marbelladave Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 Thrac The point I was making about our crosses is that very few come from close to the dead ball line, most are diagonal balls into the box that are much easier to defend. Howard gets his head to many of them but rarely sets up chances. I don't think that he is a bad player, just the wrong player at this time. We have wide men true enough, but none of them provide great crosses, Dyer and Adams both post a goal threat when they start wide and cut inside and I think Gradel would be just as dangerous if encouraged to do the same. Howard's presence seems to demand the long ball but we are much more fluid when we play the ball on the floor which is my main reason for dropping him to the bench. I would most definitely try Fryatt as the focus of the attack with 2 preferably 3 quicker players in support. I've said this before, but I would love to see Dyer, Adams or Gradel running at Div 3 center backs. I think we have enough quality in the squad to play the game the way we want to play it, not matching up with the sort of ridged 4-4-2 that we have played in recent games!
whitlock Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 I would like to see Gradel on the bench for the next few League games atleast. I think Gradel could work quite well as an impact sub, like he did at Fulham. Come on with half an hour or so left, that gives him 30mins to give it his all and show Pearson that he should be starting. It may not change his game at all. But a fresh Gradel coming on against a tired left back, Gradel would be favourable everytime!
Raj Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 WOW!!! Howard out!!!! Actually, the fat lazy bastard oath did okay, even for my liking!!! <_< Still a fat lump of goal scoring shite!!! Maxi is a yung kid learining his trade,he's bound to have a few shitty games. Oakley on the other hand needs to get into games ALOT more as he would rule this shitty crap league. Dont hammer our yoof players...Give em a chance!

I've nothing against that idea in principle but whoever starts would need proper support from the full-back behind him. We hammer our attackers but expect so little of our defenders.

Thracian Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 Mattock was giving Dyer excellent support on Saturday. I fully accept that. We were talking about Gradel/Adams on the right.
Corky Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 I fully accept that. We were talkin about Gradel/Adams on the right. Ok, fair enough. Hobbs isn't really a right-back though, Gilbert was giving both players good assistance before he got injured.
clazkel Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 Probably because he wins pretty much every header, lays the ball off to the wide men. And lets be honest probably takes the big horrible centre halfs that most clubs have in league one away from Fryatt. He does win alot of headers, i don't disagree with that, but what comes of them, not alot imo, and laying it off to the wide men to put in crosses, and alot of the time the quality of the crosses into the box are poor (and thats if Gradel gets past his player and doesn't lose the ball on the way). We look better when Dyer runs directly at the other teams defence and not run towards the corner to put a cross in. We don't need to be knocking the ball for Howard to head on, we should play it on the floor and attack the big horrible centre halfs with movement and pace, thats what will hurt them the most.

I fail to see how that is Howard's fault
clazkel Posted 3 November 2008 Posted 3 November 2008 I fail to see how that is Howard's fault It isn't Howards fault, i'm just saying when Howard plays up front it seems the idea is to pass the ball wide for the wingers to put decent balls in the box for Howard to get his head onto, but the crosses in the box have been pretty poor this season, thats why i think it would suit us better if they played the ball thro midfield rather than always seeming to go thro the wingers with most attacks we have. I would like to see King or Oakley run with the ball to open the play up, rather than always passing wide, it is too predictable
Daggers Posted 4 November 2008 Posted 4 November 2008 I didn't know you were a Peter Reid fan Was always my second choice for the manager's job
