Three men sentenced to 21 years

Three men have today (01.05.08) been sentenced to a total of 21 years at Woolwich Crown Court for a series of armed robberies in Bexley.

Sheku Kamara from Abbey Wood, 20 years of age, was sentenced to eight years imprisonment, Alieu Jallow from Abbey Wood, 19 years of age, to eight years imprisonment and Olatokunbo Fasina from Erith 18 years of age, to five years imprisonment for the robberies at gunpoint, which targeted members of the public in Abbey Wood and Thamesmead in November 2007.

In passing sentence, the judge described the men's actions as well-planned and intentional banditry of the worst order. He commended the arresting officers for their bravery and the investigating team for the professionalism of their work.

The three men were identified and arrested, in late November 2007, after local police increased patrols and CCTV was monitored in response to a spate of similar robberies in the area during November 2007.

The victims of these robberies were threatened at gunpoint and had credit cards, cash and other valuables stolen. They would then be forced to provide their PIN and one of the robbers would go to a nearby cash machine and withdraw money.

Fasina, the first to be arrested, was apprehended following a robbery on 28.11.07. At approximately 23:00 hrs that night, the victim was making his way on foot along Maran Way towards Abbey Wood railway station, when he was approached by the three men. The victim stated all three had handguns and forced him to sit on the ground before robbing him of his wallet and mobile phone. One of the men then put the gun to the victim's head, cocked it and demanded the PIN for his credit card. The victim, afraid for his safety, provided it. Fasina then left for cash machines near the railway station and the victim, after being held by the remaining two men for a short while, was allowed to leave.

Unknown to Fasina, officers were monitoring CCTV around those cash machines, and were able to observe him using the machines before arresting him on suspicion of robbery.

Kamara and Jallow were arrested following a further robbery two days later on 30.11.08. At around 00:15 hrs two officers in plain clothes on foot patrol in the vicinity of Maran Way came across two men, later identified as Kamara and Jallow, standing either side of a third man sitting on the ground. They were in fact in the process of committing a gunpoint robbery. As the officers approached, the man sitting down called out to them for help, shouting "Armed Robbery!" The two officers identified themselves as police officers and Kamara and Jallow fled on foot. The officers pursued them, assisted by other officers patrolling the area, and after a lengthy chase on foot both Kamara and Jallow were arrested.

Following the arrests, Bexley's Robbery Unit launched an investigation - Operation Thames - to uncover the extent of the three men's involvement in the other recent robberies in the area. Officers viewed hours of CCTV seized from the area, examined data from the mobile phones of the arrested men, and examined clothing and property recovered from their homes.

As a result of these enquiries and admissions made by the men in interview, officers were able to link them to numerous other offences.

Kamara was charged with five counts of robbery and five counts of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Jallow was charged with five counts of robbery and five counts of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. Fasina was charged with two counts of robbery and two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Two firearms believed to have been used in the robberies were also recovered during the investigation, a gas-powered airsoft gun, modelled on a Smith & Wesson pistol and a .177 calibre air pistol.

DS Gary Wingrove, of Bexley Robbery Unit, said:

"Fasina was arrested due to the rigorous use of CCTV by officers, while his accomplices Kamara and Jallow were apprehended thanks to the brave actions of both their victim and the officers who gave chase, despite being faced with two armed men attempting to evade capture."

"Their arrests were supported by the subsequent investigation, which ensured their connection to other robberies in the area could be proved."

"Thanks to the efforts of all those involved in the operation and the courage of the victims in coming forward, today sees these three determined criminals taken off the streets of Bexley."

Sheku Kamara is a pro/ex-pro aswell.

Aye, he's a 20 year old defender who was released by Watford.

Long time 'til he next gets released

By the time he gets released, we'll be playing non-league football at the rate we're going. :P
