lildave3 Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Well I got 2 rounds off the internet before it ****ed up. Come on 5 live. <_< Managed to get it sorted again. This is not going well though.
Barry Trotter Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Shocking performance by Calzaghe, very lucky to win.
Barry Trotter Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Think Hopkins has had a few too many blows to the head in his lifetime, whats he on about??
Finnegan Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Think Hopkins has had a few too many blows to the head in his lifetime, whats he on about?? dunno that was funny. Still, 116 111? Hmmm. We're very, very lucky imo.
lildave3 Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Wasn't the greatest fight but i'm sure as hell glad I watched it.
Guest Mickyblueeyes Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 I know this is going to rub some people up the wrong way but.... I was supporting Calzaghe but how he won that comfortably according to one Judge is unbelieveable !!!! Look at three major things 1)Knock out - Bernard 2)Knocks/cuts - Bernard is literally untouched 3)Gameplan - Calzaghe was wild and at sometimes clumsy, Hopkins out of the two mastered not only the pace of the fight but landed the more telling blows.... The interviewer made the point that Calzaghe was the guy who connected more punches against Bernard then any other competitor yet Hopkins had no cuts nor was he at any point in the fight rocked you've then got to question the power and precision of those blows.Im disapointed because that was probably the last fight of a Legend and its unfortunately ended on a sour note. As for Joe, though I hope its not the case,if thats the best he can offer against the Big boys he is well and truely fooked...Roy Jones/Antonio Tarver etc must have been watching this thinking what the hell was the big deal.
SamL Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 I agree with LD3, it wasn't the greatest fight but I think the best man won. Well done Joe Calzaghe.
Finnegan Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Thing is Mickey, what a lot of people forget I guess is that boxing's not just about being the man that knocks the opponent out. It's about the score card, points for punches and Hop threw very few, really. And no judge is ever going to score you well for slowing the game down and generally trying to screw around with them that much. It never looked too much like the "wily intelligence" of Hopkins, really, it looked like an older boxer knowing he needed to break the flow of a younger, quicker puncher and desperately trying to do so. I agree it seemed to look like Hopkins was more effective, more damaging and I agree the decision was surprising. I was convinced Joe'd lost, to be honest, but having had time to sleep (barely) and reflect I can understand the decision I guess. Shame it wasn't more prolific.
Raj Posted 20 April 2008 Author Posted 20 April 2008 For a non Yank to get a points result in USA is almost as rare as LilDave3 with a friend!! So well done Mr Joey,i didnt think he'd win but he will now gain a legendary status no mater what. BUT people who were writing Hopkins off cos of his age should be ashamed. AS Barry Hayles proved yday,if you can do it,age has no boudaries!!!! In a wayi hope Joey retirs at the top as a fight with Roy Jones IMO is a no win situation.
Geo V Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Both past there prime and further evidence that Joe should have been fighting more big names when he was in his prime 2 or 3 years ago. I hope he retires at the top before he gets hurt but well done on the narrow win anyway.
Barry Trotter Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 2)Knocks/cuts - Bernard is literally untouched Most of them caused by Hopkins head.
The Reverend Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Calzaghe was lucky. Very lucky. I agree with Finners though, B-Hop (what a name, btw, brilliant) is nothing but a spoiler. Calzaghe went at him, and you get rewarded for that when it comes down to it. Welldone Joe
Finnegan Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Disagree on Roy Jones, tbh. His career's been more of a mess lately than Hopkins. Hopkins is more of a pro, more of an athlete, he might be old but he's fit. Who has Jones beaten recently? Felix Trinidad who was already three years retired at the time. Joke. And he wants to fight him in Cardiff? Something tells me Roy Jones Jr must have blown all his money.
Head Honcho Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Calzaghe was lucky. Very lucky. I agree with Finners though, B-Hop (what a name, btw, brilliant) is nothing but a spoiler. Calzaghe went at him, and you get rewarded for that when it comes down to it. Welldone Joe I disagree. Joe was in control from the fifth round and apart from the first round never looked like losing.
Sparky Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 I thought he had lost it or the judges would bottle it and call it a draw , in fairness after round 4 Calzaghe was the fighter on the front foot and threw far more punches , fair play to Calzaghe . Think id fancy a crack at Antonio Tarver now
Finnegan Posted 20 April 2008 Posted 20 April 2008 Think id fancy a crack at Antonio Tarver now What, you personally?
