Poor old Gretna

I feel sorry for their potential folding but they've had to rely on that one man and his money for so long.

In ways they are like Chelsea in that they've spent a lot of money compared to their "lower" rivals and worked their way up the leagues.

And we and a few others are in a similar boat, this is the downside to this one 'rich' man one club syndrome - ultimately it's likely to be bad for the game because surprise, surprise rich men get bored, or poor or die!

They built on sandy ground - Spend, Spend Viv Nicholson's.

Wonder who it reminds me of.

Bollocks.

They spent years in the Northern League, occasionally playing to crowds of under 100. The entire population of the town is at most 3,000 (half the size of Mountsorrel, approximately).

They embarked on a silly little adventure thanks entirely to one man's money. That man has now gone (from football).

The current club will die, but a new Gretna football club will shoot up in it's place at the base of the pyramid and those 100 or so hardy souls who used to watch Gretna play the likes of Billingham Synthonia, Seaham Red Star, Esh Winning and Tow Law Town will be able to do so again at their leisure.

This is not a problem.

In other words they'll get their soul back and wave goodbye to all that is so tasteless about football these days.

Brooks Mileson their chairman is basically dying in hospital. He bankrolled their rise completely. As soon as he was out of the equation Gretna were always going to be doomed. Sad but it was always going to happen eventually.

Exactly. The natural order will be restored. No doubt some will be disappointed, but the football seismometer will barely tremble. It all looks a bit silly now anyway.

Gretna FC will make a fine Brit Com a la The Full Monty one day, probably starring Ewan MacGregor, Sean Bean and Colin Firth.

Oh Christ! I never realised it was that bad.:cry:

Bit sad, but it was always going to happen like this if Mileson became ill. I just thought they'd have planned for that a bit better so they could finish off the season then keep going next year with massive cutbacks.

At least they managed to complete their game yesterday even if they are just making up the numbers.

They've done really well on getting to the SPL so it's a shame it's come to this. They should have used their money a bit more wisely though and not over spent. They relied on one man for too long.
