Is there Grass-Roots Football in America? I.e Saturday and Sunday local leagues. Or is it just MLS and College/Uni Leagues?

Yes loads but its usually quite young players. My firm even play in a 5 aside league. We came 3rd out of 6 teams. >_< I was the top scorer in our team though.

Like 99% of teams from that era, they went bankrupt in the 80s. Tampa then got an MLS team when it started, which shut down pretty quickly too.

woo hoo

hopefully they keep the old kit.... zinger!

I'm guessing LA only have the Galaxy?

By my reckoning if I support the Lakers in basketball I have to support other LA teams in other sports. Which is a bit shit, because I don't want to support Galaxy lol

Columbus for having the best fans/players gets my vote

Toronto for being Canadian and pelting the corner taker with bog roll

And San Jose 'cus its the closest to San Fransisco

Philli's team should be good

lol

If their soccer fans are as good as the American Football fans can be, then fairplay. Can you imagine that sort of passion over here  ?

I've decided to enjoy the MLS this season (First Kick March 19th).

I've picked Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders as my teams (East and West). I shall chart their progress.

I know theres a few Yanks on here - who do you follow and what do we think of the new Seattle team and the soon to be Philadelphia team?

What are the brits thoughts on MLS?

Discuss ...

By all means enjoy the upcoming MLS season..But..and it's a big butt(this is about Shittle(S**ttle) why the Shittle Flounders? Their fans(all 12 of em) are pudgy, powdered doughnut munching, Lattee swiggy nerds. Why do you think Paul Allen(Microsoft multi billionaire)is part owner. Please do your research and pick another team..please, for your own sake. :chant:

I've got to represent for Red Bull New York. Or "New York Red Bulls," as the playing squad is known. They used to be named MetroStars (originally "New York/New Jersey MetroStars"), and most of us just called them Metro. A lot of us still call them Metro--old habits die hard, and well, I'd kinda feel like a penishead calling a team the Red Bulls.

Yes, they actually did make it to MLS Cup 2008, but I'll just leave it at this: for all of you out there looking for a team to support: If you liked Leicester City from 2004-2008, you'll love the Metro.

Aww, shucks. Yep, they've had a mediocre history, and their whole stadium situation sucks (well for one more season anyway), but they're my team, and every time I get sick of all the crap I still eventually find my way back to support them.

haha. You forgot to mention that Drew Carey is part owner and the team has a marching band :D (although they may let the fans have a big say in front office matters, which would be solid... and Kasey Keller is playing for them.)

Kasey Keller played at the U. of Portland and for the Timbers..so it was quite a shock to see him modeling Flounder gear. It is a business after all..speaking of business and totally off topic..how's Yankee stadium coming along? Have you been down to look at the progress Jordan?

American Soccer fans are much better than the american football fans, but they just have lower numbers.

They have it much easier over there than we do, no stewards telling them to sit, plus the hardcore have their own sections, cheap beer, relaxed rules, its like it was in england 20+ years ago.

It was Drew Carey that threw it for me. Plus Freddie and Kasey (and rumour has it eventually Thierry Henry).

Toronto will be my main team though. Danny Dichio

[Philadelphia] are building a new stadium for the team, should be a cracker.

Unfortunately for Philly, they've got Nick Sackiewicz running the stadium project, and he did an awful, awful job getting one built for Metro. He made lots of empty promises and severely underestimated how tough it is to get things done in Jersey politics.

Is there Grass-Roots Football in America? I.e Saturday and Sunday local leagues. Or is it just MLS and College/Uni Leagues?

There are plenty of amateur leagues... plus lots of 5/6-a-side. In fact, a new Guiness World Record for longest soccer game at an indoor place just five blocks away from my apartment. Most amateur leagues are local, there isn't so much of a connection between leagues nationwide or regionally.

Oh just that my mate has just done 9 Months of Soccer Coaching in America and by all means it's booming. It's going to be bigger than England because of the facilities and money that is around. But haven't players got a problem with Beckham and Angel because of their high wages and players are on smaller amounts? I think alot more states need teams and English Divisional System to be put in place instead of Real Salt Lake coming over to DC United which is why USA is proving to be struggling to come out of gear 1. I'm looking to coach in America in a year or two, they are begging for the English game to be brought over by us and USA provides it on a plate, definately going to develop into the best league in the world.

I'd also like to see a larger top-tier professional system in the United States, but we're still a few decent American players short of making that worthwhile. A few years ago, the standard in MLS was poor with only 10 teams. Also, I'm not necessarily sure an Anglocentric model is our most urgent need right now; The two biggest things we need are more technical skill from our younger players and better tactical nous at the national team level. However, the direct play favored by English teams tends to do very well against continental opposition and American clubs haven't fully solved how to handle other opposition (intercontinental competition comes most often from Mexican clubs) and the domestic season is still most teams' highest priority, although more international competition is starting to erode this.

That said, I'm curious to find out what aspects of the English style you think would be best suited for American players. Things are definitely different here with regards to young player development than they are in most places in the world (for decades, this wasn't a good thing). I've seen a bunch of English players and coaches that think they can come here and settle down with a great coaching job, but then most of the work turns out to be seasonal jobs. What kind of a coaching job would you want? Do all the networking you can--you definitely don't want to get stuck outside in scorching heat coaching six-year-olds with ADHD in one-week clinics!

Some players are a bit irritated at some of the marquee players getting preferential treatment, but let's be real: Beckham--all of his injury problems and a couple of crap seasons from nearly everyone involved with the LA Galaxy aside--has done wonders to increase soccer awareness in our country just by being here. And if there's any one of Angel's teammates complaining about him, they can pack up and go find work elsewhere because there's no question that he's been the team's most valuable player since the day he came here.

Funny you should ask--I was thinking about the new stadium and the new season at work today and was considering finding some time this month to go down and check it out. I was looking at the most recent photos of it, and it's going to be a palace, as planned. I walked outside the new stadium at the last game I went to, in August, but since then I've only seen it on the train while passing through the Bronx and in photos. General sale for '09 individual game tickets will start soon; I might even go down to the box office (thinking about going on Washington's Birthday if the tickets are on sale by then) instead of online because I can save a few bucks on tickets thanks to an assist from placidcasual

Just like how everyone had to visit the old Yankee Stadium in its final year, everyone's going to go mad to get tickets for the first year in the new digs; this, combined with a reduction in seats (with less cheap seats and more chairs for the high-rollers) is going to keep my game attendance low this season (even though by sometime next season, I'll be able to take a train from my town in Westchester right across the street from the ballpark instead of having to go down to Manhattan and take a jam-packed 4 train back across the Harlem River). It's going to be a beautiful ballpark, but it's going to be too sterile for my taste. I liked the mix of history, amenities and griminess at the old place, and even 12 years ago, there was a better atmosphere there with 25,000 fans on a Tuesday night than there was with almost 55,000 at nearly every game last year. Plus I'm not too thrilled with the way the Yankees fleeced New York taxpayers.

Now let's get Red Bull Arena going in NJ already... perhaps in time there will be another new soccer stadium built in NYC--either that or the Mets' owners try to figure out how a new team can play on Citi Field?

Jordan..it won't be quite the same in NY without the house that Ruth built. You made mention of Mexican teams..I've booked my flight and have tickets for the WCQ in Columbus next week..your not going by any chance?

I was looking around the internet for pictures of RB Arena. All i found was some started construction. I hope the stadium will be as impressive as they say it will on the website.

I hope New York gets another team in the next 5 years. And as you said, Citi Field would be an ideal location for a new team to play because Flushing is a "soccer hotbed of the country". The only problem is obviously fixture clashes as MLS and MLB are both in the summer.

I'm going to miss RBNY's home opener because my friends are having a baby shower/guys drinking beer and playing poker gathering. I'm all for modernization of gender roles, but I still believe men shouldn't be within 10 miles of any baby-shower-like activity and I've expressed my disappointment with the date given.

One more season at Giants Stadium before the move to Red Bull Arena... Since the new stadium is already a few seasons late, I guess we can deal with the Swamp for one more year before having a more proper atmosphere at games. Besides the silly psuedo-hooligan posturing that sometimes occurs in C-Bus, I'm still quite envious of their crowd.
