'65 vespa or lammy would be my perfect scoot, my birth year is '65, 8 days after yours.

Had it for about 7 years now, don't go far on it really. Me & my mates used to all over the UK on Vespas 30/40 years ago.

5 of us even went to Vienna on them in '87. Went through France, Germany & eventually reached Austria. 2 week trip. Great times.

Sounds great, I bet you got through a few spark plugs on that journey.

No van required ! Just had one minor electrical problem in Germany, probably due to a biblical downpour.

From memory, no. We were all on fairly new P range Vespas. You could ride 'em for hours on end & they'd keep going.

Good advice this - so long as you don't opt for a hyper-sports machine as a first bike! Problem is, there are riders out there that think they are in control but aren't. But as much as power can get you into trouble, it can also get you out of it. Torque is your friend.

Torque definitely makes for an easier ride.

I still look back on my 2 stroke days with rose tints, so bought an RGV250. Great fun in the power band but you need to be a pretty skilled rider to keep it singing. What really killed it was my wrists! Oooft, too old for sports bikes now.

So I got a street triple. That was great, nimble, fast and comfortable with straight bars. Problem was when I ventured out for the day with my mate and did 400 miles on it, started to notice the lack of torque and it was buzzing away all day.

Bike now is super duke GT. It's very quick but the low down thumping torque makes it very easy to ride, very addictive too. New bikes have anti-wheely, TC, slip control etc to keep you on it safely.

If you do go for a big bike, a twin cylinder is worth trying out.

A common starter bike is a Yamaha MT07 or Suzuki SV650, both are great bikes.
