davieG Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 Uefa Cup given new name in revamp The new name will underline the tournament's "special character" The Uefa Cup is to be renamed the Uefa Europa League from next season, with the competition set to be extended. The new-look league will have 48 clubs in 12 groups of four, with teams playing each other home and away as opposed to just once as it stands now. The top two in each group then join the eight third-placed Champions League clubs in a 32-club knock-out stage. However, under the new format beaten cup finalists will no longer qualify for the competition. Millwall and West Ham have both qualified as beaten FA Cup runners-up in recent years, but Uefa says this will no longer be the case, even if the winners have already qualified for the Champions League. The competition will also have its TV rights sold centrally, in the same way as the Champions League, which should increase income to clubs. "I am convinced the new format will give the Uefa Europa League a successful new impetus," said Uefa president Michel Platini. "These changes will improve this historic competition, which is very important for Uefa and for European football as it gives more fans, players and clubs the thrill of European club football." A statement on the Uefa website adds: "The new name and logo will help underline the tournament's special character and unique sporting appeal. "Uefa's ambition in making these changes is to rejuvenate the competition in the light of the new European football landscape, which has shifted significantly with the continued success of the Champions League, so that the Uefa Europa League can establish itself as a major competition. The new name will underline the tournament's "special character" - does ot have any character
Floating Fox Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 Not sure If I like it, the name certianly isn't that great, and I'm not sure about the format either...
shen Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 Don't give a toss what they call it. But it's ridiculous how often they change the format...
Fosse Boy Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 NO! NO! NO!!! What a pile of worthless bollocks! Why can't these fools see that the only way they'll get me to watch European football again is if a) They get rid of group stages in all their competitions, b) They bring back the Cup Winners' Cup and c) They allow ONLY the champions of each member nation to compete in their oxymoronic 'Champions League'??? :@
Finnegan Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 I don't mind the Champions League as it is, there wasn't a need for three European competitions imo. But I do think the only way people will ever get that excited about the UEFA Cup is if the winner got a guaranteed champions league spot with a decent seeding.

Yeah defo , only way to get participating teams interested in it
potter3 Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 The Champions League should be a knockout competition, the competing teams would the be the national champions from the top 15 European nations, and the previous UEFA Cup winner
maddog Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 Much better format. Isn't the current one top 3 from each group go through from a group of 5 or something shit like that. Good decision UEFA. Its basically like the champions league now with an extra round in the knock out phase. I still think it's a pointless competition though but they won't be scraping it any time soon.
AmericanScott Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 It sounds a lot nicer than UEFA Cup. Europa League sounds awsome! Don't care much about the format, i just like seeing our teams do well in it.
shen Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 It sounds a lot nicer than UEFA Cup. Europa League sounds awsome!Don't care much about the format, i just like seeing our teams do well in it. They should have called it "Il League del Europa, Ach ja, j'aime de sound of das"... THAT would have been awesome!!
Floating Fox Posted 26 September 2008 Posted 26 September 2008 It sounds a lot nicer than UEFA Cup. Europa League sounds awsome!Don't care much about the format, i just like seeing our teams do well in it. Far too American for me.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 27 September 2008 Posted 27 September 2008 On one hand Platini goes on about tradition - and brings back presenting the cup in the stands so only a few can see whats going on. Then they go and change a competition to be an almost carbon copy of the champions league - but for shitter teams, and the teams that get knocked out of the Champions League but are deemed 'lucky losers!' Too many games! Less is more.
Libertine Posted 27 September 2008 Posted 27 September 2008 Jesus. I don't get why they're called leagues anyway. 4 teams in the group stage hardly constitutes a league.
AmericanScott Posted 27 September 2008 Posted 27 September 2008 Far too American for me. I guess it must be my upbringing on sports. The Champions League should be called Major League Europe and UEFA CUP Minor League Europe
andyh1884 Posted 27 September 2008 Posted 27 September 2008 In a way, these new rules further devalue the FA cup, which has seen 'top' teams take it less & less seriously over the years. If runners-up don't get a place in the cup, I see even less incentive for teams like Boro/Bolton/Blackburn to put out full-strenght sides. 'Who cares?' you might say, but what's the point of us progressing a long way in the competition if eventually we'll get battered by a top-four team & for no reward? Millwall got European football out of their pummelling, that ends now under this change. Whilst this might in principle appear to be of no concern to us, it does take away from the competition if the major sides take it far less seriously due to the prospective future gains from the competition
