mmarkie Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 What does everyone think it'll be; GK:Martin RB:Gilbert CB:Morrison CB:Tunchev LB:Powell RM:Adams CM:Oakley© CM:King LM:Dyer ST:Howard ST:Fryatt SUBS: Henderson O'Neill Kishishev Gradel Dickov Porter Campbell I'd stick with Martin in goal as he looked more comfortable and was less shakey than Henderson. Gilbert's the obvious choice at right-back. Morrison at the back with Tunchev as they have looked good at the back. A debut for Powell aswell as i feel we need a proper left-back against a premiership side. I'd go for Adams instead of Gradel as he looked better than Gradel and he was only on for 20 mins plus his final balls better. Oakley and King in the middle again as they are a really good pairing. Dyer on the left as he can get forward loads and gets good balls into the box and he would help Powell out alot with his tracking back and energy. And finally Howard and Fryatt up front as they have formed a good partnership and both can score goals. Thoughts?
clazkel Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I think Pearson will change afew players for Fulham with it being a cup game HendoGilbert Worley/Tunchev (if fit) Hobbs PowellAdams Weso Kish DyerDickov DJ I'm not saying the above would be the team i would pick, but i think Pearson will change afew players to keep them for the league. If he is, he has got to start, has to be one of the best players we've had at the club in recent times.Definately too good for League 1 and would probably walk into a lot of championship clubs.

But i would actually have Dickov up front instead of Fryatt.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I wouldn't change it much. Maybe Weso in for King but that's about it. They will make changes to their team and we can push them hard to get a real confidence boost.
Mark Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Martin Gilbert Hobbs Tunchev(if fit) Dyer Adams Wesolowski Kishishev Porter Campbell Dickov Subs: Henderson, O'Neill, Gradel, Powell, King, Fryatt, John Cheltenhams most important, only 2 days recoverery for those playing Wednesday & Saturday.

Thracian Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Henderson, Gilbert, Hobbs, Tunchev (if fit), Dyer; Adams, King, Porter, Gradel; Campbell, Dickov. subs: Morrison, Wesolowski, Kishishev, Howard, Fryatt. I'd take the double chance to improe Porter's fitness and to use him in central midfield where he can be most creative. I'd use Gradel in a freer role on the left which would enable Adams to play in his most natural position. Campbell and Dickov would get the chance to form a partnership giving a well earned rest to the likes of Oakley, Howard and Fryatt.
Legend_in_blue Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 The only changes I would make from today's lineup are as follows: Powell in for Porter and shift Dyer to LM. Bring in Adams for Gradel and rest him. Take out Fryatt and play Dickov. Bring in Weso and take out King. That'll do. I don't see how you can justify playing Porter in a CM role. He's far too lightweight.
Mark Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I don't see how you can justify playing Porter in a CM role. He's far too lightweight. That's done it, you'll soon find out.
Legend_in_blue Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 That's done it, you'll soon find out. I have visions of Tiatto in CM. Please no!!! I can't bear thinking about it.
Thracian Posted 24 August 2008 Posted 24 August 2008 I don't see how you can justify playing Porter in a CM role. He's far too lightweight. Seems to me like the perfect opportunity to prove differently. There have been stacks of top quality lightweight midfielders over the years. By far our best midfielder was wee Davie Gibson - a lightly built guy who played on mudbath pitches and hardly ever got his kit dirty. Porter looks twice as far across the shoulders as Gibson was. Billy Bremner was about 5ft 5ins and his Leeds team used to keep possession for minutes at a time they were so good. George Eastham, Charlie Cooke, Johnny Giles...the list is endless.
Webbo Posted 24 August 2008 Posted 24 August 2008 I have to agree with Thrac to some extent. I've can't recall seeing Porter in CM so I don't know how good he is but his build doesn't come into it. He appears to me to be a stocky little git and I should think he can handle the physical side of the role.
Father Ted Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 Hendo Gilbert Morrison Hobbs Tunchev Gradel King Oakley DyerFryatt Howard Subs: Martin, Powell, Adams, Porter, Weso., DJ, Dickov. I've gone with Hendo because Martin, to me on Saturday was not convincing, a couple of times the ball would be whipped in to dangerous positions where the goalie needs to be commanding which there was none of, also the communication was also not great. I wouldn't like to be NP, because I can see one of Morrison, Hobbs, Tunchev being very dissapointed...

Porter is not strong though, he often pulls out of challenges and is afraid to get stuck in which is exactly what a CM should do.
Bert Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 Martin Gilbert Tunchev Hobbs Powell Gradel Oakley Kishishev Dyer Howard Dickov. Subs: Hendo Morrison King Jimbo Porter Fryatt Dj. Remember - 7 subs tomorrow.
Thracian Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 Porter is not strong though, he often pulls out of challenges and is afraid to get stuck in which is exactly what a CM should do. Porter's is as strong as an ox and as good in a challenge as anyone if it were required. But players aren't encouraged to go pounding in on people, it earns them a booking, puts them under pressure and gets them subbed. They do an exercise in training where there's one player in the centre of a circle of six to eight players who pass the ball between them. The one player is expected to close down the player receiving the ball as quickly and closely as possible and so on as the ball continues to be passed. There may be interceptions and forced miscontrol but no real tackling. Watch what happens in games. Players employ a zonal marking system and force the opposition outwards to limit their passing options. They time their final closing down to coincide with a slight touch of the ball and possible miscontrol allowing them to close the space almost completely and perhaps pinch the ball or force a hurried to misdirected pass. Genuine crunching tackles are rare and, if the opponent goes down, almost always end in a free kick. Porter is not required to crunch tackle but to close people down andlimit their progress and passing options. If he commits a foul he gives away a free-kick which gives the opposition a potentially dangerous advantage. It's not wanted. King and Oakley are the same as Porter. They shepherds people into neutral or limited areas not because they can't or won't tackle but because it quickly forces a mistake without giving away a free-kick.
Joe. Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 (My likely lineup) Martin Gilbert Hobbs Tunchev Powell (is he actually match fit anybody know?) Adams Oakley Weso Dyer Howard Fryatt
sbfox Posted 26 August 2008 Posted 26 August 2008 Did everyone think Adams played that well on Saturday? I thought he looked a bit sluggish and not up for the challenge... I've heard much of his ability to provide that 'killer ball' but saw no evidence of it against Tranmere. I also thought we looked unbalanced (although that may have been because Dickov was playing on the left wing too...) as he didn't really get that far forwards. As for Fulham, I'd play... Martin Gilbert/Morrison/Tunchev/Powell Gradel/Weso/King/Porter Dickov/Howard
