Camping

So I'm going to Exit Festival in July which is held at an old Serbian fortress.

There's about 25 of us going and against my own personal opinion the consensus was to camp there as opposed to get a nice comfortable apartment/hostel with showers and lots of other nice comfortable things.

Now, I'm not a pussy when it comes to camping. I'm quite prepared to get dirty and live rough for a few days.

But I need advice.

It is going to be minimum 35 degrees. The music starts at 6pm and finishes at 8am so any sleep I do have will be during the day. This means that I will effectively be sleeping in an oven.

So, does anyone have any handy tips for keeping cool in a tent? Special types of tent, specific cooling "devices", any kind of suggestion would be helpful.

Also any general camping tips that the more hardened outdoors types may like to share are most welcome.

Thank you.

If it's going to be that hot, don't bother with the tent!

Don't stay up any later than you have to. Bear in mind that if you go to bed at 3 in the morning the sun will be up in an hour and the tent will be nice and hot by about 6am. EDIT: I've just seen when the music's on. I wouldn't bother going to bed. You cannot stay in a tent when it's that hot.

If there's any chance of rain, take bin bags with you so you can easily keep stuff dry and keep muddy/wet stuff away from everything else. Check that all the parts of your tent are present and correct BEFORE you go away, and have some idea of how it fits together.

DO NOT forget to take some ear plugs. Regardless of the time of day or night, there's always some noisy sod who'll stop you getting any kip

Don't shit, piss or be sick in the tent.

Construct a bivouac shelter - 4 poles and a ground sheet protects you from the sun and rain but all the sides are open to the elements, in your case, hopefully any breezes that are around.

Cheers for the advice. Especially Daggers (ever reliable).

I'm thinking finding shade is absolutely critical. It's a 4 day festival so barring a massive amphetamine overdose not sleeping really isn't an option.

Ear plugs were already at the top of my imaginary list of things to buy but thanks for the suggestion anyway.

When I was in a similar situation in Thailand (also ridiculously hot at the time) we resorted to soaking cotton sheets in cold water and sleeping under them. It was far from ideal - after a while they'd start to steam! - but it did bring some relief for shortish periods before you had to go off to redrench/cool them again. Could be worth a try if you're desperate. :sweating:

If there are no en-suite facilities, I don't want to know, I'm afraid.

I always hope when i'm camping, that I'll see a woman's bra strap unexpectedly ping open revealing her pert breasts. Just like Barbara Windsor in the film Carry on Camping.

Whenever I see that film from now on, I shall always think of you.

Yay! :crylaugh::scarf:

It could be worse. Whenever I see an episode of 2.4 children, I think of Stez. :giggle:

I am not blonde. It's mousy brown.
