Rincewind Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 Arthur C Clarke has died. Good author and a knowledgable person. Worthy of a cautious RIP I think if only for the legacy he has left past and future generations and that have inspired other writers and film-makers.
Webbo Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 I thought he died last weekend. Anyway, I used to enjoy that programme he had in the 80s but i couldn't understand '2001 a space Odyssey '. Unfathomable and boring I'm afraid.
Rincewind Posted 22 March 2008 Author Posted 22 March 2008 Well hes died again then. They were just saying tributes were coming in. I never knew he died. Thought was gone already years ago.
Zingari Posted 22 March 2008 Posted 22 March 2008 i think its all about space and time relativity and schrodinger's cat or something he was both dead and alive for the week until someone opened the box

Alexikokopops Posted 23 March 2008 Posted 23 March 2008 And the multiple allegations of child abuse? Which he was cleared of?
Daggers Posted 23 March 2008 Posted 23 March 2008 Which he was cleared of? Nope - they were dropped. A salient difference. The country had him as a trophy, there was no way they were ever going to prosecute him - after all, what do they care about the human rights of his victims?
Rincewind Posted 23 March 2008 Author Posted 23 March 2008 allegations does not mean he was guilty. Otherwise we'd still have lynch mobs and the hanging tree. Allegation just means that somebody has pointed a finger. However you want to twist things it amounts to the same thing. He was not prosecuted. So it cannot be said that he was a child abuser.

Ken - re-read my short and simple posts. They are perfectly easy to understand. I have not "twisted" anything and nor has the term "child abuser" been used you used it in the post that I have just quoted. Not only that but I also suggest you do a small amount of reading in order to appreciate the background to the allegations and the context within which they were made.

Daggers Posted 23 March 2008 Posted 23 March 2008 You're a salient difference. Only because I caught it. From your Mum!
Rincewind Posted 23 March 2008 Author Posted 23 March 2008 And the multiple allegations of child abuse?
Zingari Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 it all just goes to show that you can't trust foreigners . if they're not making up false allegations, then they're trying to cover up genuine ones

Was Arthur C Clarke responsible for all that then? Well you learn something every day. I supposed if you read between the lines you can see that it really refers to the aalegations that were mentioned.
Vacamion Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 I think that fair and open judicial procedure is over rated. For me, like millions of others, it is sufficient proof of guilt if someone "looks the sort". Mr C.Clarke did look the sort. Case closed.
Rincewind Posted 24 March 2008 Author Posted 24 March 2008 It seems that if someone visited that country and was accused of a crime but was never charged becaused lack of evedence they'd be guilty anyway because the country has a poor record regarding human rights.

Daggers Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 I think that fair and open judicial procedure is over rated. Your knowledge of the judicial system of Sri Lanka is enlightening. It seems that if someone visited that country Close, but no Blue Peter badge. He lived there.

Daggers Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 i agree , but what if someone who "looks the sort" is accused by a "foreigner" in a foreign country , who do you believe? Gary Glitter, obviously.
Rincewind Posted 24 March 2008 Author Posted 24 March 2008 Your knowledge of the judicial system of Sri Lanka is enlightening.Close, but no Blue Peter badge. He lived there. I'll finish the quote for you. and was accused of a crime but was never charged becaused lack of evedence they'd be guilty anyway because the country has a poor record regarding human rights. If a member of your family lived there and was alledged to have committed child abuse you weould assume them guilty then if any charges were dropped? Anyway the man is dead. Any past crimes guilty or innocent are no longer valid. Let him rest in peace without wild accusations after life as well as before. His writing in non-fiction and fiction will live on and inspire many more great writers.
Daggers Posted 24 March 2008 Posted 24 March 2008 Anyway the man is dead. Any past crimes guilty or innocent are no longer valid. Let him rest in peace without wild accusations after life as well as before. Nonsense. There is no disputing the massive contribution he made to science fiction and science fact - but debating the allegations are valid whether he's dead or not and whether you like it or not. Again, your use of the word 'wild' demonstrates your wholesale lack of understanding of the issues involved in this matter - It is obvious that you still have not bothered to read up on the background so I think it is pointless me trying to debate this with you.
