FoxesAreBlue Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 That's excellent news, glad Silverstone is now achievable. Am after a bit of advice - I have felt some slight pain on the exterior of my right knee when running for some time and have booked through my GP to see a physio. I suspect it's a ligament strain due to running with trainers that were fit for the scrap heap. Only problem is it will take 2-3 weeks to arrange a consultation. Should I pay to see a specialist sports physio now? Do they provide a better overall service to warrant the cost? It's driving me mad not being able to run my usual distances so I don't want to delay having a consultation but am not in severe pain so am also tempted to wait for this general referral. Any advice? If you go to a private physio there is no guarantee that he will be 'better' than a NHS one - there all individual and you simply might just not like him/her. I had pains in the outside of my knee last year and it was a common running injury called Illiotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS). The Illiotibial Band Joins the Illium (Hip Bone) to the Tibia (Shin Bone) and it crosses the knee and hip joints. It is responsible for Flexion of the knee and hip. Sometimes it get inflamed from running and this is the pain people feel. Easily treatable and definately not too bad provided you rest and strengthen it properly afterwards (a physio wiand advise for your case) AND GET THE RIGHT SHOES!!!!!! That said, still get it checked out as you individual case may not be ITBS. I can highly recommend my physio if you want, PM me and I'll send you his details.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Oh also, I know you don't want to hear it but take a few weeks off running and cross train, either cycling, swimming, rowing machine, actual rowing to allow you knee to rest but keep your cardiovascular fitness up. If swimming avoid anything with frog leg like kicking like breaststroke, stick to flutter kicking like front crawl
Population-1 Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Thanks for that - am based in Manchester so your physio would not be able to help but I appreciate the offer. I am going to attempt a gentle run tonight and stop as soon as I feel a twinge. As you say, it's mainly swimming and cross-training for me over the next few weeks. Appreciate the advice.

Glad to hear you it's not too bad Andy, when you next at Parkrun? I got 19:10 last time I did it, although I'm down as 'unknown' on the results, grrr! Gonna aim for 18 something tomorrow if I can make it.

Well done (said through a forced smile and gritted teeth! ) Will probably be next here after London Mara now because Saturday is the only day I take off work so that's when me and my partner to our long runs (changed my train plan a few weeks back!) And physio said not to run before silverstone if I want to actually do it. Promise I'll let you know next time I'm there though, even though I highly suspect you will beat be comfortably now. How do you find the fivefingers? I've never tried them before, not sure I'd like them if I'm honest but just interested I your reviews. Also, has anybody ran silverstone before? And would share your thoughts on the event if you would be so kind?!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 Well I DID IT!!! :D Ran the Silverstone 1/2 Mara today in (what felt like) scorching heat, there really is no escape from the sun, though not complaining as I suppose wind and rain is a lot worse! I had set a target of 1:45 to beat and came in at (unofficial time) 1:38:10 so VERY VERY happy with myself, but more importantly I beat my running partner who got about 1:42:50. Was a brilliant day, we went down in his Porsche 911 Turbo, roof down, tunes blaring out, shades on. Got there nice and early and got chatting to loads of people a lot their runs etc and what to expect from the course. Was great to run where so many iconic races have taken place and to literally go through the pit lanes (old and new!) where the drivers go etc. Even stopped off for a bite to eat at some posh country pub on the way home, we were a bit underdressed to say the least but really, who gives a fvck?! My legs, core and shoulders are all on fire now but my god what a good day! Did anybody race there today? How did you get on?
danny. Posted 15 March 2012 Posted 15 March 2012 Well done mate, not a bad time either! How is the knee now? The fivefingers are great, love them! In fact bought another pair (different style, thinner sole and more lightweight) for shorter runs, so much nicer than running with shoes!
Bluefoxtim Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Anyone running the Loughborough Half this weekend or the Leicester 10k the following?
FoxesAreBlue Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Me and my old boss are doing Leicester 10k. Last year this was the first race we did and kicked off this running malarkey!
Raj Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Just applied for the Leicester half(its reduced fees if you apply by end of March!) Gota beat bloody 1hour 50min(Damn you New Walk!!!)
Greg2607 Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 I've been slowly getting into running over the last 12 months. managed to shed 3 stone in the process and i'm now upto 10 miles on my long runs and putting in about 25 miles per week. Did my first 10k at the legends of sherwood (notorious night runs) and have a 10k booked in for june as well as the hinckley half marathon. I'm tipping the scales at 15 stone these days, so i'm not the quickest of runners! but it's nice to get out there all the same.
danny. Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Me and my old boss are doing Leicester 10k. Last year this was the first race we did and kicked off this running malarkey! Do you know if this is still open? Quite fancy a 10k, not done one for a few weeks. Was only a few secs off sub40 last time so would be good to try and break that! Just applied for the Leicester half(its reduced fees if you apply by end of March!) Gota beat bloody 1hour 50min(Damn you New Walk!!!) Worst end to a race ever! I'm doing the full this year, NW is gonna be even more horrible after 25 miles instead of 12.
MC Prussian Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Just done 4k again. In 30 minutes. Haven't been out running for half a year, so I'm pretty happy with that.

Rincewind Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 Don't know where to put this but I haven't contributed to this thread yet so... Watching a programmer where John Bishop cycles rows and runsthree marathons back to London from Paris 295 miles in 5 days. Just saw him rowing the Channel. He was knackered. Gave him some supplements and if they hadn't worked he would have to have been taken off the boat. 7 hours sleep in 48 hrs and he has 3 marathons to do. 82 miles to go. It's for Sports Relief so a good cause. If you don't like him as a comedian you have to admire him for this.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 danny. I think it's still open... Www.thresholdevents.co.uk or just come and register on the day, its I and around Abbey Park (2 Laps). Another oppertunity for you to beat me again!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 22 March 2012 Posted 22 March 2012 In other news, I got my London Marathon number today! The number to look out for is 44436. If you haven't already sponsored me, please consider it. I'm running for the NSPCC and would really appreciate the support. You can either do it online at www.justgiving.co.uk/andycallus Or text "EMIJ91 £2" to 70070. Don't forget to leave your name so I can add it onto my race shirt on the day itself! Many many thanks. Andy

Bluefoxtim Posted 25 March 2012 Posted 25 March 2012 1 hour 28 for Loughborough My garmin measured the course at 12.74 miles though so probably closer to 1.31 in reality!
Ozwin Posted 25 March 2012 Posted 25 March 2012 How easy was it to register for the London Marathon out of interest? I'd love to do it one year but I've heard several stories about how they only let in high end donators and stuff. I'm also sure I've asked this before (hey that rhymed) but I can't be arsed to look back.
Guest Posted 25 March 2012 Posted 25 March 2012 1hr 51mins. I wasn't looking for a new PB, as it was just another training run, and despite those sodding hills ( ), I took 5 minutes off of my previous best time!
