purpleronnie Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 We have no pace. Lampard + Gerard does not work Rooney + Defoe does not work. This team is the same that has already failed.
TrickyTrev Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I love that everybodies approach to the "square pegs in round holes problem" is to start from the outset by drawing up a template of a rigid 442 and then trying their best to think which England players best fit their idealised view of each position. Its so amusing to see that people know their way of thinking is flawed, but still not having the imagination to go down a different path. The "square pegs in round holes problem" is only such if you have this approach, something Capello is smart enough to see and Ian Holloway obvious not. Last night England played a 4-3-2-1. It didn't work because our midfield 3 had no legs, Lampard doesn't want to run and Beckham and Barry are simply incapable of it. But the formation was designed to get the ball to Rooney and Gerrard in attacking areas with the confidence that they have a solid base behind them. As an attacking option I thought it worked alright during the first half but the security wasn't there becasue Barry and Beckham, the deepest of our midfield players, were being run ragged. When Hargreaves and Carrick are back I am quite confident that this should be improved upon. I'd also like to see Rooney up top with Cole in one of the 2 attacking midfield roles. Capello, knowing a thing or two about football, will have noted the weaknesses of the performance and the system last night. He won't resort to stupid phrases like square pegs in round holes. I'm also quite sure he is utterly bemused by the lack of tactical understanding shown by the England fans and media. For a game that we love, we really don't think about it very much. Why we produce managers like Ian Holloway and Steve McLaren.

TrickyTrev Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Does anyone else think that our lack of strikers isn't a problem and we should look to utilise our abundance of talented central midfielders to avert this. Playing two attacking midfielders behind rooney would work I think. Exactly. We also have two potentially great attacking full backs in Cole and Richards that can run all day to provide the width. England playing 4-4-2 even though we have no quality wingers and don't have two centre forwards is stupid. For the record... .................James Richards..Terry..Rio..Cole ....Hargreaves..Carrick .............Lampard .........Gerrard....Cole. .............Rooney Important reserves- Walcott, Bentley, Owen, Beckham, L King, Woodgate, G Johnson, Ashton.
RowlattsFox Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Why can Lampard play alongside the likes of Ballack, Deco and Cole in the same team for Chelsea but he can't play with Gerrard, I think theres more too it than just "they can't play together". ..................James Richards..Terry..Ferdinand..Cole ..Barry/Carrick...Hargreaves Gerrard.......Lampard..........Cole .................Rooney.........

They can't be a pair in a two man midfield that is for sure, but there is no reason they can't be in the same side together. The problem is that for Liverpool Gerrard is given a free run by the fact that Alonso and Macherano do all the defencive work and simiarly for Chelsea Lampard has zero running to do as Essien covers the whole pitch and Makels/Mikel have traditionally just sat. Why Lampard can't be given the attacking responsibilites of a 3 man midfield with Gerrard further forward I don't know. That is what we tried last night and it worked okay in the first half, Barry and Beckham provided a poor defencive base though.

Father Ted Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Heskey played very well last night, winning the ball in the air alot, and giving some good opertunities which were not taken by other players notably Downing. Now there is one of the most overrated players of all time to play for England. If Mclaren had never been England manager he wouldn't even be in the England setup!

Tommy G Posted 22 August 2008 Posted 22 August 2008 Capello is starting to act like Sven. gerrard started off left wing on wed night? Unbelievable. If everyone was fit James Cole Ferdinand Woodgate Richards Bentley Gerrard Hargreaves Cole Rooney Crouch Bentley isn't a natural left winger but offers much more than Downing IMO. I'm not a fan of Barry and he played a part in the Czech first goal aswell. I hate JT with a passion, he didn't have a good game the other night either. Woodgate has more pace, it's just injuries that plague him.

I honestly think Bentley is as poor as Downing in an England shirt, if anything why not try playing Rooney left wing? Was effective there for Yanited, and then move Joe Cole to play behind the forward. Cannot argue with the centre mid partnership, anyone but Barry.

Bryn Posted 22 August 2008 Posted 22 August 2008 Harry Redknapp has said that he would play Rooney on the right wing... Rooney spends most of the game out on the wing anyway, through his own choice.
Uncle Albert Posted 22 August 2008 Posted 22 August 2008 Rooney spends most of the game out on the wing anyway, through his own choice. Probably because its the only way he is going to get a peice of the game. Either we have Crouch or Heskey upfront with Roon and then its all long balls for Rooney trying to get on to Crouch's flick on's, which just doesnt work. Then we have Defoe starting upfront and then for some reason all the play seems to try and go through him which usually leads to an offside or him blowing another oppourtunity. I really like the thought of Rooney on the left, he has got exceptional pace for his build and will 9/10 times beat his man. He can also whip a good ball in, see Yanited's goal last week for proof. Rooney can also cut in to a smash at goal. If it is good enough for Yanited surely it is good enough for England. Ideal front three. Joe Cole Michael Owen Wayne Rooney

Was effective there for Yanited, and then move Joe Cole to play behind the forward.Cannot argue with the centre mid partnership, anyone but Barry. Trouble is Roon and J Cole would drop into the midfield too much, Rooney was doing that on wed a lot. Which left Defoe on his own and it was pointless, the CB's for the Czechs had him in their back pockets. It would leave a midfield 3 which would be Gerrard, Barry and Lamps if Capello's selections to date are anything to go by. I would only pick Gerrard out of those and put Hargreaves instead of Barry. I just can't see Eng adapting to 4-3-3 of 4-5-1 which ever way you look at it. J Cole probably would because Chelsea often play that system. Rooney has to be our focal point as he is the player that can cause the most damage, I don't think the left wing is the best place for him if im honest.
