David O'Leary Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 BBC Sport England squad: James (Portsmouth), Green (West Ham), Carson (West Brom); Brown (Manchester United), Johnson (Portsmouth), Terry (Chelsea), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Lescott (Everton), Upson (West Ham), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea); Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Walcott (Arsenal), Barry (Aston Villa), Jenas (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Downing (Middlesbrough), Wright-Phillips (Manchester City); Heskey (Wigan), Crouch (Portsmouth), Rooney (Manchester United), Defoe (Portsmouth).
Tevez Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 How the hell Matt Upson is in there I'll never know.
Sparky Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Fooks sake , Owen on the bench is a dream situation
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Rooney and Heskey need to start. No more chopping and changing now we've found a successful formula.
Joe. Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Owen's got to be in there for me. No Joe Cole either I see? He played for Chelsea and scored today...
ousefox Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 He has been getting goals recently so wierd decision
Sparky Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Owen's got to be in there for me. No Joe Cole either I see? He played for Chelsea and scored today... Picked up a foot injury
dandannieldanok Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Downing and Beckham? Get a grip. Tis a joke, especially considering Ashley Young who is better than those pair put together has been left out. No Joe Cole either I see? He played for Chelsea and scored today... Injured, I think.
Uncle Albert Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 12 goals in 17 games for Newcastle and that isnt worthy of an England call up. Fook me. Downing in there again, its a joke at times. Barry will probably start over Gerrard aswell on Saturday. <_< At least Heskey is in the squad. Downer that Joey Cole is out.

We all know that when Barry plays we see the best of Gerrard / Lampard.

Gerrard on the left I'd assume, especially considering Joe Cole is ruled out. Normally I stick up for Downing because his performances for Middlesboro are usually quite good but this time I'm struggling. I feel sorry for him as well because you can see when he plays for England that he unconfident and scared shitless and you can see the fans are waiting to boo him. I find it amazing that managers like Ericsson and Capello really rate him, I can only think that Capello wants a natural left footer option on the wing. Beckham shouldn't be in there, he must be good for the dressing room because thats the only reason I see him being there. As for Owen, who would people leave out for him to come in?
dandannieldanok Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Don't start that again . We all know that when Barry plays we see the best of Gerrard / Lampard. He's got a valid point though, Barry surely cannot start ahead of either Gerrard or Lampard.

Would you rather have two well performing midfielders in there then or two that hideously cripple each other's talent? It's all about the team as a whole, not names on a sheet.

With how well Gerrard and Lampard are both playing for their clubs then yes. Fook sake we are playing another bunch of missfits not Germany and co. If I was gaffer I would play both of them together and say to them go out and do what you want abit like Mike Bassett and I would tell them both to attack. If Terry and Ferdinand are not capable of defending with out a holding midfielder against Kazakstan then we are shit. Boring Barry who will play the ball to Terry or Ferdinand or may push forward and pass to Lampard or Gerrard. Cosmic.
Joe. Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 I couldn't care less who starts in the centre to be honest. If I had a choice I'd go with Gerrard and Barry, but I'd almost be equally as happy to see Gerrard and Lampard play together. As Albert says, if they can't work it against Kazhakstan then something is drastically wrong.

sdb Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 Young should be there instead of Beckham. Don't see the harm of having Owen in the squad but he shouldn't be needed anyway. As long as the starting XI remains...
andyh1884 Posted 5 October 2008 Posted 5 October 2008 He's got a valid point though, Barry surely cannot start ahead of either Gerrard or Lampard. Have you not watched England over the last few years? It doesn't matter who's in charge, Lampard & Gerrard in the middle together just doesn't work. We need to play the right players for the system, not just the 'star' names regardless of how well they play together. It's ridiculous to say Gerrard & Lampard should play ahead of Barry. The overwhelming evidence suggests otherwise

They've both been sensational, world class performers for their clubs for the past 4 years at least. And the result of playing them together? Season after season of international under acheivement. The result of playing Barry in there with one of them? Some brilliant, exciting performances. I just hope Capello has the balls to stick with Barry.
