danny. Posted 28 March 2012 Posted 28 March 2012 Bollocks you had got my hopes and morale up now I am a crushed man!!!! I've found a training plan I like the look of so by the time October comes around I'll be doing 20mile runs. Am I right in believing that in the lead up to a marathon I should never actually need to run the full marathon distance beforehand? You'll be fine, you have ages to train! Very important though, learn how to run now - before you pick up bad habits. I know that probably sounds crazy as you know how to run, but when you are doing miles and miles a week you need to learn properly to avoid injuries, and also run as economically as possible. It's not really much like football which is mainly sprinting/jogging/walking, just a constant pace throughout. Most 'seasoned' runners are awful at running, half the people at my running club have terrible technique and at races loads of people run terribly. This is a great video with most of the basics if you can spare 4 and a half mins to watch:
FoxesAreBlue Posted 1 April 2012 Posted 1 April 2012 Very good video Danny.. Did anybody else do the Leicester 10k today? My stopwatch stopped after about 15mins so I have no idea what time I did and the results are taking ages to be published - grrr! How did you all get on, and how bloody HOT did it feel? Even though at the finish I could see my breath I was still boiling! I also took the opportunity to park my car with my Personal Training vinyls all over it in the football pitch carpark to hopefully give myself a bit of free publicity and also ran in my PT shirt too so maybe, just maybe something will come from that.... Doubt it though!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 1 April 2012 Posted 1 April 2012 Results out, I came 35/508 with a time of 44:03... Not that happy really, worse than I thought I suspect there are people here who could have/did beat me... My 20miler is next weekend, then taper taper taper!!!! Next race is London now, very nervous and excited together!

Doubt it though! I did. Got 40:32 and came 15th. You can knock a minute off your time as the course was long by about half a kilometre! Bloody annoying as I should have finally broken 40 minutes!
reynard Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 Not me. I did my 20 mile training run. I now hurt. Well done Lisa. I did my 20 miler on Saturday. Went as I thought it would ie slowly and painfully. Now to taper avoid injury and not meet anyone with any nasty colds etc etc.

Ozwin Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 What routine should I use for building fitness for football?
vandamman Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 Triathlon season starts soon. Hoping to enter a few and do better than previous. Doing some interval training at the gym to get me into the swing of things which I am enjoying. Slowly and surely getting back out running the roads but after a winter in the gym, i'm finding it hard...
Guest Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 Well done Lisa. I did my 20 miler on Saturday. Went as I thought it would ie slowly and painfully. Now to taper avoid injury and not meet anyone with any nasty colds etc etc. Thanks, and a good luck and well done to you too! This taper is hard work; 6.5 miles this morning, then 7 tomorrow, 6 on Thursday and 4 on Friday!
Fmfox Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 What routine should I use for building fitness for football? Depends where you're at already. Try to mix up your runs eg. Jogging then 3/4 then Jogging then sprint then jogging etc as this will help you in both cardio and also in your power for those sprints to the ball

Jogging then 3/4 then Jogging then sprint then jogging etc as this will help you in both cardio and also in your power for those sprints to the ball I'm alright as it is but it'd be nice to be able to last longer during games before feeling totally gassed. I would say I'm pretty fit as it is but yeah, I kind of just want to get out there and run while it's nice (well it wasn't today but y'know). I think instead of tying down a routine I should just get out there and do it. Always one for the formalities me.

I found that the thing I've made biggest strides in fitness from is reps of a few minutes. eg. 3 x 10 min at a hard pace, 4 min break in between. 5 x 6 min 2-3 mins off etc etc, I like to mix up the time/distance just to keep me from boredom but I don't know how well it translates to running as I'm not much of a runner.
Ozwin Posted 3 April 2012 Posted 3 April 2012 I'd love to take part in some local runs too, but I don't really know how that works. Can anyone just turn up and run or are they charity driven or what?
danny. Posted 4 April 2012 Posted 4 April 2012 I'd love to take part in some local runs too, but I don't really know how that works. Can anyone just turn up and run or are they charity driven or what? They are generally all club runners, I'm not sure how you would run them if not in a club as you pay through your club etc. not charity driven at all, most running/races, marathons aside, isn't anything to do with charity
Guest Posted 4 April 2012 Posted 4 April 2012 Sites like Runner's World or Fetch Everyone have lists of races, and should have links to give details on how to enter etc. Non-club runners can enter most races, but will pay a higher fee for not being affiliated. If you look further back through this thread, a few posters recommend the Park Runs, which I think are free, but you need to register for. They are 5K, and should be good if you're starting out.
Guest Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 I've woken up this morning with a virus. Should be running 6 miles today. Part of me says, 'do it', part of me says, 'be sensible, leave it'.
Guest Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 If it wasn't on my chest, I'd be tempted. Damn asthma. Having driven to MK and back, I'm tempted to go to bed and sleep this disease off, which would be better for me.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 5 April 2012 Posted 5 April 2012 Lisa!! You know you shouldn't do it, you won't lose any cardiovascular fitness by missing a small 6 miler yet would risk your health getting worse if you do!!
Guest Posted 8 April 2012 Posted 8 April 2012 I know, I know... I waited until today, 15 miles scheduled. I still wasn't feeling 100%, so turned down a race place (Belvoir), to do the sensible thing of try on the treadmill. A good job really, as I had to stop after 4.5 miles due to the pain in my chest. As an aside, Andy, I really, really feel for gym staff, and the crap that they have to put up with from members. After aborting my run, I went on a recumbent bike (the positioning is better for my asthma). There was a guy on a normal bike next to me, wearing a Leicester City shirt, ginger/strawberry blond, with glasses, on the bike next to me. After he'd finished, he walked off, leaving the bike dripping with his sweat. It made me feel sick, yet bloke didn't come back and clean it off, no, he just went and spread his sweat over other pieces of equipment. FFS, PEOPLE, CLEAN GYM EQUIPMENT AFTER YOU'VE SWEATED ALL OVER IT. LAZY ****WITS!!

FFS, PEOPLE, CLEAN GYM EQUIPMENT AFTER YOU'VE SWEATED ALL OVER IT. LAZY ****WITS!! Thanks! I feel I should point out that there are many members who are absolutely brilliant though. Many come and say hello, some do put their weights away and one guy who came to me once had spilt his drink, he apologised for creating work for me and absolutely insisted that I let him mop it up! He just wouldn't let me do it! More like him please! One thing about working in a city centre gym is I get recognised when out and about I town on my lunch - and as I see a food few hundred faces a day I don't always recognise people when they stop for a chat, which took a bit of getting used to, usually they're interested in what I've got for lunch and disappointed when it's just a bog standard sandwich! For all the dickheads, I do love my job, which is more than they can probably say about themselves so winner winner chicken dinner for me! Now onto a bit of a less up-beat note... I am writing this from a horizontal position on my sofa. Have just been out for my attempted 20miler but I had to abandon at 17 miles because I could hardly stand, let alone run. Now by chance I did forget my lunch today even after getting up early to prepare it before work but now I start the taper and the marathon is in two weeks and the max distance I have ran is 18 miles. IM 8 ****ING MILES SHORT!!! To say I'm disgusted with myself is a ****ing understatement, I've ****ed now.
danny. Posted 9 April 2012 Posted 9 April 2012 You don't need to run 26 before - you'll be fine! My legs are also killing today after doing Belvoir HM yesterday, with hardly any training (been so busy at work had no time to run), lactic burn! Hope you are feeling better soon Lisa, you missed a lovely race yesterday but def. made the right choice!
reynard Posted 9 April 2012 Posted 9 April 2012 Andy You've done 18 sounds like you are a good runner. You will be fine. Just decide now on an achievable finish time and stick to it. Remember this is your first marathon. Hold your nerve, don't rush off. If you are on a 10 min mile schedule stick to it (this is just for eg), certainly for a good way round. If you feel good later in the race you can always pick up the pace but don't be tempted to start this too early on. Most people take longer by abut 10 mins over the second half so try and allow for this in your timing. I know you know all this but it is vital to taper now. I know you wanted to go further in training but you have banked an 18 and a 17 miler and that will be in your legs in a fortnight. It isn't just about physical fitness now it is about mental self belief as well. You've done the training so you have every chance of succeeding. Lisa Sorry to hear you've got a virus. Don't push yourself too much as you won't gain much extra fitness now. Tapering is a nervous time for everyone. Get yourself better before you do much more.
