Matt Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 NINE Norwich City fans are today starting jail terms after going on the rampage in Leicester city centre.Three other Canaries fans were given suspended jail sentences and ordered to carry out unpaid work, while two Leicester City fans were also jailed following trouble when the two sides met on Saturday, February 16 last year. All of the defendants who appeared at Leicester Crown Court yesterday were given football banning orders for six years. Judge Michael Pert QC told the defendants: “It was pure chance no-one was hurt. I have to send a message that this kind of activity has nothing to do with football, and it shows no consideration for the rights of innocent bystanders. It was gratuitous thuggery.” The court heard that trouble had flared when a group of Norwich City fans left the match at the Walkers Stadium early and started walking into the city centre where they met a group of Leicester fans. CCTV footage showed the fans hurling missiles at one another including bricks, concrete blocks and chairs. One brick landed at the feet of a young girl standing nearby, but luckily no-one was injured. Ten of the Norwich fans had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to affray and three had pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of threatening behaviour. The Norwich fans jailed for seven months were James Asbery, 25, of Kingswood Avenue, Taverham, Nigel Broom, 38, of Orchard Road, Spixworth, Andrew Collison, 41, of Olive Road, Norwich, Gary Cox, 46, of Aldryche Road, Norwich, Leon Horton, 44, of Wilks Farm Drive, Sprowston and Ben Potter, 36, of North Park Avenue, Norwich. Mark Gilby, 44, of Greenacres Drive, Poringland, Mark Hipperson, 38, of Saxon Meadows, Bawdeswell and Michael Davies, 39, of Guernsey Road, Norwich, were jailed for three months. Adam Ford, 21, of St William's Way, Norwich, Thomas Stammler, 20, of Ferrars Court, Huntingdon and Paul Cossey, 21, of Marlingford Way, Easton, were given suspended sentences of seven months for two years and ordered to carry out 100 hours' unpaid work. Jamie Gilligan, 18, of Unthank Road, Norwich, who had previously pleaded guilty to affray, will be sentenced next week. Leicester fans Graham Anstiss, 45, of Wycombe Road, New Humberstone, and his son Damian Anstiss, 23, of Ditchling Avenue, Dane Hills, were jailed for seven months.
davieG Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 A Norwich fan recently wrote to the Mercury apologising to the people of Leicester for his 'out of character' hooligan behaviour. Don't know if he is one of this group

leicesterseddon Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 i have to say, out of all the matches last year after/before which this thing could have happened, i certainly wouldn't have picked norwich out as likely candidates...
Dan Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 7 months thats a major deterrant, plus they won't do 7 months they will be out before next season - which is probably good for Norwich fans, they've been hopeless this season. But if i'm being honest football violence doesn't really bother me unless innocent people become involved, and because they did, quite rightly they are behind bars.

So you don't mind all seater stadiums, over zealous stewarding, 12.15 KOs , being marched to away grounds like common criminals etc, etc? Because I can assure you they are all the result of football violence.

They'll have banning orders so it doesn't matter if they are out before the season starts.

I'm only 15 so i've not had loads of experience of stadiums that aren't all-seater, what I mean is i'm used to that so it doesn't bother me.

Dan Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 What about all the other stuff, it may not affect you at 15 but it will do eventually. Suppose Millwall was a pain in the arse waiting an hour, but we knew what to expect, and it was still a good laugh.
Guest Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 Suppose Millwall was a pain in the arse waiting an hour, but we knew what to expect, and it was still a good laugh. I was expecting half an hour, as per usual. I still feel that it's an infringement, and the sooner scum like this is purged from being associated with football, and the sooner I can do what I want, wear what I want and drink what I want and when, the better.
Dan Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 What baffles me about teams like Millwall is that they've had trouble like this for almost 30 years, surely by know they must know who the scumbags are, and why their not banned I will never know.

purpleronnie Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 Idiots, but I still don't agree that if its associated with football people get larger punishments.
Dan Posted 9 April 2009 Posted 9 April 2009 I have asked this question so many times. Well the Millwall chairman said it wasn't their fans fault for the trouble at Hull, so proof that he couldn't give a monkeys.

Not to mention the price of policing that the club ultimately passes on to us in ticket prices.
