General Smuts Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 I've decided to enjoy the MLS this season (First Kick March 19th). I've picked Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders as my teams (East and West). I shall chart their progress. I know theres a few Yanks on here - who do you follow and what do we think of the new Seattle team and the soon to be Philadelphia team? What are the brits thoughts on MLS? Discuss ...
Finnegan Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Gunna move me to the States and play in the MLS. If Carl Robinson can, ANYONE can It's all about DC United.
New England Fox Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 I'm Leicester born and bred, but live in Connecticut so I guess I'm an honorary Yank (kind of). I follow New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls are closer to me than the Rev but New England have Steve Nicol in charge so that swayed my vote.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 There's going to be a Pennsylvania team? They'll be getting my support, for now though, come on Colorado.
GLC Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 My team played as them on Fifa 2003 Taylor Twellman is a great player
purpleronnie Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 There's going to be a Pennsylvania team? They'll be getting my support, for now though, come on Colorado. Philadelphia are joining the MLS I cant remember if its this seaon or next I'm a bit out of the loop, they will be very interesting they already have a supporters group which have become quite famous as they only just got a team and their membership is over 2,000 fans. They have gone to games in new york and last years final just to give the opposition grief, love it!!! I will miss the first houston games but I cant wait!!!!!! although I will miss the snow.

Any team from Philadelphia somehow gets my vote. The Eagles, Flyers, and the Phillies (even though I'm not a fan of baseball). Now I've made it my mission to get a shirt when they form.
Samilktray Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Do Atlanta have a team, or should I say Georgia?
General Smuts Posted 3 February 2009 Author Posted 3 February 2009 There's going to be a Pennsylvania team? They'll be getting my support, for now though, come on Colorado. Sorry - i meant Philadelphia. I confuse easily.
purpleronnie Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Do Atlanta have a team, or should I say Georgia? Not yet.

They are building a new stadium for the team, should be a cracker.
Lillehamring Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 i have a programme from the 80s for tampa bay rowdies - do they still exist.... i sound like montgomery burns
fox123 Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 My team shall be Kansas City Wizards. Soon to be playing at this lovely venue...
Tilley Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Watch one MLS game & you will be grateful for Andy Gray.
Tevez Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Americans can't even kick a round ball of leather, give them 20 more years.
act smiley Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Do Atlanta have a team, or should I say Georgia? They've got an average second-tier side in USL1, the Atlanta Silverbacks. No idea why they'd name them after a gorilla though. i have a programme from the 80s for tampa bay rowdies - do they still exist....i sound like montgomery burns Like 99% of teams from that era, they went bankrupt in the 80s. Tampa then got an MLS team when it started, which shut down pretty quickly too.
purpleronnie Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Watch one MLS game & you will be grateful for Andy Gray. I like them but almost every American I've spoken to hate them. They make me laugh.
purpleronnie Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Americans can't even kick a round ball of leather, give them 20 more years. You might be surprised, I was. I would compare it to Championship level. Its booming so much in the US and so much money is coming into the MLS that I agree that in the next 20 years the US will have a damn good team.

Oh just that my mate has just done 9 Months of Soccer Coaching in America and by all means it's booming. It's going to be bigger than England because of the facilities and money that is around. But haven't players got a problem with Beckham and Angel because of their high wages and players are on smaller amounts? I think alot more states need teams and English Divisional System to be put in place instead of Real Salt Lake coming over to DC United which is why USA is proving to be struggling to come out of gear 1. I'm looking to coach in America in a year or two, they are begging for the English game to be brought over by us and USA provides it on a plate, definately going to develop into the best league in the world.

The amount of money in sport in the US is truely astonishing. Yes the Beckham factor isnt all good, it certainly has boosted the media coverage and attendances but the wage cap is a little weird. I'm sure as more and more money comes in and more and more teams join the MLS it will be a free market, this will mean most teams will be able to afford many star players and the lifestyle the Americans offer is very good along with things like the most update facilities and amazing stadiums and even things like the weather will attract big names to the MLS. Plus the fans are really into it, no player wants to play in front of small quiet crowds but now lots of teams sell out games, Houston got 30,000+ and Toronto sell out every game (about 20,000). With more team coming into the MLS more rivalries are starting up, its just going to become huge. Every club has at least one supporters group, its very different to england they are influenced by the ultras and are very colourful, banners, flags, smoke, etc... And stand and sing for 90mins win lose or draw, I'm pretty sure most english people have no idea what the crowds are like over here. Of course there are tacky and cringey moments, it is america afterall, but clubs actively encourage fans to make noise and be rowdy. Its something I think they will have to control in the future because already there have been incidents and I dont think the american police/stewards know or care about controlling football crowds. I think they will adopt a promotion and relegation style system in the MLS as soon as more teams join. But I'm not sure some cities will be happy at starting off in the 2nd division, plus relegation and promotion isnt used in American sports but the fans do want it.
Tevez Posted 3 February 2009 Posted 3 February 2009 Is there Grass-Roots Football in America? I.e Saturday and Sunday local leagues. Or is it just MLS and College/Uni Leagues?
placidcasual Posted 4 February 2009 Posted 4 February 2009 No mention of the champions as yet? Poor show. Season starts around March 21st I think.
