davieG Posted 2 November 2009 Posted 2 November 2009 I remember even in the 60s you used to be able to get on and off at the Leicester Forest East Service Station we would would whiz up there on a Saturday Night / Sunday Morning for a coffee/food after everything in the city centre pretty much shut at 11:00. In those days you could do u-turns and people could be seen having picnics on the hard shoulder Apparently 3000 cars used it in the 1st 2 hours and there where breakdowns reported every 7.5 minutes as most of the cars on the roads were rust buckets with oil leaking from the engine and where being run at speeds they'd never manage before. I remember my brother had one where the foot-well in front of peddles was open to the road and covered by a bit of carpet. His accelerator peddle didn't work either so he had a piece of string tied to the mechanism under the bottom and fed through the dash which he used to pull to accelerate.
Fosse Boy Posted 2 November 2009 Posted 2 November 2009 We all know 22 is the best junction. Big fan of 20.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 2 November 2009 Posted 2 November 2009 In those days you could do u-turns and people could be seen having picnics on the hard shoulder It wasn't as if there was the odd gap you could turn round in (like on the A46) - there wasn't a central barrier at all. And no speed limit either. It's no surprise that road deaths have fallen over the years

Noble101 Posted 3 November 2009 Posted 3 November 2009 Legend has it that the Kray brothers disposed of some bodies in the cement when the section in Leicester was built.
