Hitesh Posted 3 November 2009 Posted 3 November 2009 I do a lot of rail travel and the trains are getting much better and more on time too which helps but the prices are just plain stupid! Sometimes I can get some great deals booking in advance and it costs me more on buses or car sometimes. However, they really need to sort the pricing stuff out to make it simpler.

You don't agree that there's many car journeys that could be saved if there were a decent and affordable public transport alternative? I'd happily give up my car if I could afford an alternative that was well run.

True but there is an issue with the pricing strategy and the fact there there is no consistency between the companies.

Lillehamring Posted 4 November 2009 Posted 4 November 2009 i like the way they try and justify themselves by mentioning the bargain £560 journey... naturally, i wanted to compare it to here and found the longest journey i could find (stavanger-bodø) the british journey is 710 miles by road and would take approx 13hrs to drive, the train fare and distance are in the report... the norwegian journey is 957 miles by road and would take approx 24hrs to drive, the train takes approx 27hrs (not that direct a route) the difference is, i could get on a train in 4 hours and a return ticket would cost about £300, if i went in say a fortnight, it would be a fixed price of just over 50 quid ....ahhh, the grass is still greener folks.

Monk Posted 4 November 2009 Posted 4 November 2009 Train travel should be priced much more simply. Like, by the mile. Travel < 20 miles = £0.50 per mile 20 - 100 miles = £0.45 per mile > 100 miles = £0.40 per mile That way it would be transparent and regulated.

I thoroughly enjoy rail travel, so much better than coach travel but it really is hampered by the shoddy standard of trains in this country, overpriced snacks and bad management. This becomes especially pronounced when you see the standard of trains in France, Italy etc. Privatisation of train services probably wasn't such a good idea when you look at the state-owned systems abroad.

My brother lives near Newton Abbot so an affordable journey from one end of the country to another is worth looking into - this is not it! i think you could buy a cheap car ,, tax and insure it , pay for petrol , a couple of nights stay in travelodge ( maybe markield £19 special ) and take in a foxes game on the way, and still have change out of a grand . maybe this is one for the Top Gear team to try edit; actually i think they did do something similar a while ago
