Unit Posted 10 September 2008 Posted 10 September 2008 Right, tommorow i'm meant to be applying to uni. I have no idea whether or not I should apply to some course (none jump out at me.... I don't think im good enough at any one thing to do it in degree form) - generally media based - or to get a proper job, something like fireman/policeman (don't laugh). Just a proper career? It's doing me head in and I can't actually decide by tommorow... what does everybody think? i know there's some students on here, is it worth it? I'm not particularly bothered about the student lifestyle, I can get drunk as it is. ahhh which one?!

Unit Posted 10 September 2008 Author Posted 10 September 2008 Be a Plod mate, my respect for you will go through the roof Ha i knew that'd get some negative reactions. I jsut mean that kind of thing, a steady career with decent pay etc

Unabomber Posted 10 September 2008 Posted 10 September 2008 Go to Uni it is a fantastic experience and you might regret it if you don't go.
act smiley Posted 10 September 2008 Posted 10 September 2008 That is rather bizarre - are you sure they actually want course selections and the thing completely sent rather than just a "yes/no" as to whether to put you onto the system and write up the references? I mean, when I did the applications in 2004 the deadline was about December or January. My advice would be to apply, then if you decide you want to you can, if not you can change your mind from yes to no much easier than the other way around.
ozleicester Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 I suggest you go and buy the "Game of Life"...set it up and spin the wheel...play 2 games, one where you go to work..one where you go to Uni. Sit down at the end and decide which game you enjoyed more..there's your answer
Tilley Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 Appy for your Police Training mate. I might when I'm old enough.
Dr The Singh Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 Depends on what course you want to do at uni. I presume you have to pay fees etc for uni, which would cost 3k a year plus living costs. If the the degree you do is not gonna give you a high paid job some time soon then post grad you will be lumbered with heavy debt. My mate didn't go uni but went to freshers week and all the uni parties etc, he worked for Royal Mail and now is middle management, while I went uni got myself in debt struggled at first to get e 'decent' job even with a 2.1 hons. My mate is in a better position then I am and we both had the same fun at uni. If I had the chioce now, I would go uni for a year, get the whole uni out of my system or get some decent a-levels and do medicine!!!
Tommy G Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 I didn't go to Uni, the massive debt put me off. Luckily I have gone ionto a career that is well paid and doesn't require a degree. Depends on what you are interested in

I wouldn't change my decision to go to Uni for anything, but for some people taking the job route is better suited. Personally though I'd say Uni. I've had the four best years of my life. I've met so many people and made so many wesome friends and at the end of it got a pretty sweet job.

I only get annoyed about people that go 'for the sake of it, because I can't think of anything to do after my A levels.' They end up with 20K debt and then never earn above the £15K threshold to pay any of it back. each to their own I guess.
The People's Hero Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 Uni was the best time of my life. Horses for courses though mate. One of my mates is a copper and he used to be well sound, now he's a drink driving, pint swilling, woman-hating I-AM sorta guy. I'm sure they're not all like that, just the ones I know.

You shouldn't have to pay for Education anyway...........

When i appleid last year we had to say wether we wanted to be added to the ucas system at this point but didnt have to choose courses etc. It is better to go through the application process and then pull out, then it is to not bother doing it. Atleast that way you can go to uni if you want to, if you decide not to then it doesnt really matter you just dont accept your offers. Im off to uni in a couple of weeks time, Took over my room yesterday its right near the centre of plymouth and their is a mini casino across the road! PERFECT!!!!!!! oh and Betfred is not far away either!!! Im really looking forward to it aswell. Im doing a course on computing which should be good. im very much looking forward to it all
James. Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 You shouldn't have to pay for Education anyway........... Who's going to pay for it?

Dont do a degree for the sake of it, do a degree if it will lead to a career. Uni lasts 3 or 4 years your working life lasts a hell of a lot longer. As Mr singh points out you can party with students (cant be that hard to get hold of a fake NUS) and work at the same time. If the degree is not a load of crap like a degree in how to mow a lawn then go for goal! I went to uni and they were the best days of my life. I did a degree in computing and am working in the field i graduated in. If i didnt go to uni i wouldnt know no different about the time of my life. If i did a couple of industry standard qualifications then i would prob be where i am now a little earlier.
Katy Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 Who's going to pay for it? The Government paid for it before they scrapped the Student Grant. They expect people to want to learn to be Scientists, Doctors, lawyers etc but then expect you to pay for it.
The People's Hero Posted 11 September 2008 Posted 11 September 2008 I wish I'd tried harder at school and gone in to medicine. I really do. I could've done it as well, science is easy.

I've started watching holby city, I think I have a head start on all the medical students, it's should be a piece of cake, I say we do it!!!!

I love Holby/Casualty 's obvious acting:- (Man Driving a lorry on his mobile in the rain) "Yeh, don't worry love, I'll be home in tea in no time whatsoever, without any injuries need for medical treatment"
