Referee's Jaw Broken By Player Shown Red Card

A footballer punched a referee during a match, breaking his jaw and leaving him unconscious.

Moments earlier, St Andrews FC midfielder Joe Preston, 20, had been sent off by ref Andy Parker for violent conduct.

After leaving the pitch, he turned and ran back on to confront Mr Parker and punched him.

Today, Leicestershire and Rutland FA said it was investigating the incident – the latest in a string of attacks by players on referees – and would be taking further action.

Mr Parker, 50, from Whitwick, suffered a broken jaw and a depressed cheekbone in the attack, which he said had "devastated" him.

said: "I just remember waking up in the back of an ambulance. I thought I was just unconscious for a few minutes, but everyone has told me it was more like 15 minutes.

"My family have been so upset by what has happened.

"He should see the damage he has caused to my face. I am devastated.

"I have been a referee for seven years and nothing like this has ever happened to me before."

Mr Parker said the player's actions were "completely unacceptable".

He said: "I have been left with a broken jaw because I was doing my job.

"I will have to sit down and think very hard about whether I want to be a referee again and whether it is worth it."

Aylestone-based St Andrews were leading Gedling Miners' Welfare 3-1 in their East Midlands Counties League match at their ground, in Canal Street, on Saturday when the incident happened. The game was abandoned after 85 minutes.

Today, Mr Preston, of Thorpe Astley, who has played for the club since he was a child, said he was ashamed of his actions.

He said: "The referee didn't deserve what happened to him. I had no right to do what I did.

"I am writing him a letter apologising for my action. I don't think I could tell him face to face, as I am ashamed of myself . He was just doing his job and I was completely out of order.

"I have a lot of issues at the moment in my life, which isn't an excuse for what I did, and I just flipped.

"The next thing I knew, all the players were shouting at me."

Mr Preston, who has been thrown out of the club, said he had an appointment with a doctor yesterday to "sort out anger-management classes".

Darren Bradley, joint manager of St Andrews, said: "He knocked the ref clean out with the punch. Everyone at the game couldn't believe what happened.

"We don't condone Joe's actions and he will never play for the club again after this, but he is completely gutted and he can't believe what he did. He is heartbroken and unbelievably sorry for his actions."

Chris Parkin, football operations manager of Leicestershire and Rutland County FA, said: "This has happened before, but this is the most serious incident there has been. There is a due process to be followed and we are following that."

Mr Parkin refused to say how many attacks there had been on referees.

Police said they were investigating. A spokeswoman said: "We arrested a man on Sunday and he was later released on police bail

1. He plays for St.Andrews - says it all really.

2. 'Writing a letter of apology' - what's that going to do, your not going to be allowed to play football again.

3. He was arrested yet nothing at all happened to Chris Morgan after he assaulted Iain Hume.

Oh bloody hell, do you ever not shut up with the large amounts of shit you post?

1. St Andrews is a decent set up, as the people who played TB in the game will find out that it's a nicely run club. They've done bloody well to get in the East Midlands League.

2. Writing a letter of apology is better than nothing, it's better than passing on a message to someone else who tells him sorry. At least a letter is personal and I'm sure the Ref will take time to read.

3. Yes the boy done wrong, no-one should ever whack the Referee no matter how bad he makes a decision you just don't do it. What it is, your comparing the Championship to East Midlands League which is about 8 steps below in the pyramid. Their is about 10,000 witnesses vs the 50 who probably played/watched the match. Alright, Morgans tackle was dirty but going up for a header who knows what is going to happen, your going to enter the oblivion going up for a header with a meathead of a centre half. You just won't know what's going to happen in a 50/50 tackle situation. Unfortunately, Iain Hume come out in a worser state people expected.

I went school with this lad. Brilliant at football, had trials at Grimsby, it's just a shame that sometimes he lets his temper get the better of him, as he's very talented.

Hope the referee makes a full recovery and goes on to referee again. They do a difficult job refereeing some of the idiots that they have to put up with on a sunday morning.

This lad should be charged with assualt in my eyes.

Talented at being a cock by the looks of it.

KO in one! I don't know what the world's coming to. They used to be tough around Whitwick way. Perhaps they've gone soft since the mines closed ...:D

They still are, I'd never mess with Potter.
