What would be the best thing to do...

Had a knock on the door about 9pm earlier. Opended it to find a chubby, little gypo looking girl standing there who then started singing "We Wish you a Merry Christmas".

Thought nothing of it at the time and went back to the telly.

10:40 another knock on the door. Answered it to find two definate gypo lads standing there about the same age as me, about 17/18, asking if i'd seen a black and white cat...

I said I hadn't to which they replied "oh, okay mate" and left.

Now either this is my imagination going overboard or would I be right to sleep with a knife next to my bed tonight.

Got a feeling that my house might be a target for a Xmas time robbery, we've got a Xmas Tree well lit in the living room which you can see from the front window, with the common mistake of putting the presents around the bottom of it.

Just seems very, very odd to have people knocking the door this late for such stupid reasons. The only thing I can think of is that they have saw the presents around the tree, saw the tv and pc downstairs too and are trying to get an idea of what people/how many, live here.

I've black bagged the pressies and stuck them in the attic, and have locked up all doors as I always have done anyway.

Am I being a gay, or would you say this is probably a safe thing to do!!!

Without wishing to categorise or generalise, I'd say you're right to be cautious.

A few years ago gypos broke into our house and stole our fridge/freezer with ALL of the christmas food/drink in.

Our house backs on to a public playing field and at this moment in time gypos were living on the field, and when we got broken into there was a trail of freezer trays, and tyre marks leading up to the caravans; yet the police never found out who robbed us.

fooking fuming.

Can i please have a defintion of a gypo? Is it just a term used instead of scum or something or a gang of criminals please explain

People who travel from area to area and rob peoples christmas dinners, thats's as far as my experiences go.

Generally speaking, and except for serious crimes or public order situations, the Police seem to avoid getting involved with travellers.

Don't think there's one law that's applied for all in this country because there's not.

And there's various problems with travellers.

Often, they don't own houses, they don't have jobs they can be sacked from, they don't have bank accounts, they deal in cash, they don't fit the system, they don't like answering questions and if you offend one you offend all in the group.

They're hassle. Indeed any community which presents a united front is hassle but there aren't many.

The problems for the police in your situation would be several...getting witnesses to testify and make statements, getting evidence, getting anyone accused to turn up, getting anyone found guilty to pay the fines and so on....while all the time there would be the threat to them, the threat to public order and possibly the threat to anyone in your community who had spoken to the police.

Gangs operate in a similar fashion. Look how long it took the police to bring that lad who killed the young boy in Liverpool to justice because gangs don't talk to the police and, even having secured a conviction, the main witness has reportedly had to move away from the area and be given an entirely new life and identity.

Bottom line is that, with what amounts to petty theft, the time and effort spent by police in trying to convict the travellers you say were the culprits would be wasted because they'd find it difficult to secure a conviction and even more difficult to get any money out of them if the case was won.

And don't forget too. There's people in this government will have no sympathy for you if you're a property owner. They'll happily rob you themselves on any pretence they can dream up be it for speeding, parking, dropping litter or whatever.

A bit of petty theft is just unofficial redistribution of wealth rather like shoplifting, and you can see every day how that's tolerated on a massive scale.

Police, theft, gypos.

The problem.

A camp of a number of itinerants, and determining which one has actually committed the act.

The response.

The victim is insured, so they haven't 'lost out'.

Consequences.

We all end up paying more for our contents insurance, a new [insert stolen item] doesn't make the victim feel any less violated, and in the mean time, the person or persons responsible carry on living off of the back of other people instead of getting off their arses and actually working like the people they thieve from.

doesn't this apply to most thefts and burglaries ? how many actually get solved :dunno:

surely ( and yes , i'm guessing here) most crime is commited by people living in houses , probably very big ones too

but its a good "daily mail type crusade" against a group of people
