A mate of mine went to Cuba last year.

It's a bit run-down, for obvious reasons, but apparently well worth the experience.

I'll probably be going there myself in the summer.

It's amazing.

Read this: Great article on Cuba.

Fantastic summary of the current situaion and ties back very well with what my girlfriend and I were thinking as we travelled across the central and western parts of the island. If you want any tips on where to go and what to do let me know. I went last October for 2 weeks.

Cheers.

The article was pretty grim, though. It seems like the combined effect of sanctions and recent hurricanes are taking their toll.

They are indeed, and that's the feeling you get from speaking to the Cuban people. Don't let that put you off though. Luckily my girlfriend speaks quite good Spanish which made the trip a lot more fulfilling and interesting. It's a complicated, fascinating, difficult, contradictory place, we felt we'd had a 2 week adventure in culture and history as opposed to just a holiday.

Looks like Laganas in Zante for us this year. Went Malia last year and it's awesome there, and still very much in love with Magaluf. What a place!

Same in Playa del Carmen (40 minutes away from Cancun) and imo far far better than Cancun! Can't wait until I'm back there in May.
Came here simply to post Playa Del Carmen, much nicer than Cancun.

It's nice. If you stay in one of the Riu hotels, you get optics in your room. Ours had

They also had Corona on tap. And it was the World Cup. Fantastic.

That's pretty much what my mate told me. He also warned about the mosquitoes though..

This year, he and his wife are going to somewhere more relaxing - the Middle East...

This mate... are you sure it's not me?! This year my girlfriend and I are planning on doing a 2 week trip to Jordan, Syria and Israel... lol

EDIT: re the mosquitos, I was bitten over 70 times on just my ELBOWS on one trip to the beach where we strayed slightly off the beaten track. Paid a heavy price, that was nasty.

I've been looking at the Cape Verde Islands (ex Portuguese colony off west africa ) further south than Madeira and Canaries and hence quite a bit warmer even in january/february

Naah, they're doing Egypt, Israel and Jordan.

At least they're not likely to be caught up in any tourist stampede..
