Guest Posted 16 March 2008 Posted 16 March 2008 Four weeks today, I will be running in this year's London Marathon. Some of you have already noticed my sig (many thanks to Scoweh, Daggers, JTB, and Raj) but I am raising money for Asthma UK. Why Asthma UK? Around 5.2m people in the UK have the condition, including myself. As well as finding a cure, Asthma UK raise awareness of the condition. I cannot find the statistics, but there are a large number of deaths each year, most of which are preventable. This isn't just the self-inflicted either, it's lack of awareness of new drugs and therapies that would be of benefit. Why the London Marathon? I have watched this race since I was a child, and seeing people who have overcome more difficulties in life than I will hopefully ever face has inspired me. I have always loved sport, but thought I was pretty crap at school due to my lack of fitness. It wasn't until I was 17 that I found out that my "lack of fitness" was in fact asthma. Since then, and receiving the right treatment, I have taken up running. I enjoy it, and it's improved my lung strength and increased my peak flow. Whilst I'm no Paula Radcliffe (who has the same type of asthma as me, and is patron of Asthma UK - shame she pulled out), my aim is to finish in under 4 1/2 hours. I would appreciate it if you would take the time to visit my sponsorship page and sponsor me. It doesn't matter who much or how little, every bit counts, and hopefully one day, asthma will be a thing of the past. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, and I'm one of the "lucky" ones! For those on Facebook, I have a support page - here. Please feel free to join! Many thanks.
Guest Posted 17 March 2008 Posted 17 March 2008 Thank you! Thanks also to Mr Pops, Karim Benzema, Alexei, Davieg and Hullfox. The pressure's now on.

Daggers Posted 17 March 2008 Posted 17 March 2008 I still have not been told which fancy dress costume La Lisa is planning on wearing. It'd better be a kangeroo. Boy, if it's not a kangeroo then I'm gonna...I'm gonna...grr...It just better be, alright.

You can either agree to raise a minimum amount (usually £1,500) with a charity through the Goldon Bond scheme. Or you can enter via the ballot, if you're not lucky, when you've been rejected 4 times, they let you in on the 5th (has to be consecutive). I had banked on this option, however they rejected me just the once. I still have not been told which fancy dress costume La Lisa is planning on wearing. It'd better be a kangeroo. Boy, if it's not a kangeroo then I'm gonna...I'm gonna...grr...It just better be, alright. No comment.

Head Honcho Posted 18 March 2008 Posted 18 March 2008 Mate of mine done the 10k for sport relief on sunday and came 15th he would have had a good chance of winning it if he hadn't have done 7 laps instead of the required 6

Guest Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 I ran a mile today.5mins 50secs....Hows that Lisa? Run another 25.2 miles at that pace, and you might make Beijing!
General Smuts Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 I ran to the bog in time to vomit in less than a second. Im a natural athlete
Floating Fox Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 Run another 25.2 miles at that pace, and you might make Beijing! Whats a good marathon pace per mile?
Nationwider Posted 19 March 2008 Posted 19 March 2008 Whats a good marathon pace per mile? I'll be aiming for a cup of tea and one Mint Club every 6th mile. Set your stall out with an early biccy at about 9.30. You should be on your third by the time the wheelchair race has finished. Preferably with the Sunday papers.

Dont forget the obligatory "infront of the TV snooze"...complete with abit of spittle oozing down the chin!!! Or is that just me???
Guest Posted 20 March 2008 Posted 20 March 2008 Whats a good marathon pace per mile? Someone like Radcliffe would be aiming for 5min miles. If I average under 10min miles, I'll be happy. All this talk of lie ins and Club biscuits is not fair.
Guest Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 Thanks to Ibbyfox!! Yesterday saw the end of "Bastard Training Week" - it involved running for about an hour every day. It involved interval sessions that were based on miles, not minutes. It cumulated in a three hour run yesterday. It was horrible. I can now look forward to the "wind down", gradually decreasing the training to almost nowt the week of the marathon. Apparently, I will be tempted to run, when instructed not to. I must resist.....
Guest Posted 28 March 2008 Posted 28 March 2008 Just over two weeks to go, folks!! Please sponsor me!! It's a bloody good cause!
