Fez of Mahrez Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 What did you reckon? I thought they were biased towards us on more than a few occasions to be brutally honest. There was one game at the Walkers where I was getting a bit embarrassed the decisions were so bad. A couple of dodgy penalties in our favour too, Northampton away and possibly Southend away spring to mind. We've also had one or two who seemed to hate us and gave everything against us, particularly whenever Howard got near the ball. Went to Northampton v MK Dons on Tuesday night and Northampton barely got a single decision in the second half. It was bizarre. Akinfenwa was penalised whenever the ball went anywhere near him. The Championship is no better though, largely the same refs I guess. But let's face it, this season we haven't had many decisions like the Kisnorbo sending-offs last season. Of course we're going to get less of those when we're dominant in games but still noticeable.
Darkzzz_ Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 I know what you mean, I thought it evened itself out in the Hereford and Leeds games. So against us.
Thracian Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 Quite apart from the mistakes and lack of consistency, what got me most was how keen Division One officials were to stop the game and draw attention to themselves and how keen the best Premiership/European referees seem to be to let the game flow so you hardly noticed them.
MarkDeVries Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 Dunno. On the whole they did give us the majority of 50/50's but Big Steve was harshly treated on many an occasion. Especially against Leeds where he spagged out and shoved Dickov to get to the ref.
DB11 Posted 30 April 2009 Posted 30 April 2009 Premier League = 'Select Group' Championship, League One and League Two = 'Football League Referees' Same referees as last year.
leftsideoverhere Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 On the whole, poor.Inconsistent in the main. As poor as the refereeing has been, the quality of the assistants / linesmen has been worse. Routinely, you don't see them raise their flags for throws, etc., until after the referee has signalled - the idea that they are guiding the ref seems completely alien to them. And regularly they're behind the play and thus unable to give accurate offside decisions. I guess it's inevitable that they're even less self-assured than the refs at this level, but it all seems pretty pointless having assistants if they don't actually assist the ref.

Guest ttfn Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 I agree that there's certain games in which we've got the rub of the green with the refs but there were a couple where it seemed that the last thing they wanted to do was give us a decision. We've been denied numerous pretty clear pens this season (there was one home game I remember where Howard was clobbered about 5 yards inside the box and the ref gave a free kick outside)!
leftsideoverhere Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 They are there to assist not insist And your point is? When the ball goes off, they are supposed to signal which way they believe the throw should be given, since they are close to the play, and the ref often isn't when the ball gets close to the touchline, because he needs to have a wider view. If they wait until the ref signals the direction of the throw, and then put their flag up, they've not assisted, have they? In such a situation, I have never seen them put their flag up in the opposing direction to the ref, so they never provide additional information. Good assistant referees signal early, so that the ref can take their advice into consideration before making a decision. Those in league one rarely do that. That's all I'm saying.

Well I see that happen as much in the Premier as it does in the lower leagues and have often commented on it.
CosbehFox Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 After watching opening day and Stocky away, I thought the ref's were a breath of fresh air. But then it turned worse.....it got worse when the likes of Foy and Miller turned up though.
Ultra Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 Quite apart from the mistakes and lack of consistency, what got me most was how keen Division One officials were to stop the game and draw attention to themselves Is it any wonder, when the likes of Mike Riley have made a decent living in the game through doing precisely that?
Basingstoke Fox Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 I thought the ref at Peterborough away was shocking. That was unfortunately my only league game this sesason so I can't comment any more.
maddog Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 Theres only 1 or 2 referees i would class as good referees and would want them to ref our games in the whole country. And even Howard Webb made a drastic mistake at Old Trafford. The refs this season have been much better than i thought, but theres only been 3 or 4 games i've seen where the game was really allowed to flow. Who was the ref in the Leeds game @ the Walkers, he did a great job.
Bert Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 The ref V Leeds was perhaps the best we've had. But the rest have been god awful.
Pegosteve Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 And I suppose none of us ever make any mistakes at work... ever
Bert Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 And I suppose none of us ever make any mistakes at work... ever But at least if we do they're consistent.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 1 May 2009 Author Posted 1 May 2009 And I suppose none of us ever make any mistakes at work... ever And if I did, I'd be criticised by those affected.
act smiley Posted 1 May 2009 Posted 1 May 2009 But at least if we do they're consistent. Pffft. Pfffffffft. PPPFFFFFFFFFFT.
Jiggers the Fox Posted 4 May 2009 Posted 4 May 2009 Having been to almost every game this year i must admit ive found the refereeing on the whole pretty poor. Hartlepool away (league) comes to mind as one of the worst refereeing performances i have ever seen. A friend who has seen a good deal of conference league football hadn't seen anything like it!
flanimal Posted 4 May 2009 Posted 4 May 2009 I think the referees did well considering their man boobs weighed them down.

Yeah! That was embarrassing. Some of the decisions that night were a joke.
