Matt Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 ...Whats the crack with it? Just been made redundant with 4 other people and everyone else's hours have been cut down to working 4 days a week, My boss has said if work picks up he will offer us our jobs back - Which they have to by law anyway (If they employ anyone within 6 months they have to offer it to me/the people made redundant first anyway). I suppose being in shopfitting, Trade wise it was always going to be one of the first hit - People not spending on the high street > Shops not getting their shop re-fitted > Hits the shopfitting industry. I phoned some I know who works in a office at another shopfitting firm but she says exactly the same thing has happened there, so that's a no go at the moment. So looking at going into Kitchen fitting or something like that, I still have a few other contacts I need to phone first to see if they have any work but I don't think that will be looking too good, There are jobs out there - Someone needs something doing. Its just a case of have a go self employed or try and find someone else to employ me. I have got a fairly decent redundancy pay not brilliant but no matter what they gave you it could always be better! Best get looking on the trade agency's.

I would say Matt, you ought to sign on straight away, it's abit of a hassle, the job centre may have some jobs in your field, plus you get alittle bit of money comming in while your looking!! Anyway, good luck!!!
Alexikokopops Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Sorry to hear that chap. I believe you get about £90 every two weeks. That's what a couple of my mates got when they signed on last Summer.

I had to do this last week mate, it's no biggy...you can actually do a lot of the process online...then wait for a call, talk through some details, then they will give you a date to see a person who will tell you if you can or can't have JSA... I guess I am one of the lucky few who has a job to go into, as soon as my CRB comes back anyway.
BoneDog Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 I would try sign on for a bit if they let you. I think you can put a limit on how much you willing to work for (so they can't force you into something for 4quid an hour) and say where/what you want to do. I did it about 10 year ago and took about 4 week to sort out but they gave me money from when I went to first see them.

Monk Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 That's an awful thing to happen, I hope you can find something new soonish!
BoneDog Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Just seen your sig . Tosser HA I just learned how to do it bout an hour ago. I put Flynnys up cos it was in the thread where I learned it and it made me laugh. Then I went in general chat and the first one I saw was yours! I thought 'I'm havin that'!
Matt Posted 30 March 2009 Author Posted 30 March 2009 Sorry to hear that chap. I believe you get about £90 every two weeks. That's what a couple of my mates got when they signed on last Summer. Just looking into it, You get £94.95 if you are a couple/civil partnership (Both 18 or over) You get £47.95 if you are 16 - 24 You get £60.50 if you are 24-Over. The £47.95 applies to me I think. I had to do this last week mate, it's no biggy...you can actually do a lot of the process online...then wait for a call, talk through some details, then they will give you a date to see a person who will tell you if you can or can't have JSA...I guess I am one of the lucky few who has a job to go into, as soon as my CRB comes back anyway. Yeah i'm just looking into it seems quite simple, As I said I still have a couple of contacts I need to phone first. I would try sign on for a bit if they let you. Sounds good, I'd want to stick in the trade, and wouldn't want to travel to far (Within reason obviously, but what I mean is I don't want to be traveling all over the country for work) Not necessarily Carpentry/Joinery, but preferably - Redundancy might even be a blessing in disguise and I learn something else within the trade. I say might though

Matt Posted 30 March 2009 Author Posted 30 March 2009 Yeah, you get that per week, but they only pay it to you every two weeks so you get £95.90 every two weeks. That was the case last summer anyway Yeah I have just got to the bit where it says it is paid every 2 weeks, Correct! Oh well, I'm actually surprised how well I took the news, I'm not overly gutted, I'm trying to see it as a positive, Move on to a new place (Hopefully - Just finding that new place which is the only worry), I did my apprenticeship with the company and feel I will always been seen as the trainee - Despite being out of my apprenticeship for nearly 2 years. I have been tempted to leave in the past anyway but was so comfortable and happy to plod along at this company but now I have the chance and have been given the push to find somewhere else. As I said the only worry I have is finding another place, Starting at a new place, If it wasn't for the credit crunch i'd be quite confident of finding somewhere else but with the credit crunch jobs and specific jobs are going to hard to come by, having said that if it wasn't for the credit crunch I wouldn't be here now i'd be at work.

I found another job (with a substantial promotion and pay rise) within 6 weeks of starting my search and I work in credit crunch central - banking. If you get your name out there, search around, meet plenty of recruitment consultants and employers and nail down your interviews you'll get something. The jobs are going to those that want them the most. If you can demonstrate that then you will find somewhere. Good luck.

Monk Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Deutsche Bank. Ah congrats I didn't realise... in fact you may have told me at Millwall. Are you on London Wall now or are you serving out your notice at Citi?
James. Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Ah congrats I didn't realise... in fact you may have told me at Millwall. Are you on London Wall now or are you serving out your notice at Citi? No still at the Wharf. I will be telling my boss later today, hopefully won't have to work all my notice though so should get a couple of weeks off, start date is potentially 27th April. It's my last stab at the banking sector. Few years at Deutsche to get some capital together then I'm off to give something back to the world. EDIT: sorry for hijacking your thread Matt!
samingram_uk Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 A mate of a mate of mine tryed to sign on, but he was that broke he had no credit to ring them up to sign on . True story.
Milky Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 Singapore know how to do redundancies. A fire alarm, in a large office building, rang at 4 p.m. when almost all of the company's 500 employees were at work.As usual in such circumtances the entire office was evacuated within 3 mins & every employee gathered outside. Nothing happened for ten minutes or so and there was no evidence of a fire. Then the firms Security Officer made an announcement ... "Dear employees, with melting heart I am making this announcement that for many of you will be your last fire evacuation drill. Due to the recession the company are laying off almost fifty percent of staff. When you move back into the building some of you will discover that your swipe passcard will no longer give you access to the office. If you are among those laid off, go home and all your belongings will be couriered to you tomorrow. The management took this approach to save on overloading the email system with layoff notifications and goodbye messages and also to avoid any violent outbursts inside the office. Hope you have a nice career ahead ... please move forward and try your swipe card."

Matt Posted 30 March 2009 Author Posted 30 March 2009 Cheers everyone. Good luck. Yeah all that is true however I went round my mates who does the same thing as me but he went self employed just before Christmas due to finding a job to sub contract but that has all gone abit quiet so effectively he's got bits and bobs but pretty much same as me - Unemployed, So we have both been finding recruitment agency's all afternoon and every single one doesn't do trade and constructions jobs, We have asked if they know any that did and they said they didn't have a clue, I think I may have found a Construction Agency in Birmingham which I need to call tomorrow. Other 'leads' I need to follow and chase up is the possibility of sub contracting to a kitchen fitting firm (Providing we can find a company willing to sub contract fitting work out) and go self employed with my mate, phone all companies in specific work that I can find, e.t.c.
JoeyB Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 There was one who go round fitting out Airports. I can't think of the name but when i go to work i'll ask around for you! although it might not be untill monday when i find out pal.
Guest Posted 30 March 2009 Posted 30 March 2009 ...Whats the crack with it?Just been made redundant with 4 other people Sorry to read that, I am in a similar situation. It's crap. And because I will be going to uni in September full-time, I don't think I am allowed to sign on, even though I want a job in between finishing this one and starting my course. I hope things look up for you, and I am sure you will not be out of work for too long
