I love Holby/Casualty 's obvious acting:-

(Man Driving a lorry on his mobile in the rain) "Yeh, don't worry love, I'll be home in tea in no time whatsoever, without any injuries need for medical treatment"

I think i'm gonna change my name to Dr Singh, as with Holby, all the nurses will be dropping the kegs ready for some Singh in them!!!

The Government paid for it before they scrapped the Student Grant. They expect people to want to learn to be Scientists, Doctors, lawyers etc but then expect you to pay for it.

You are talking about Dr's Lawyers and Scientists... whose take home pay will be over 100K by the time they are 30. they can all afford to pay the loan back by the time they are 35 and still drive a Porsche.

I think it's right you should pay, nothing comes for free these days! There are enough spongers already in this country, without students doing it aswell.

Spongers? Really? I've worked and paid tax thank you and now I want to better myself, sorry about that. Invest in the future and it will repay you. Backward attitude there chum.

Just my opinion Katy. I think you should pay for it? I don't see whats wrong with that.

It is your opinion but I just think it's a short sighted view, you used to get paid to better yourself and the Country was then rewarded with people who could do these important jobs. Now you have people put off getting qualified because of the massive debt it entails. After paying extortionate accommodation fees some students I know have £25 a week to live on - disgraceful really.

Kokopops was so nice to post the annual University rankings for me in the University Thread. However, I wonder what makes you choose a specific institute - what are your criteria? What's the decisive reason? Reputation? Hearsay? Location? Fees? Nightlife?

Primarily the course as it was the only course of its type in the country. To be honest I don't think anyone would choose Reading for its reputation or its nightlife.

Another deciding factor was the campus which was superb.

How much campus hopping did you do prior to settling in Reading?

I went to open days at Lancaster University (also quite a nice campus if I remember rightly), Manchester (city-based so none of the open green space, woodlands and lakes at Reading) and then Reading. To be honest as long as I achieved the A-Level results required I was always going to go to Reading as, like I said, it offered a very good, unique course that was pretty much exactly what I was looking to do.

I honestly do think that Reading's campus is probably one of the nicest in the country. In summer particularly it was fantastic.

You shouldn't have to pay for Education anyway...........

How's that work then? Are you proposing teachers and all the employees connected with schools/universities work for free? And if the Government pays, do they do so as a charitable exercise or do they charge it to taxes? In which case it is only free to a proportion of the population.

Right, tommorow i'm meant to be applying to uni. I have no idea whether or not I should apply to some course (none jump out at me.... I don't think im good enough at any one thing to do it in degree form) - generally media based - or to get a proper job, something like fireman/policeman (don't laugh). Just a proper career?

It's doing me head in and I can't actually decide by tommorow... what does everybody think? i know there's some students on here, is it worth it? I'm not particularly bothered about the student lifestyle, I can get drunk as it is. ahhh which one?!

Follow the philosophy of the Asia song: "Do What I want to Anyway". In other words decide what you want to do in life and do it. Working life is a sentence if you don't enjoy it so pick a direction that appeals to you, that will challenge you and that will give you a sense of purpose. Life's too short for voluntary bad days.

All true, but doesn't mean you can't have a decent set of mates without going to uni. I only get annoyed about people that go 'for the sake of it, because I can't think of anything to do after my A levels.'

They end up with 20K debt and then never earn above the £15K threshold to pay any of it back. each to their own I guess.

That's true. I've been thinking about it today though and the one thing I'll miss about Uni is how everyone I know and like is so close together. Obviously if you don't go to Uni all your mates are pretty close anyway. This point is not worded very well, and is probably redundant. I don't know, it's far too late to think properly.

To be honest I think Reading's a pretty nice place. Apart from the major cities you're not going to get an exceptionaly better night life and it's so easy to get ANYWHERE from the station. Out of all the places I've lived it's definitely in the top 2 (only because Lincoln is ridiculously beautiful and I have a soft spot for the place I was [sort of] born). Admittedly that's not many, BUT FuCK YOU! :rolleyes:

I didn't mean the reputation of the town, more the university. It's a decent university but not in the top 10 or anything like that. I guess that's overall though and it might be good at specific subjcts. Like the one I did. Mwahaha. Err, but yeah the town is ok. I just found that the locals all looked really miserable. Probably because of all the bloody students.
