What's your claim to fame?

I'm really ranting about the music industry, and celebrity in general, which then leads to women being picked on more. People will always pick on those who are seen as different, and I feel for you, as I was picked on for the crime of wearing glasses. But there is so much pressure on women to be thin in the media. When I pick up a magazine and see a women with a normal body shape being branded as fat or untoned, or when I hear that my niece has been finding out how to lose weight when she has only just turned 10, then the papers report that eating disorders are on the rise, I'm sorry, it makes my blood boil.

I have already said that we are all different shapes and sizes, nobody should be made to feel bad about theirs because it doesn't conform with the latest aesthetic preferences of a bunch of tossers.

It's the Media in general. Even radio moderators have to look alike these days. Switch to American TV channels and compare the looks of (male and female) presentators. It's like Ken and Barbie have become alive. It's the American ideal and that image and style is overtaking Europe as well. Add an unhealthy relationship to solariums to that, fashion that dicates the same looks to all teenies (and most of them believe it). Bulimia, how could I forget about you? I can't tell how hard it is for women. I'm a man.

I'm short-sighted and have worn glasses for a long time. I still do, occasionally. But yeah, as soon as you don't "seem" to look conformist, you're outcast. And today's society is pushing it even further. Primary school kids are already forced to buy into it.

I can concur with the pressure on woman to a certain extent. But you also have to admit that some women are easily gullible and take everything they read in fashion magazines for granted. I love women that are themselves and smart enough to feel good about themselves. Healthy, happy women.

A rare sight, though.

This thread has taken a turn for the worst.

foxes talk is weird... the speakers thread turned into an estate agent like discussion on where to live in london and is now concentrating on kebabs :dunno:

I think its a shame that people have so much pressure on them to look perfect, e.g trying to get six pack's etc. I wish people had more confidence in themselves and weren't constantly trying to be someone different. I'm incredibly lucky that I have a close group of family and friends around me, and so long as I have them, I'm not bothered what anyone else thinks. I am who I am, and I'll never change.

Hang on a minute chaps, I'm going to stick up here for Clairey Steps. She is no bigger than most women in the UK, and she has always stated (in women's magazines) she has always been under pressure to look thin, when she is not naturally thin. I read how she was having to go to extremes to keep the record label happy, and it's wrong that women have to half starve themselves for a pop career when male mooses like Daniel Beddingfield aren't told to get to the gym. In fact, many of the worlds most talented male artists are pig ugly, but this is ignored, however if a woman has to get on in the music industry, she has to be at the biggest a size 6 and prepared to bare her plastic baps in an instant. Right pisses me off.

>_<:@

I would say (not being patronising)... I'm with you sister!!

I just think the stark contrast is quite impressive... but I'd rather 'fat' Claire who eats food... the 'skinny' non-eating Claire any day!

Completely the right attitude my friend

so, why is there this reality gap between women being under pressure to be slim and most women in the uk being the size of claire steps, who is clearly overweight?

granted there is a large number of women who are either exercise freaks or have eating disorders, but the majority are, i take it, fat, overweight or obese...

is it that these overweight women are reading the disgraceful 'ok magazine' too fat/too thin propaganda, but are so lacking in self-assurance to do anything about it... or is it simply that women are hiding begind the irresponsibilty of the media, whilst stuffing themselves with junkfood, soda and cake and, imcreasingly, beer, whilst doing less physical jobs (like laundry - :giggle: ) and leading more inactive lives---

anyone?

Thank You. I thought if I was going to go off topic I might as well do it properly.

Fair enough.

Ok, if you want to feel better, a lad in my tutor group at school was picked on for being too skinny. After leaving school, I didn't see him for over 10 years. In that time, he has being going down the gym to bulk himself up, to stop him feeling small and inadequate. Whilst he has biceps and triceps some would kill for, it's not his natural body shape, and he cannot bulk up his legs, which are really skinny and now totally out of proportion. He is now more paranoid about his legs than he ever was about being too skinny!

You are still young, and your peers may be more immature than you think. Believe me, you do not want to be taking what these guys say seriously. You have a few years of growing to do yet, and may just be a late developer. I was picked on for my looks, and now I look at these bullies on facebook and they all look old, fat and ugly. Being small has its advantages.

It's all about that person really. Many ignore what is being said about their appearance but at the same time others are not so confident and take comments to heart.

My personal advice NSLL is ignore them, if you feel happy with what you are then don't let some ignorant little runts get you down. I had the same thing and I ignored it, after a while they gave up.

I've got a mate like that, his upper body is awsome but his leg size lets him down. Looks like a sparrow because hes neglected them for a few years. I doubt no-one is ever happy with their body. One thing is people that moan all fu cking day about how their fat... whilst sitting there munching crips and eating pancakes.

Quit moaning and do something about it? Until you have worked hard and eaten well then it's unlikely to happen, people think they can just change things with a click of the fingers and minimal effort.

Nah depends on where we went, I wasnt a fan of Harrods. Brought one thing a jumper and harldy wear it. XL boys aswell (so you maybe in  ), I was 11 at the time so fashion has changed in them 6 years.

Selfridges is the place to shop in Landon mate, none of that Abercrombie shite. Abercrombie and Jack Wills are easily the worst style of clothing I have ever seen.
