England Bid for World Cup 2018

We perhaps could have brought Wales into the bid. The Millennium Stadium is better than anything in England apart from Wembley and possibly Twickenham.

Also it would have given Welsh fans their one and only chance to see their team in a World Cup final stage again...

Former World Cup winner Franz Beckenbauer believes England would be fit to host the World Cup "tomorrow" because of its stadiums and fans.

The ex-West Germany skipper sits on the Fifa committee that will decide the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts.

He stopped short of endorsing England's World Cup bid admitted he would like Europe to host the tournament in 2018.

"As a Uefa member, I would like to see it in Europe but it is an open race," he told Australia's Sun-Herald.

England is one of nine countries to have bid to host the World Cup in 2018 and one of 11 to have bid for 2022.

"England could host it tomorrow because they have the stadiums, the infrastructure, the fans, everything," Beckenbauer said. "But there are a lot of other different countries bidding. Let's wait and see."

Fifa will name the successful bidders in December 2010 but bids from the same continent as the chosen host for 2018 would be ineligible for 2022.

Given that the 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa and the 2014 tournament in Brazil, Beckenbauer said Europe should be next.

"It's (the decision) too far away, it's more than one year to go," he said. "(But) It will be Europe's turn.

Beckenbauer went on to say that Australia's chances to host the World Cup in 2022 could be strong if 2018 went to Europe.

"I think they have a good chance because the World Cup has never been to Australia," he said. "Australia's a beautiful country, a beautiful continent."

I'd be amazed if Australia didnt get it, just because they have never hosted it.

And me, but i'd be very happy for Australia to get either 2018 or 2022, aslong as we had the other one.

And i'd probably go to both, obviously being in England i'd go (Unless I do actually move Australia by then - If I do at all, but i'd probably come back to England that summer anyway if that was the case), and i'd probably go for the Australia one.

Leeds have only just got round to launching their bid.. :o

Councillor Andrew Carter, deputy council leader said: "Yorkshire is renowned for its sporting heritage and it's something we're passionate about here.

"We're also pretty amazing when it comes to hospitality and it would be a pleasure to welcome so many people to our part of the world."

I'm sure Manyoo and Millwall, among others, will testify to Yorkshire hospitality. I don't suppose they'll be so keen to stage any Turkey matches..

Agreed

MS is the Best ground in UK by far for me, the cup finals, play-offs etc. there were spectacular, it's wasted on Wales support.

Apparently we had the biggest average attendance outside the Premiership this season, Quite impressive.

We had the 2nd? 3rd? Biggest attendance in the Championship last season, not bad for a shit team, worst team/players/manager in our history, worst season in our history, e.t.c.

We do have quite big attendance's TBH, and if we got in the Premiership i'd say we would almost sell out most games (On our current capacity). If we had an expansion to 40k, I don't think we'd sell that out though. But I think our attendances compared to clubs of our size and clubs outside the Premiership are pretty good and impressive - Not atmosphere wise but turning up wise.

Huh ?? ... We posted an average of 29 440 last season ... a nothing season at that .....

Leicester had an average of 20 253.... a difference of nearly 10 000 people according to my maths....

Oh and to the chap reckoning we will only get around 22 000 next season ....we've sold 24k ST's....so er.....

And the freebie s**t is a drop in the ocean and mentioned by jealous rivals only....Rivals who also have freebie offers during the season ....

:appl::appl::appl::appl:

Having a board who gives a shit about you and season ticket prices on average a good £100 cheaper is hardly something to brang about on your 1st post.

Go and build somewhere to drink and maybe some surrounding features to your ground ready for our visit.

There are plenty of decent drinking venues within walking distance of Pride Park.

I'm not sure whether they'd fancy being overrun by our hordes, though....

Didn't need the applause :) . Just stating facts, something seemingly quite alien to a few posters on this thread...I mean, stating Leicester had the highest average attendance outside the prem last season

Anyway ,we do have some great pubs quite near PP, so if you're coming up here try The Brunswick on station approach...it's only 15 mins walk from the stadium, and very friendly, and has it's own brewery...The Alex next door also has great beer.....

Good luck with the WC bid ;)

Was in Nottingham all day yesterday.....sorry to say but i really don't think we have a chance of beating them......forget about Derby....

Nottingham has more issues than the Radio Times - and most importantly, NO suitable stadium.

As things stand, they're a poor third in the running in the region.

This.

The most outdated eligible stadium in the region, little realistic chance of a replacement being built given the finances and staus of the club and a rough hole of a city. Nottingham as a city, like its club, is a shadow of its former self.

I think a few people are a little blind to the fact that Nottingham is much MUCH prettier than Leicester and enjoys a decent amount of tourism there already whereas, Highcross aside, Leicester is dead and VERY dirty in comparison....it breaks my heart to say it but ive spent quite a bit of time up there and there's nothing else left to be said....by the way ive never encountered any crime whilst ive been up there....nor seen any.....personally i think Leicester city centre is much rougher.....Leicester is certainly poorer as a city....

The fact is when the delegates behind the bid come to look at Leicester they are not going to want to entertain the idea of the world cup coming here, they'll probably offer Nottingham money to get the stadium up to scratch

We are like Sunderland and Hull, decent stadiums but they City itself lets us all down badly.... :frusty:

The tourism element in Nottingham is exaggerated. That city, like certain football teams, plays up its history as a means of distracting from some unpleasant current realities.

Although the tram system there is impressive, its cost has pushed the local council to the edge of insolvency. And the trams do not serve the City Ground or the proposed venue for the so-called "megastadium".

And while other cities, Leicester included, may have some grim and unwelcoming estates, at least they are not in the grip of gun and/or knife crime as some areas of Nottingham are. Nor do our police force feel compelled to use tasers as a means of quelling street disorder.

Historically, we've had a pronounced inferiority complex towards our northern neighbour. But now can and should be the time when that is banished once and for all.

I agree with this, to an extent. There are still areas of our city centre that need some TLC, but to suggest Nottingham doesn't have any areas like this is a bit silly.

As I said though it doesn't matter which City is actually 'better' or what the Citizens of Leicester or Nottingham think it's what those in external positions of influence think and for whatever reason Nottingham has a higher profile and a higher level of acceptance as the bigger better City by those people.

That's why they have the BBC & ITV studio's, why EMA airport wanted to call it Nottingham airport etc.

You can't overcome that by the occasional media flurry it needs a sustained, grinding approach to change the hearts and minds of those people of influence. It would also be useful to have a focal identity, Robin Hood has certainly helped Nottingham in that respect and no matter how hard they've tried the councils of Leicester/shire haven't come up with one that has stuck.

Does being in the bid book actually guarantee any funding? I've heard that it does, but I've also heard that the FA/England 2018 won't be spending a penny. Confused :S

I agree about Nottingham though. If this big stadium gets built, I think Nottingham will be chosen ahead of Leicester. However, I just don't beleive it will all be sorted by this December. To be honest, I don't even think the thing will be built at all...

I agree with Ultra in that we should be looking to improve as a city and throw off the shadow Nottingham casts upon us

However the government, whoever it'll be at the time will be looking for future tourism and im sorry but Leicester will never offer that, what are we known for? Gary Lineker and a diverse population....and thats it...the only tourists ive ever met in Leicester are the ones that say they are just passing through, whenever i say im from Leicester people just blank, its like saying your from Milton Keynes, Ipswich or Norwich, nobody knows anything about these places, they are just....there.....a cultural black hole....

We are a big city with a big population but we have little appeal or importance.....thats why i said the only reason we'd ever be considered is if we build a bohemoth of a stadium but i still don't hear anything from he club concerning any sort of expansion, Ultra said that Notts doesn't have a fit stadium, well neither do we right now, so all the delegates can go on is the City as a whole......

I cant see anything but Nottingham winning the race with Leicester and Derby being used as one big fan park for the fans to spill out of Nottingham and Birmingham....

On another note that helps Nottingham hugely as davieg mentioned is Robin Hood.....and guess what the next Ridley Scott film starring Russell Crowe is all about.... because of him most of the globe knows about Nottingham whereas nobody in bloody France has heard of Leicester...... :S

theres no denying nottingham has a higher profile than leicester and have a better chance, they even have a hollywood blockbuster of robin hood coming out starring russel crowe.

- The Walkers has held a few international matches in recent years without issue

- Being host to the Special Olympics can only help the bid

- The multiculturalism would be a plus

- Leicester is a more sporting city compared to Notts and Derby

I think Leicester has a good chance to be honest, can't see Derby getting in there ahead of us.

...We would have held a Rugby World cup by then too hopefully.

Surely Loughborough will be getting used by some teams whatever happens?
