzas and chinese if I do. Anyway I am not a lover of McDonalds burgers. I find them tasteless. According to my height I am overweight but I do not regard myself as obese. It is not immediately obvious. I have not weighed myself for a while but I am 5.10/11 and around 14st. It is up to the individual. Unlike smoking being obese does not harm others. You cannot die from passive eating and obesity Fast food chains love obese people because they are their best customers. They are hardly gonn turn them away.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 I think its the brewries for making such nice enticing products
Guest Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Whose to blame? McDonalds Why? Do they drag people in off of the streets and force quarter pounders down the mouths of poor civilians? No they don't.
Geo V Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 But you dont even need expensive gear to exercise do ya?Just basic walking is a good starter. get some half decent trainers and off you go Its like anything in life mate, the simple things make people feel better! If I said to you here is a £300 voucher, go and get your haircut, buy new clothes from top to toe you would come back a few hours later feeling sharper even though nothing has really changed! People who are depressed and down in the dumps at times need other people to kick them up the backside or to even believe in them to actually move on. Its easy for those of us who are currently doing OK to say "just go for a walk or run" but most people in life need targets or something to at least look forward too (as sad as that sounds).
Master Fox Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 I think it’s going to be bloody brilliant. They say that in 20 years time 50% of population are going to be Obese!!!! That’s fcking great. 45 million obese people walking around doing fat people stuff!!
Raj Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 Exactly. Start now, and you could be running next year's half or even full marathon! :D my achilles still hurts! Got my Mrs to rub it yday..........AND the achilles too!!!!
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 This is good, the governmant can attack fat gits. That should mean it's at least 5 or 6 years before they come after us alcholics.

Kent Fox Posted 17 October 2007 Author Posted 17 October 2007 Time to play Devil's Advocate.. Who's to blame? Parents (in a child's case). It's as simple as that really. Kids will only eat what they're given, and if it's constantly crap they're being given then it's obviously going to make them fat. If it's an adult who's obese then they only have themself to blame unfortunately. Peer pressure is strong in younger kids. They hear about it at school and want it. Advertising McDonald's, KFC and Burger King on TV during Scooby-Doo, for example does not fall on deaf ears. They see the ad. They see the toys they give away. They want. They recognise the Golden 'M'. For non-obese parents, it makes it very difficult to contain.. Oh come off it! Are you seriously telling me that any adult in this country, if asked which was the healthiest meal out of a Maccy D's extra large value meal, and a homemade chicken salad, sans dressing, that there would be people who pointed to the Big Mac?The obesity problem in this country is down to a number of attitudes that are becoming more predominant in our society. 1) Failing to accept responsibility for one's own actions. 2) Taking the "easy" option. 3) Wanting more than one possibly needs. Blaming the Government, lack of education etc, are just excuses. I don't disagree, Lisa, but it is possible that some people may believe a Big Mac is good for them. You only have to read McD's own propaganda to realise that. It could be that people really just do not understand anymore what is and isn't healthy. You say it is about attitude - so are you agreeing it is the culture of modern society that is to blame? Exactly. Start now, and you could be running next year's half or even full marathon! But where is the motivation? You, and many others, don't need the motivation. Obese people will walk half a mile, get really knackered, say "sod this" and go eat something. People likethat might need encouragement to exercise. Where do they get it? Just thoughts, people. Still not necessarily what I think.
Zingari Posted 17 October 2007 Posted 17 October 2007 no-one is to "blame" , it is just another health "problem" that is facing society and the individual as a result of modern lifestyle, and the problem can only be solved by a combination of efforts by both society and the individual .
Kent Fox Posted 17 October 2007 Author Posted 17 October 2007 When reading that I thought "Maybe they should consider banning fat people from public places too" was coming next I did think about writing that
