Budweiser Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 Do you think Steven Gerrard's performances for Liverpool match his performances for England?
Joe. Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 England's best and most important player without a doubt for me. Why don't his performances for Liverpool match those when he's playing for England? Playing him in the right position would be a good start. Liverpool mould their team around Gerrard, and England would be better off for doing it as well. When he plays in that free central midfield role behind the strikers he's a totally different player for England, and I've got absolutely no idea why we don't play him there every time. If we have to demote Lampard or Barry to the bench to accommodate him then so be it. He's the best player we've got, and it's time we should use him properly.
Fosse Boy Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 I would say that while he isn't as passionless as some others appear when they pull on the Three Lions, he appears to care a lot more for the fortunes of his club than he does for England. However, I would say that this is a common trait among top level footballers in this day and age and that if he is to be condemned for this attitude, he certainly shouldn't be singled out as the worst offender.
Flynny Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 He's a selfish stroppy cunt who could play absolutely anywhere on the pitch. He used to whine that he had to play central midfield and yet when Benitez sticks him behind a striker and he starts scoring goals he's suddenly saying that's where he should be playing. All this "natural position" stuff is absolute bollocks. Great player, though.

When Gerrard plays for Liverpool he is their most reliable player. When they are losing and they need a player to grab that all important goal, Gerrard is always there. I believe Gerrard can fade from the game with England. When England are having a bad game, you may not even realize he is on the pitch. However, I do agree with you, I am not doubting his talents as he is clearly world class. I think he is being played out of position and believe that in order to get the best performance out of Gerrard, Capello would probably have to drop Lampard, though thats just my opinion. Anyway, someone will probably post back with something alot better than mine.
Tevez Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 See what Gerrard does in South Africa, then I'll retract this thread.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 I think that even though Gerrard gives his all for both teams, he performs consistently better for his club. I can remember countless times in the last few seasons when Liverpool have been playing shite and he comes from no where and saves them. E.g. West Ham Cup final. I think he should always be in the team ahead of Lampard though as he is more versatile and is always giving 100% which I just dont think Lampard does.
Bryn Posted 14 August 2009 Posted 14 August 2009 I think he does alright for England. You need players who turn up for the big games and Gerrard ALWAYS does that, for club and country. He might not quite get stuck in with the littler games at times but he has a knack of popping up with a goal when England need one and generally puts in a good shift against the bigger teams.
Uncle Albert Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 It would help if Gerrard had a settled position for England so that we can get the best from him, even though his performances in this qualifying campaign have been very good. Gerrard isnt a left winger and neither a right winger, Rafa found this out. Gerrard's best position is the one that he is playing at Liverpool now easily, this let's him do what he is best at.. attacking the opposition goal. Most Premier League defence's can't handle Gerrard in this position so I think a fair few international teams wouldnt also. I think it's about time Capello realised this and dropped either Barry or Lampard. Gerrard will be our main man in South Africa with Rooney if both are fully fit and it will be crucial to keep them fit. All this rubbish that Gerrard doesnt have the passion for England, did anyone see him after the Croatia game at Wembley in 2007? One word to describe him after that match was distraught. Yeah obviously Liverpool will mean more to him and fair enough, if we were lucky to play for Leicester and England who would you be more bothered in playing for, Leicester or England?

Sparky Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 I'd like to think that I'd give my all every game for club and country. Yeah agree fully. All this club vs country bollocks , it should be club AND country. In my opinion since the arrival of Capello, Gerrards performances for England have been impressive and his position off the front man in tandem with Rooney suits him
StanSP Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 Yeah agree fully. Capello has made it known that no player is automatically picked, and that he will drop players if they don't perform.
Uncle Albert Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 I'd like to think that I'd give my all every game for club and country. I'm not saying Gerrard won't give his all for England but if it came to choosing a game to play in and you knew you had a bad groin and it meant playing for England or playing for Leicester who would it be? Just a simple question.

Uncle Albert Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 Probably England, I wouldn't be too keen to take any flak from the press for choosing club over country. Wise choice on that front but personally I would be more worried about the 46 or 38 games I could play in for my club than a friendly. That's just my view and I know others will disagree, Sparky will I know.

Just a simple question. If it was a qualifier then England for me, no bigger honour than representing your country. If it was a friendly then id have done the same as Gerrard
Uncle Albert Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 If it was a qualifier then England for me, no bigger honour than representing your country. If it was a friendly then id have done the same as Gerrard Yeah qualifier then the would be no greater feeling but this was a meaningless friendly in a sense, I don't this will count for anything going into the World Cup to be honest. I'm stuggling to think if I would be a club over country man or not.
Fosse Boy Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 It'd certainly be no debate for me if I was playing for any other club than Leicester, I'd pick England every time.

Barry and Lampard don't play anything like where you want Gerrard. They sit deep. Gerrard plays out on the left ostensibly but he swaps with Rooney, who is naturally inclined to hunt the ball. It's genius, it means that Rooney is central and thus able to score 11 times in 7 internationals, as he did in this formation, but then when he decides to fook off after the ball Gerrard is through the middle. And when Rooney is central, Gerrard supports the attack by cutting in from the left with Cole overlapping as Heskey drops deep as the focal point of the attack. The formation works.
Fox96 Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 Lampard rules. Lampard is and always has been one of my favourite players. But TBH I think Gerrards overall abilty is better. Im still a big fan of lampard though
Tevez Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 Club and Country are two different views of football. It shouldn't be both, infact, it can't be. Fair play to Gerrard for pulling out of Holland. 3 days before the season starts and why would he want to be shuffled around against a team that's already qualified? Pointless friendly.
lcfc_jme Posted 15 August 2009 Posted 15 August 2009 Gerrard is better than Lampard. And I'd only choose to play for country over club if I were called up by Ireland.
CosbehFox Posted 16 August 2009 Posted 16 August 2009 Gerrard is built around by Liverpool thus has a role more to the forefront. England, he's a number of quality players...so the tactics aren't based around him. Nothing about quality...more that he's more important for Liverpool than he is for England. Anyways under Capello and behind Rooney, he's probably been England's best performer recently.
