Hopkins v Calzaghe

The long-awaited fight between Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe will take place in Las Vegas on April 19. The announcement came on Wednesday as the two will fight at Thomas & Mack Center.

Both of the fighters' camps first discussed the opportunity of this fight six years ago, but it never materialized.

The bout for Hopkins' Ring magazine light heavyweight championship will be Calzaghe's first fight at light heavyweight after 21 consecutive world title defenses at the super middleweight division.

After unifying three world titles by taking the WBA and WBC titles from Mikkel Kessler on Nov. 4 to move his record to 44-0, Calzaghe has to move up a division in order to face Hopkins.

Hopkins, who is 48-4-1, last fought in July last year when he scored a victory over Ronald "Winky" Wright.

Before fighting Wright, Hopkins had retired in 2006 after a career highlighted by 21 straight middleweight title defenses and a stunning win over Antonio Tarver at light heavyweight.

Both fighters are getting up in age as Hopkins is 41 and Calzaghe will turn 36 before the fight.

The fight is expected to draw 18,000 fans at the Las Vegas arena. It will be televised by HBO in the United States.

Awesome.

Interesting.

Box office or Setanta?

Calzaghe is unfortunetly contracted to Setanta, so this will probably mean that Sky wont have as much hype about the fight like Hatton Mayweather.

On the other hand I presume it'll be cheaper than Sky Box Office and you get the channel and more programmes on the channel for a month.

(£9.99 for a whole month on Setanta, Or Sky Box Office with just the fight repeating for the weekend for £14.95)

Also (I've never order Setanta so not sure) would you get Setanta News (Like SSN) in with the £9.99 or is it a seperate subscription? Because you'd probably get the same build up on that as SSN did for Hatton. :dunno:

As cartman once said, 'RACE WAR!'

Seriously you guys, it should be a good fight.

Is this cos Hopkins said(allegedly!!)

"I aint losing to no white guy"???

Tis is only pre bout bullshit as usual.

Hope no one makes it into a white V Black thing.

Although me just having posted that, has highlighted the fact abit more hasnt it???...oh well..... :)

Think Joe may find it a little harder than people think.(although i aint suggesting that he wont win!)

Is it? Didn't know that, I'll have to check it out later. Thought you had to subscribe to watch it, TBH i've never looked into it, I've heard about it but never attempted to watch it really.

Well when our Sky broke for a bit, we still got some channels, the free ones I think. We still got Setanta News, although it's fairly shite.

What a nightmare it would be if the Yanks started cheering if their man beats another of our champs. Joe is past his prime and stepping up in weight and I must admit I'm worried for him.

Lets hope he can win over there.
