As NSLL touched on it earlier, some people see God/religion as comforting. Knowing that they have God's faith and support can surprisingly go a very long way to reassuring people in life.

I envy people with faith, some are able to go through life thinking everything will be absolutely fine and everything is gods will. I have a scientific / analytical mind though and I could never accept something that has no evidence to back it up whatsoever, not even a hint of it at that.

I like to think I have an analytical mind, but still believe in my religion to an extent :dunno:

Admittedly it may not be as analytical as some on here.

Yeah... it's so much bigger than some bloke coming back to life, being the son of god born to a virgin mum.

:D It's just as far-fetched though.

Why is it so hard for whatever Created this Universe to bring a man back to life? Humans will probably be able to do it one day.

(although Jesus never died. He's somewhere else at this moment alive and will be back. Probably on a UFO) !

lol!

So true. Your response to that is El Empty?

Religion, in my opinion is absolute nonsense.

My response to that is this : Yes, some people find it hard to believe that there is an Unseen Force in this Universe that is way beyond human power or scope of imagination. I admit that. But the theory of evolution is just as outrageous sounding. Even Darwin himself admitted all the flaws of the theory and said something like this "if these problems are not sorted out with evidence then my theory is wrong". And there is still absolutely no evidence to back up this theory. Never will be if you ask me.

As for believing that Religion is nonsense (I admit that some of it is), did you know that the following major scientists all believed that something Created us and everything around us : Albert Einstein, Max Planck, William Thomson Kelvin, Gregor Mendel, Michael Faraday, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton, Rene Descartes and Galileo Galilei. There are many more.

One of Einsteins famous quotes of course is this : "Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind".

Perhaps if you heard some of these people talk about why they believed, then maybe you might of changed your view. :dunno:

Science and Religion do go hand in hand.

Had he seen the genetic codes of everything I think he'd be pretty sure.

Things have moved on somewhat in the last 400 years.

I don't see how you could believe that God created the world and heaven and hell etc. I honestly do not get why people believe in religion, so if someone could tell me why they do I would appreciate it and try and see.

I've gotta answer this about Heaven and Hell cos a few people have mentioned it.

Alot of folk seem to have the wrong impression of what Heaven is supposed to be. It will be (if it exists like I believe) another planet just like this one (or seven other planets as there are seven Heavens, the kindest and greatest of mankind will be in the most beautiful of the lot). We have all been born into a body on this planet so who's to say that after we die we won't be born into another body (with a few modifications) somewhere else? It is a miracle that we are all here now, it is no more unlikely that we will be somewhere else at another time.

Heaven will be similar to Earth with sky, water, trees, mountains etc. The difference with that planet though is that there will be no hatred whatsoever. It will be banished. As for Hell, this will be a planet too most likely, except it will not be tolerable and will be hard to bear for every person there.

Another point I saw mentioned about Hell is that people seem to believe that the Devil will be running it! This is not true. The Devil will be a companion of all there and will have the same hardships as the rest. But for now he is running around this Earth with his unseen minions trying to drag as many of us there with him.

So all of you rapists and un-necessarily vicious people out there, be warned, you will not get away with it! Be a lover, not a fighter alse you will throw away your soul for eternity. :D

You think animals adapting to their environment over 1000's of years a fairy tale.... yet you think THAT is entirely plausible.

Did anyone else just see that?............ It was El E's credibility going out the window.

If the Carlin skit wasn't a clue, I loathe organized religion and I'm a little bit embarassed for anyone that doesn't question the teachings of their faith at all. People think they have to believe hard to have faith and I think that's fairly spurious, really. There's a fantastic passage in Dogma where Chris Rock... aw fuck it, I found it. Let the man speak:

Train scene, six odd minutes, brief but you get the point - about how it's better to have an ideas than "belief" because an idea is easier to change.

My mother, who suffers severely from MS, has gotten years and years of relief from her faith and I'm grateful for that. I don't believe there's a God literally embracing her and dulling her pain but she does and placebo or not it helps and I'm happy for that. I'm also happy for some of the remarkable people at her church who kept her company for all those years, whether they felt religiously obligated to be nice to her or not.

But people who never question their faith, their beliefs or the things they told? As blindly ignorant, in my eyes, as the people who furiously and hugely arrogantly believe that human science can or ever will explain everything.

I created a monster with this thread, and all I wanted to know was why people describe this nation as a "Christian country"! It's like tangents 'r' us in this thread...

All I was trying to say about Heaven is that it wouldn't be like some people imagine with our soul or whatever it is floating around in space. It would be a real place like this.

I also know that people will think it sounds a load of bull. That's why I play on it and make things sound outrageous (like Jesus being on a UFO, although I'm not discounting that!). I do it to sound a bit far out on purpose sometimes. I don't think my credibility gone out the window though, cos I didn't have much anyway with some of my past theories :D

As for animals, yes I believe that they have been the same for all time. They all have their own purpose and have never changed. There have been animals that have become extinct yes, and some of them were similar to some creatures still around, but they animals don't evolve. Each species have the same talents, defenses and whatever else as they have always have. (according to the science that I look at anyway)

I wasn't trying to kick anything off, I thought I was asking entirely relevant questions! Then FT's resident philosophers came and hijacked the thread! lol

Nah, it's an old one the missus took of me a while back. We appreciated the irony then and still do. :D

No religion teaches that God is a man with a beard in the clouds! They teach that 'God' is an unknown Power or Universal Force that no human being can fathom.

And there is no science that puts religion out of the window. Infact, the more science discovers about dna the more convinced alot of the scientists who are working on this become convinced that we must have been Created. The Human Genome Project has many top level scientists that are convinced that the structure of dna is too complex for any other explanation.

Science also has no evidence at all to suggest that humans didn't spread from one source. There are theories, but no evidence. Although evolution does get taught as 'fact' I think in some schools.

Christianity does. Just search the word God into google images and voila

I come back to Adam and Eve. We know that it's impossible that we evolved from these two humans.

You even say yourself God created the big bang but according to the bible it happened in five days? What about that matey who split the river apart with his cane? Do you believe that?

Yes all scientists say that we were created but not by God. Molecules and Atoms my friend. Not snakes and apples.

Evolution is FACT. You only have to go to the depths of the ocean to see that creatures have adapted to there habitat to know that.

Most people in the world don't believe in God because they need something to help them through or for comfort or reasons like that. The religious people I know are the most head-strong folk I've ever met.

Also I don't think that the fear of death comes into it. It would be much less scary if we knew there was absolutely nothing when we died. It would be a relief for many.

Of course they do. The whole purpose of religion is to give people a quick fix to questions which can't be answered such as what is the purpose of life? It's something we aren't or probably wont ever be able to comprehend. What religion does is candy coat this and gives people an outlet to believe in something.

Maybe fear of death isn't the right term but you can't tell me religious people aren't obsessed about afterlife and the whole reason why they devote there time is in the hope that once they die they will board the golden escalator up to cloud nine.

You only have to look at those suicide bombers whose whole motive is based on a better afterlife. All religion is geared towards is life after death.
