Simi Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/e...008/7421046.stmI remember watching this programme at the end of the tournament - good to recap on what was one of the GREAT summers (if you have a spare hour that is)!! Unreal watching those small children dive around on those cobbles, comparing that to what we see week in and week out in the Premier League now.
Simi Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I keep telling myself I don't care about watching England anymore. But after watching that it makes it bloody hard. That tournement had everything, it really did. How close were Anderton and Gazza?! This summer is going to hurt when it kicks in.
sdb Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 magical times england v spain at wembley, my 1st ever footy match when i was 9. atmosphere was UNBELIEVABLE. i cried my eyes out at the end the emotion just took over me. everyone singing 3 lions, and we actually won a penalty shoot out!
Maybes Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Euro 96 I would have been the mere age of 8 years. I seem to remember being at a school disco when the semi final was played.....they had the game on at the bar (soft drinks only obvs ) and I was glued. One of favourite tournaments from an english perspective....
the_bowman Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 The first tournament I remember is France '98, I'd only have been 4 at the Euro 96
Tommeh Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Everyone remembers where they were when Gazza scored "that" goal. I was 7 and at a primary school end of year fate in a huge tent with all the dads and kids, must have been 200 odd in there. Probably the goal that really got me into football. memories of English football
Milky Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I can't believe that i missed all but the penalties of that semi. I was at the cub scouts. What the hell was all that about!
Ric Flair Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Superb tournament, just like Italia '90 was. Makes you realise just how good Gazza was back then.
Mark Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 I can't believe that i missed all but the penalties of that semi. I was at the cub scouts. What the hell was all that about! I remember missing the 4-1 win over Holland with the cub scouts, I don't remember the Germany game either so probably missed that for the same reason.
Tommeh Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Just watched it all the way through absolutely brilliant. Can only imagine what it would be like to sing 3 lions in the old wembley. Looked amazing especially in comparison to Tom Hark or whatever in the new one Just wish I was a little older to fully take the whole tournament in. As after that scotland match I was hooked on the tournament and football all together. thanks for posting that, its made me realise why i really do care about England on the whole and am prety gutted were not in Euro 2008. Can't halp thinking football will never be like that again though.
Uncle Albert Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Everytime I see Gazza's goal it makes me smile. Watching that game in my Nan's garden with all my Scotish family just me and my old man cheering England. Magic! Dispite only being 5 years old I can still remember where I was for all the England games in 96.
purpleronnie Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Euro 1996 was the beggining of the end. And the start of 'The rise of the Plastics'.
Floating Fox Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Loved the fact the you could "Drive down the wembley and get tickets". Would still be nice to have a tourno here again. Even if you'd get all the ****** come out...
Ultra Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Football didn't "come home", whatever Baddiel and Skinner may have told us. The fact we suffered yet ANOTHER humiliation by the Germans in a major tournament is nothing whatsoever to be proud of.

Ultra Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 But can England claim to be the real "home" of football anyway? Most non-biased (non-jingoist) followers would probably opt for Brazil or Italy. In any event, Euro 96 was hardly a vintage tournament. There were few outstanding games, and many matches took place in half-empty stadiums - due to a combination of poor organisation and high prices which will not favour any future bid for a World Cup.
syston_fox Posted 28 May 2008 Author Posted 28 May 2008 Everyone remembers THAT Gazza goal but a couple of things I will never forget from the tournament: - that drag back by Ince as he ran into the area to win the penalty against Holland - Sheringham's disguised pass to Shearer for the third goal - Gazza pausing slightly in his run when he was cm's away from the cross against Germany. - Suker's one man performance against Denmark - Poborkski's ridiculously good lob. How the hell did he get the ball that high and to drop into the net?

Yeah I thought that Brazil and Italy both invented football too.
Ultra Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Yeah I thought that Brazil and Italy both invented football too. Even if you accept that football was "born" here (which is open to doubt anyway), would most people see England as its home now? I doubt it.
act smiley Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 The term "Coming home" can be used to mean "returning to place of origin" as well as "returning to place of residence".
Nationwider Posted 28 May 2008 Posted 28 May 2008 Regardless of the semantics of Baddiel and Skinner, I remember summer of '96 really well. It came off the back of a really bad previous 12 months for me. The sun shone, beer was consumed, a great tournament was enjoyed. Good times.
