davieG Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 From the Merc; Play me up front and I will get goals – Paul Gallagher Paul Gallagher believes he would be better utilised as a main striker by Leicester City rather than a reluctant wide player. The Scotland international joined City from Blackburn Rovers for an undisclosed fee two weeks ago. He made his first two appearances for the club as a support striker for Matty Fryatt, but was pushed out to the left flank in the 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Monday. Gallagher has been used as a wide midfielder or winger many times in his career and has been effective cutting in from the touchline. He performed in various positions during two loan spells with Stoke City in the Championship, and has also gained experience with Preston North End and, last season, Plymouth Argyle. The 25-year-old stressed after his arrival from Blackburn that he is more than happy to play in any position boss Nigel Pearson asks of him, but feels he can make more of a positive contribution down the middle. "I think I am most effective playing just off the front man," said Gallagher, who was born in Glasgow and has one full Scotland cap. "I played there for Plymouth last season and I think I scored five goals in eight games. It went really well. I have played on the left and the right, which I don't mind doing because you have to help the team out. "But I think my main position is as a striker. I think if you look at the goals I have scored in the Championship you will find I got double figures for both Stoke and Plymouth. "If I can play to my potential up front I think I can score goals. "I played quite a lot on the left as well at Stoke and I scored quite a few goals there, but I would rather play up front." Last season, Gallagher managed 13 goals in 36 games for Plymouth, his best return yet. Gallagher has yet to register his first goal for City but came close with a superb first-half free kick on Monday. He admits he is hungry to get among the goals but won't put pressure on himself by setting a target. "I don't really set targets, I just focus on one game at a time," he added. "If I can get goals I will be happy, but I don't like to set targets."

Thracian Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 Hopefully NP will get the message and play Adams on the left and never play Gallagher on the wing again. Pearson did the same thing with Dickov when he arrived and that didn't work either. It happened under previous managers with Fryatt and Hume for instance.
Jimmy Posted 5 September 2009 Posted 5 September 2009 Gallagher scored a fair few goals fro Plymouth last season playing from the right wing, so it could work on that side but he definatly shouldn't be used on the left
AjcW Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 Sounds like he is unhappy already . I still wonder why we signed him if he isnt going to be played up front. So I would echo what he has said, stick him up top nige.
Fox92 Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 Agree with one of the post's above that Gallagher should be used on the right rather than the left such as at Plymouth when he scored 13 goals I think at this level, which is a good return for a winger and far better than what any of the other right wingers will probably do. Think I'd go with the midfield of; Gallagher -- Oakley -- Wellens -- N'Guessan
Fox92 Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 Whats up with the order of the posts?? I think they two threads have been merged into one...
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 best position behind front two, in the hole. But in place of who? Oakley/Wellens?
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 to be honest dont know. To be honest I didn't think so.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 what would you do. Have him on the bench. If Fryatt hasnt scored many in what is a fairly good month in terms of games, give Gallagher a go or if Howard is injured, give Gallagher a go. We have good strikers, but there is no way I would play Gallagher in midfield ahead of a captain or a playmaker in Oakley and Wellens.

I wouldn't play him infront of any of the midfield. None of them deserve to lose their place. I hope he isn't a player Pearson thinks he has to fit into the team.

brfc24 Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 to be honest ive only seen you play twice so i cant really comment.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 7 September 2009 Posted 7 September 2009 to be honest ive only seen you play twice so i cant really comment. So why did you? Gallagher is a good player at Championship level but I hope NP doesnt feel he has to play him ahead of our two very good strikers.
