Joe. Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 Could use this thread for future England squads/teams too? From: Goalkeepers: David James (Portsmouth), Robert Green (West Ham United), Ben Foster (Manchester United) Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Joleon Lescott (Everton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), John Terry (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Matthew Upson (West Ham United) Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), David Beckham (AC Milan), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool). Forwards: Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Peter Crouch (Portsmouth), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United). James Johnson Terry Ferdinand Cole BarryWright-Phillips LennonGerrard Rooney HeskeyGerrard HAS to have that role right there. He's England's best player without a doubt and he's been played out of position for far too long. If it means leaving Lampard out then so be it. The left side is still a bit of a problem and I'm not convinced with putting Lennon there but I really don't like Downing at all. Lennon deserves a place on current form, and either him or Wright-Phillips are about the only ones left who are useful wingers.

Course he should be in the squad - yes bringing youth into the squad is good but you also need that bit of experience in it aswell. I think Beckham has come to terms that he wont be a regular starter for England again but he is in there for his experience. Fairplay to him. As long as Capello see's that to get the best out of your players then you have to adopt a formation that will get the best out of them so 4-2-3-1 is formation to get the best out of the players that are actually world class. Rooney and Gerrard and if that doesnt work then you can slot Lampard into Gerrard's role and see how he fairs there, at least they will have had a fair crack at that position.

Koke Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 Why do people want Calamity James in goal? Kirkland/Green Johnson Terry Ferdinand Cole Carrick Gerrard Lampard J. Cole Crouch Rooney We don't really have any consistent wingers, so we may as well play to our strength.
Uncle Albert Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 I dont know why people would like to see England play 3 at the back, barely works at International level. Last time England played that formation we had a mare, anyone remember?
Ultra Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 Walcott and Joe Cole should definitely play when fit. For next week, Wright-Phillips and Lampard will do. The worst-case scenario would be if Capello picked both Downing AND Beckham..

Uncle Albert Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 Why are people putting players down for their teams who arent in the squad at the minute? The team choice is based on the players currently available.

dandannieldanok Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 Green Johnson Terry Ferdinand Cole Lennon Lampard Carrick Downing Gerrard Rooney For me the defence picks itself and I hope Johnson can really grab the right-back slot and make it his own. In the midfield, I think Lennon most definitely deserves a go against Slovakia and I've only gone with Downing because we have no other left-wingers. I'd hate to see Rooney or Gerrard wasted out there like they have been previously. Up front I think we could struggle strength-in-depth wise. Gerrard maybe a strange choice to partner Rooney but if we play it on the floor then he might be useful playing just off Rooney. He's arguably the best finisher we've got at the moment.

Simi Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 James Johnson Terry Ferdinand ColeBarry CarrickSWP Gerrard LennonRooney Yes please. If that was played in the right way it would be devastating. Lennon and SWP both having really good seasons, I'm sure both of them could do major damage on each wing given the chance, we just need to find something consistent. I don't see why we want to carry on trying Beckham, we should be building a strong XI for the World Cup and I really don't see him being a big part of that.
TrickyTrev Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 FosterJohnson Terry Ferdinand A. Cole Wright-Phillips Gerrard Lampard Barry Heskey Rooney That is really forcing a 442. One of the worst traits of English football. Barry isn't a winger by any stretch of the imagination. No pace, no great skill. Left footed, thats about it. Gearrard and Lampard do not have the tactical discipline to be central players in a conventional 4-4-2, never mind partner each other. I also think Gerrard is totally wasted if he is not higher up the pitch. We only have one decent forward player, Rooney, but we have lots of good central midfield players. Seems to make sense to me to play a formation than capitalises on that rather than relying on Heskey. Heskey ver has been and never will be international standard. ...................Foster Johnson...Terry...Ferdinand...Cole .....Beckham...Carrick...Barry ..........Lampard...Gerrard ...................Rooney It is the same formation that AC Milan play, Clesea were playing somethign similar at the start of the season. With Walcott and Cole injured we don't have much on the wings, so lets give Gerrard and Lampard the freedom that they crave.

Uncle Albert Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 I think when everyone's fit I'd want to see something like; Foster Johnson Ferdinand Terry A ColeBarry CarrickWalcott Gerrard J ColeRooney 4-2-3-1! The future of English football.
TrickyTrev Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 I think when everyone's fit I'd want to see something like; Foster Johnson Ferdinand Terry A ColeBarry CarrickWalcott Gerrard J ColeRooney I think this is the team that Capello has in mind. You never have your best players available though. That is why it is good to try out different formations, so you can pick the best side given the players available to you.
TrickyTrev Posted 25 March 2009 Posted 25 March 2009 4-2-3-1!The future of English football. Well its certainly the present of English football. Both Man Utd and Liverpool have been employing it this season. I actually think Everton and Roma have been showing us the next hegemonic formation in football, the 4-6-0! With present day players fitness there is no reason that your midfield players can't also be your attacking players. The benefit of the formation is instead of hitting the one man up there, which inevitbly involves the ball coming straight back, the formation forces you to play through the midfield and gives you greater options in doing so. The defencive benefits are obvious. The midfields of both Roma and Everton are divided in to two, one unit in front of another. The further forward unit does all the pressing where as the depper unit does all the covering. It may sound silly but Man Utd played something very similar last season. With Tevez or Rooney playing nominally as the front man but having the same involvement in the deep build up play and defencive duties as the attacking midfield players. Scored a lot of goals and one the double too.
