the_bowman Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 I just got a book that analysis statistics of players, and uses these to statistically select the best players of all time, best teams etc. Just thought it would be interesting to share it's statistically "Top 10 Players" and see if we agree. 1. Pele 2. Ronaldo 3. Romario 4. Luis Figo 5. Zinedine Zidane 6. Diego Maradona 7. Lothar Matthews 8. Gerd Muller 9. Franz Beckenbauer 10. Cafu I've got loads of other things, might get round to discussing them at some point too.
Jack Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 1. Pele 2. Eusebio 3. Zidane 4. Maradona 5. C. Ronaldo - I know it's early on in his career but I really think he is that good. 6. Best 7. Ronaldo 8. Bergkamp 9. Ronaldinho 10. Kaka
the_bowman Posted 19 February 2008 Author Posted 19 February 2008 1. Pele2. Eusebio 3. Zidane 4. Maradona 5. C. Ronaldo - I know it's early on in his career but I really think he is that good. 6. Best 7. Ronaldo 8. Bergkamp 9. Ronaldinho 10. Kaka I'm no expert on football history, so I won't comment on that, but I would agree that C. Ronaldo will go far, and I really expect him to. Even being the greasy slime-ball that he is
Joe. Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Sorry mate but Ronaldo's some way off being in an all time top 10 list yet.

Here is my own list: 1.Maradona 2.Roberto Baggio 3.George Best 4.Pele 5.Zinidine Zidane 6.Di Stefano 7.Mario Kempes 8. Stoichkov 9.Hagi 10.Romario In my opinion Pele was not the best, ok he was a special player, but he never tested himself in europe and spent all his career in Brazil (apart from his spell in America) Roberto Baggio is one of the most un-appreciated players to grace the beautiful game, check some of his highlights out on youtube and you will see why!! Stoichkov and Hagi made it on my list as they transformed there respective countrys and put them on the map in a way, both very similar players, outstanding ability!! Again you can see some excellent videos of them on Youtube...
lildave3 Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 How can you say All time? The best player in history could be someone from the 1920's, and nobody would know. Besides Thracian (Sorry Thrac )
Jack Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Regarding my all time 10, I can only go on what I have seen and with not being that old I will not know about quite a few players that you all do
Joe. Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Regarding my all time 10, I can only go on what I have seen and with not being that old I will not know about quite a few players that you all do I'm only 16 too, but I still wouldn't put Ronaldo in. Or Kaka. Or Ronaldinho. Or Kaka. Sorry mate
Jack Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 I'm only 16 too, but I still wouldn't put Ronaldo in. Or Kaka. Or Ronaldinho. Or Kaka. Sorry mate I take it you wouldn't put Kaka in then
l444ry Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Don't know who compiles these lists but anyone who omits Johann Cruyff it is obviously a pork pie short of a picnic.
LeeCovFox Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 No particular order, as all were great at what they did: Pele Diego Maradona Johan Cruyff George Best Eusebio Alfredo Di Stefano Ferenc Puskas Zinedine Zidane Michele Platini Franz Beckenbauer. That list is based on things I've seen and heard, so here is a list of those who make the top ten of players I've seen in my own days as a football fan, again, in no particular order: Zinedine Zidane George Weah Roberto Baggio Juan Sebastian Veron Hristo Stoichkov Gheorge Hagi Christiano Ronaldo Ronaldo Paolo Maldini Gianfranco Baresi Ryan Giggs and Matt Le Tissier both came close for me, the latter being scandalously under employed for England, and largely targeted as a scapegoat after a 1-0 defeat by Italy at Wembley in World Cup qualifying. That was very difficult for me to compile. In just 15 years as a football fan, there have been so many reasons to be captivated, and thinking through the players I have seen, only reinforced that.
LeeCovFox Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 I'm only 16 too, but I still wouldn't put Ronaldo in. Or Kaka. Or Ronaldinho. Or Kaka. Sorry mate Ronaldo was stunning at his peak mate. His PSV and Barcelona days, and his first two seasons at Inter, make him deserving of a place in any list of this kind.
Jack Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Ronaldo was stunning at his peak mate. His PSV and Barcelona days, and his first two seasons at Inter, make him deserving of a place in any list of this kind. I think he was on about Cristiano Mate
lildave3 Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 Well, Zidane is the best player of my lifetime. No question. Ronaldo is second for me. I think anyway, when making lists like these you always forget someone blatantly obvious.
Thracian Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 So difficult - and how do you compare modern players with older ones, goalkeepers with strikers? Anyway I've erred towards the most exciting of (mostly) my time Pele Ronaldinho Cruyff Bergkamp Romario Cristiano Ronaldo. Garrincha (The Little Bird) Alfredo Di Stefano. Gerd Muller George Best. Honourable mention to: =============== Zinedine Zidane Ferenc Puskas Marco Van Basten Lev Yashin Maradona Sir Tom Finney Sir Stanley Matthews Eusebio Dixie Dean Matt Le Tissier Romario Gento Jimmy Greaves. Sir Bobby Charlton Franz Beckenbauer
ASH17LCFC Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 No Zico ?! The white Pele Best team never to win a world cup was the Brazil team of 1982. Maradona should be number 1 in my opinion. C. Ronaldo got along way to go yet. Not won a world cup, a euro or the champion league. Players like Maradona have single handly won world cups. They are great players.
LeeCovFox Posted 19 February 2008 Posted 19 February 2008 I think he was on about Cristiano Mate Ah. I missed the "yet".
Nationwider Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 So difficult - and how do you compare modern players with older ones, goalkeepers with strikers? Anyway I've erred towards the most exciting of (mostly) my time etc etc Honourable mention to: =============== etc etc Dixie Dean etc etc At first glance, I genuinely read that as Lee Dixon and had a near fit of hysterics. I need to get my eyes tested.
l444ry Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 I've always wondered why, when these lists are compiled, wee Jimmy Johnstone never rates a mention. At the very least on par with George Best and as entertaining as any player mentioned in this topic.
Tommy G Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 It's a difficult one. I'd say the best player of the last decade would have been better, people would also be able to relate to it more.
lildave3 Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 It's a difficult one.I'd say the best player of the last decade would have been better, people would also be able to relate to it more. Yeah but i'm fairly sure that would leave at most 3 answers, 1 of which would be Zidane over and over probably.
Tommy G Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 Yeah but i'm fairly sure that would leave at most 3 answers, 1 of which would be Zidane over and over probably. Shit what I meant was the best 10 players of the last decade. My mistake.
Darkzzz_ Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 Like i said before i really hope i am not the only one who thought Pele was not the greatest player ever! I am far to young to have seen him with my own eyes, but based on stacks of videos and dvds, plus the modern day youtube highlights, i would say Maradona and Baggio were the best two ever... Thats in my opinion anyway. I did get to see Baggio play when i was very young, about 12, he was amazing... The most un-appreciated footballer by a mile, and it is a shame he is remembered for that penalty miss in the 1994 world cup instead of the real reasons why he was a true great of the footballing world!! Pele in my opinion was a fantastic footballer, but like i said in a previous post he never tested himself in europe!! So on that basis i would say he would be 3rd or 4th in my list!!
shen Posted 20 February 2008 Posted 20 February 2008 In no particular order, a list based on players I've seen (well aware there are players not mentioned out there with huge reputations): Maradona Zidane Ronaldo Ronaldinho Michael Laudrup T. Henry Romario Roberto Baggio Michel Platini Dennis Bergkamp With honorable mentions to Stoitchkov Hagi Shevchenko Maldini Giggs Figo Gerrard Schmeichel Okocha C. Ronaldo
