Fox in a Box Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 http://www.lcfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Lates...1203260,00.html Leicester City boss Ian Holloway today completed his first capture since his arrival at the Walkers Stadium when he confirmed the signing of striker Barry Hayles from his former club Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee. And the marksman goes straight into the Foxes' squad for their Championship clash against QPR on New Year's Day after City revealed that the player had initially joined on an emergency loan deal. Hayles, who scored an impressive 14 goals for the Pilgrims last season, has penned an 18-month contract, which will run from January 2. Article continues Advertisement The Jamaican international has been a regular goalscorer at each of his previous clubs - notching up 181 goals in a career that has taken him from non-league with Stevenage Borough to the Premiership with Fulham. It will be the third time that Hayles has worked under Holloway - having been introduced to league football by the City boss during his time at Bristol Rovers in 1997. Holloway said: "Barry brings experience, hunger and desire to this football club. "It doesn't take a genius to work out that he is just the sort of player that we need. We have got a lot of young strikers at the club - including Matty Fryatt, Iain Hume, Ashley Chambers, Ricky Sappleton and Eric Odhiambio. DJ Campbell is 27, but he hasn't played that many games at this level during his career to date. "He is an exceptional goalscorer and he has proved that at this level and higher. He has got a one in three goalscoring record at every level he has played at. "I'm absolutely delighted that he has agreed to join us." Hayles first came to prominence during his time at Stevenage Borough - where his incredible record of 55 goals from 83 starts tempted Bristol Rovers to part with £250,000 to acquire his services in 1997. The striker continued to progress, and after finding the net 36 times in just 75 games under Holloway with the Pirates he was on the move again - this time to ambitious Fulham for £2million - a then record fee for a third tier club. His arrival at Craven Cottage tied in with the Cottagers' rise up the leagues - and he would become a Premiership player when they reached their goal in 2001. Hayles formed a memorable partnership with French striker Louis Saha, and scored 12 times during his first season in the top-flight. All in all the centre forward made 216 appearances for Fulham before moving on to Sheffield United in June 2004. But his stay at Bramell Lane would be a brief one, and the London-born striker got a move back to the capital at the end of August that year to join Millwall. The rejuvenated Hayles scored 17 times for the Lions before joining up with Holloway once again at the start of the 2006 campaign. In total he made 66 appearances for the Pilgrims - scoring on 16 occasions.

DB11 Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Good to see Holloway has started building his own team. However I'd much rather see the arrival of Fulop first
DBEightyFive Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Didn't realise he'd only been playing professionally for 10 years - 181 goals in 10 years.
Matt Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I got in first on this one http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=45489
Geordie Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Good and he can also operate out wide as well. Time is up Mountie.......
Simon Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I got in first on this one http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=45489 TECHNICALLY Walkers was first with this one; he just posted in the Stevie Howard thread!
Simi Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Good and he can also operate out wide as well. I know, at the same time!
The Stig Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I will reserve all judgement until I have seen him play, however going by his goalscoring record that seems a good signing. Oh and this will mean more Plymouth fans coming on here with their imaginative names, e.g Hollowords as Ollie said he wouldn't be signing Plymouth players! I don't see why he shouldn't, he needs to look after his club, not his old one.

I expect there are a lot of people from Plymouth who are waiting for cheques in the post, confident that their arses don't look big and with a rather unexpected taste of man fat in their mouths...

If thats the case, so did Sturrock- he said he wouldn't be selling us ANYONE. Anyways, pleased with the Hayles signing, he's the kind of good solid pro we need at the club IMO.

I was on that crap forum they have the other day and I heard a brilliant insult. "That lieing little snake Holloway" That made me laugh!
HollowaysToilet Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 Expected this, regardless if Holloway stated he wouldn't pinch our players. Not sure though if he is right for your type of club, but He gives his all but when you have a lot of games in a short space of time he feels the pace IMO. Best of luck to him at your place i had no problems with him down here, but felt that Ebanks Blake and Easter will have kept him out based on the performance against stoke, so good move for him.

He's not pinched them, he's bought them. And it works two ways you know, Plymouth have to accept an offer.
HollowaysToilet Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 He's not pinched them, he's bought them. And it works two ways you know, Plymouth have to accept an offer. I didn't mean it like that, but yes we have to accept an offer that's why it didn't shock me Holloway making a move for him again and us (Plymouth Argyle) accepting it. I suspect we made a few quid on him too
Staf Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I will judge him when i have seen him play a few times
Shrew Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 i think this is a good signing for lcfc! living down in cornwall i sometimes get to watch plymouth and everytime ive watched him play he's always in defenders faces and costantly closing down and always causing problems. does get alot of bookings but is a very dedicated player. also heard a while back holloway saying what a good coach he would make for the young players when his playing days are up. Definately the kind of playre that'll boost morale as well. good signing!
Mark Posted 31 December 2007 Posted 31 December 2007 I thought Ollie wasn't going back to his old club? I'm not sure what Hayles can offer us at this stage in his career that Elvis Hammond can't, but I suppose that shows how much I don't rate the player more than anything else. Averaging a goal every 12 games this season. Doesn't matter who is up front, we've still got no capable attacking midfield players to open up a team and create a chance or two for them.

I do believe Howard will do a good a job for us, Not sure about Hayles? Perhaps bring on late in a game if we need it? Howard probably one of the better striker's we've signed in recent years (Although apart from Cort, I've thought that about many of the strikers we have signed in the last few years) but same old problem - What's the point if you midfield still isn't going to provide. I will accept Hoofball for the short-term but hopefully we do have some midfielders who will provide lined up.

While i agree with the latter part of your comment about attacking players to create chances i dont quite agree with the hammond comment, he hasnt exactly set the world alight anywhere he has been, where as barry hayles has always been know to score goals and be a in your face striker!! For me... This is a god signing for us at this moment in time... You will see!!

Please welcome the new Junior Lewis Howard, I can just about stomach... but Hayles
