Bellend Sebastian Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Apologies if posted elsewhere already. Bum: http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/thew...il/article.html I've beem to some great gigs there over the years. I've also seen Cast there
Finchy Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Pretty much screwed for decent gigs in Leicester then In a city the size of Leicester there really should be a better live music venue
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Apologies if posted elsewhere already.Bum: http://www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk/thew...il/article.html I've beem to some great gigs there over the years. I've also seen Cast there Sad news. Was just about to post this myself having just bought the Mercury. They never should have got rid of the "pub" part of the building. At that point I became too big for most of the bands it could host and yet too small to attract many bands of national reknown. Having said that I have seen St Etienne, The Zutons, The Thrills, The Subways, The Bees, Willy Mason and many other lesser known bands there.

I never understood the reasoning for the redevelopment. It didn't make the venue part any bigger did, it? And there was nowhere to sit
Libertine Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Can't believe the size of some of the bands that've played there. Only been there once myself for my Uncle's band.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 You've forgotten your roots, man.I never understood the reasoning for the redevelopment. It didn't make the venue part any bigger did, it? And there was nowhere to sit oops, I meant it!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 15 January 2009 Author Posted 15 January 2009 oops, I meant it! I actually am too big for a lot of the bands they have on. I thought live music was supposed to be doing well at the moment. Maybe the toilets have become so squalid at the Charlotte that even students refuse to go in there now
Joe. Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Very disappointing to see it go, it's played host to some fantastic artists in the past. Just begs the question where will bands come now to play in Leicester? Nowhere? Only seen The Wombats and Milburn there but both great gigs.
hairy Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Terrible news. Seen Oasis, Ride, Gaye Bykers, Crazyhead, Dead 60s, Anastasia Screamed, TV Smith, One Dove, Back to the Planet, Citizen Fish, Rhythmites, Banco De Gaia to name a few there PS Oasis were shit
Corky Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Me and AoWW went in there last Friday. Lovely pub Oh sorry, thought you meant the "Queen Charlotte"
Bert Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Shame it's closing down really. Where are all the arrogant Indie snobs going to go to gigs now?
General Smuts Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Shame it's closing down really. Where are all the arrogant Indie snobs going to go to gigs now? Don't worry darling, i'll find somewhere. Just found out myself to day and im gutted, really hope they get some backing. Been to some epic gigs there over the years. Fall Out Boy, Wombats, Fratellis, The View, Uncle Brian, My Awesome Compillation, Senses Fail, Mystery Jets, The Holloways, The Pipettes, The Enemy, and Little Man Tate.
LCFC123 Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 My favourite music venue around leicester aswell
Big Ol' Bob Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Leicester is far more interested in pumping money into building shit like the highcross, curve etc. Just give us a good music venue you fookers.
Finchy Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Leicester is far more interested in pumping money into building shit like the highcross, curve etc.Just give us a good music venue you fookers. Disagree with you about the Highcross, we need that and it's great, I also think Curve is a good thing, hopefully it will work out. But you're right about the council not caring about a decent live music venue, it's something this city really needs, especially if De Montfort hall is just gonna put sh*t on.
Ultra Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 Leicester is far more interested in pumping money into building shit like the highcross, curve etc.Just give us a good music venue you fookers. The management of the venue has to take a lot of the blame. It's across the road from DMU, yet what has it done to encourage students to drink there rather than the Quay or Soar Point?
Lillehamring Posted 15 January 2009 Posted 15 January 2009 definately agree that they screwed up when they knocked it through, the pub bit was always rammed, and no one watches the bands from that bit either, someone should mention this to andy wright before his meeting with punch. so many decent bands played there, and i'm just pleased that i actually got to play it once - even if it was just adlibbing vocals to an entire stoner-rock set but just one of many, i liked the magazine, and they (DMU) also bulldozed the one round the corner towards the swan & rushes... and there was the one on charles street (bulldozed) and the one (sorry i'm crap with names) near the railway station (bulldozed) - i always thought the old cannon/abc cinema would be perfect for a venue - a la rock city - hmmm, now remind me, what happened to that... at least the musician is hanging in there

Bellend Sebastian Posted 16 January 2009 Author Posted 16 January 2009 Shame it's closing down really. Where are all the arrogant Indie snobs going to go to gigs now? Where they're going already. Nottingham
Guest Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Can't believe it's closing I remember seeing one of my favourite gigs ever down there, a guy called David Poe. We actually went down to see The Unbelievable Truth (who were wank) and had never heard of this guy before that night. One fantastic performance later and I've been a fan ever since
Rocket-Ron Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 This was on the news round up on 6 music yesterday evening. The bloke they interviewed said that non of the bands want to do individual tours of smaller venues anymore, prefering to go on the NME and Gonzo tours! Hope that 65 days of static are still on not until march

Lillehamring Posted 16 January 2009 Posted 16 January 2009 Yes yes yes Val - I've said that many times too. well, now we can stand in the road they have replaced it with and mourn the further destruction of the city
