James. Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 I know I've not reviewed anyone else's so I really won't be offended if this doesn't get reviewed but in the interests of keeping the swap going here's mine: The Mix It's a journey into what I'm listening to at the minute and should at least give people a taste of electronic music they are unlikely to have heard before. Yes, even you Jay! Please listen to in order, preferably on some decent speakers or headphones. Enjoy. Track - Artist Rusty Break - Boxcutter Evolution - Bay Area Dubstep Victim Support - Distance Double Face (feat. Kate Kestrel) - Milanese Pop Pop - Vex'd Dark Alley - Starkey Lipton Service Boy - Eero Johannes Boys Away - SCSI-9 My Red Hot Car - Squarepusher Vordhosbn - Aphex Twin Don't Mind - Calibre Hajnal - Venetian Snares
Fez of Mahrez Posted 1 December 2008 Posted 1 December 2008 Just had a quick nip through this. Got a bit confused cos I thought I'd recommended Eero Johannes to you, then saw I had nothing by him/them/whatever in my library so I assume in fact you recommended it to me. I don't even do drugs. Old age perhaps. And bizarrely, I nearly put that SCSI-9 track on my CD swap! That would have freaked you out! Enjoying a lot of Kompakt and related minimal stuff at the moment, my brother got me into it. Gonna do another mix at some point, not necessarily for reviewing or anything. Will review this properly at some point mate.

As for SCSI-9 I literally only just started to listening to them. Heard quite a lot of minimal in clubs and stuff and a couple of mates run a night at El Paso in Old Street but fancied actually giving some of it a proer listen so got quite a bit off one of them. Cheers for the review. If you can reupload yours if it's not available anymore I'll return the favour.
James. Posted 2 December 2008 Author Posted 2 December 2008 Downloaded - now where's my free guitar!? I just know you're going to hate it so much! Surprise me my former French comrade, go on. I dare you.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 2 December 2008 Posted 2 December 2008 I just know you're going to hate it so much!Surprise me my former French comrade, go on. I dare you. I is eclectic u know. I have Goldie's Timeless album, so u can't say I hate D&B. We shall see.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Well, here goes then! Rusty Break - Boxcutter This is okay as background music, but to actually sit and listen to, as your main focus of entertainment, I found it a little repetitive for a 5 min track. Evolution - Bay Area Dubstep Enjoyed this much more, laid back an' ting. Do like a bit of dub now and again. Victim Support - Distance Really like this. It's menacing in a very dark way, almost claustrophobic. Probably over long again though. Double Face (feat. Kate Kestrel) - Milanese Probably my favourite track on this mix. Nice vocals (the best on this mix ) please tell me that Kate Kestral is her real name! Mellow. Pop Pop - Vex'd Wouldn't have sounded out of place on classic PS1 game Wipeout. In fact - I'm sure there's samples of at least 2 tracks from that great game in there. Dark Alley - Starkey Like this too. It moves around a lot more than the other tracks so far on this mix, which makes a welcome change. Lipton Service Boy - Eero Johannes Didn't like this. It's a little too... I dunno, in places it sounds like it might be a backing track for a Mario game. Boys Away - SCSI-9 Yes, yes!! I like the funky quirkiness of this. Got me seat-bopping. My Red Hot Car - Squarepusher Didn't like this one much at all. Too discordant. Vordhosbn - Aphex Twin Pretty much equally discordant - but better. Still not one of my favourites though. Don't Mind - Calibre 300 bpm on snares and not much more. Didn't like the vocals either. Hajnal - Venetian Snares This is the 3rd Venetian Snares track I've reviewed on FT, do they sponsor us or something, cos they should! In any case, I probably shouldn't like this, but I do - though at over 7 mins long, it does go flat in places. __________________________________________________________ Possibly my favourite mix so far, shame about the weak ending. Thanks very much James!
James. Posted 7 December 2008 Author Posted 7 December 2008 I just know you're going to hate it so much! Possibly my favourite mix so far I underestimated you. Thanks for the review. I'm actually really surprised you didn't like Squarepusher or Aphex Twin. For me, especially Aphex, they make some of the most fascinating, intricate and innovative music I've ever heard. To put the Aphex Twin song into context I'd recommend giving the album that I took it from a go - Drukqs. See what you think. Who else has put Venetian Snares on their compilations? I thought I was giving them an FT debut!
AoWW Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Ooh, I'd missed that this one had been uploaded. Will download it later and give it a listen. Lots of stuff on there that I'm pretty sure I'll like. I like guitars too, though.

I agree with TLB though that the ending was slightly below the standard set along the mix.

shen Posted 7 December 2008 Posted 7 December 2008 Thanks. Funnily enough I thought the end was better than the beginning! It might just be me. I find it a bit exhaustive to listen to your mix especially once it gets to the last 2-3 songs. They might not necessarily be 'weaker' than the previous tracks, but my saturation level has been reached by then. I thoroughly appreciate your mix though (I might look into more of it) and have enjoyed every mix so far, just for the fact that most of it is new to me

Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 December 2008 Posted 8 December 2008 I underestimated you. Underestimate me at your peril! Thanks for the review. To put the Aphex Twin song into context I'd recommend giving the album that I took it from a go - Drukqs. See what you think. I'm familair with Aphex Twin from Windowlicker, which is ok, but I couldn't see the fuss about it. Who else has put Venetian Snares on their compilations? I thought I was giving them an FT debut! Pretty Sure Mark did. This time and the last time
James. Posted 8 December 2008 Author Posted 8 December 2008 Windowlicker is just one song though. Not really reflective of most of his work. Try that album, or maybe Hangable Auto Bulb. Patience is required but it's very rewarding music.
Mark Posted 8 December 2008 Posted 8 December 2008 Pretty good to start off with but the middle section wasn't the best. I liked the distance track so looked into them more and am liking the song Traffic by them. Evolution was good as well. Good choices by Aphex Twin and VS too

From the comments, I'd say Drukqs is the wrong album to start with - I Care Because You Do would be a better one.
James. Posted 10 December 2008 Author Posted 10 December 2008 From the comments, I'd say Drukqs is the wrong album to start with - I Care Because You Do would be a better one. Fair enough. To be honest the only albums I actually own of his are Drukqs and Auto Hangable Light Bulb. I may well give that one you suggested a go as well. Cheers.
General Smuts Posted 10 December 2008 Posted 10 December 2008 I already hate it. And that's from the title.
