acooling08 Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 I noticed at the WBA game and at other games previosly that we seem to be unable to close attackers down. Especially Brown, we seem to back off and off back to our penalty area without putting any real pressure on the attackers or making a tackle. At WBA this cost us both goals. The first one we retreated back and forced Oakley to make a bad tackle, the second one was awful. Obviously from their point it was a great goal but we gave him so much time and space to shoot. I don't really know about a solution, maybe a battling midfielder like Lennon or maybe push the back line up a bit. Thoughts?
Koke Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 When defending there seems to be a slightly big gap between our midfield and strikers. We tend to give opposition midfield a bit too much time on the ball. I noticed that against Reading as well but they were too woeful to take advantage of it.

Personally, I thought it was more of an issue because of the midfielders and their lack of closing down rather than it being Brown and Hobbs' fault. Against QPR we were so competitive in midfield, right in the faces of their ball-playing midfielders, not sure why we didn't do that yesterday.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 Agree with you, I just posted that on the post match thread. Constantly when an opposing player has the ball and is moving forward we all back off and give them the chance to shoot. We were lucky that against QPR their shooting was not great except their goal. I think when King came off we were even more vulnerable. He did a lot of cleaning up around the back 4 but when he went off we looked weak and were lucky not to concede again.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 Its been like this all season. More noticeably when Brown gave away that penalty, (Was it at peterboro game?) Probably lack of confidence in tackling near our keepers area.

I mean imagine during the course of 90 minutes we're going to actually allow a team to score against us If yer gonna score em yer gonna let em in. It is after all what the game is all about! Probably best if you get used to it sharpish cus we're gonna let a few more in before the end of the season.
maddog Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 It's the end of the world, as we know it Got to have some sort of repetitive debate until the Plymouth game otherwise there would be nothing to talk about
Stuliasz Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 The protection for the back for has been average at best. All season, there has been a noticeable gap that due to our style, formation and type of players, we can't fill. King/Oakley/Wellens may have been deployed in this position in the past but primarily none of these are holding players. Problem is if we do recruit a midfielder of this nature, the danger is that we lose our attacking potency even more.
lcfc_jme Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 ****ing hell most people on here were jizzing about a promotion push after last Friday, now all of a sudden we have a sh*t goalkeeper and we can't tackle? Bloody Nora this place is weird.
Father Ted Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 IMO it is in fact very clever defending by Brown. He knows that he hasn't got the pace so backs off. Therefore, he can't get turned and done for pace. If he backs off, it allows other players to adjust, get back and help. It also allows Wayne to give his evil stare, resulting in the centre forward shitting himself.

Wilson_6 Posted 11 November 2009 Posted 11 November 2009 are you serious? are defence is probally are strongest place on the pitch. strong big good in the air, something weve not had in a long time, cant believe some ppl
LaxyLuke Posted 11 November 2009 Posted 11 November 2009 Hi I have just signed up to let you in on a little gossip - and as a newbie I can't start my own topic so i thought i would reply somewhere relevant. I have a friend in Sweden who is well I'm not go in to details but basically I have heard that Leicester are interested and going to make a bid for Elfsborgs Icelandic International midfielder Helgi Danielsson. All I know is he's a defensive ball winning midfielder who has a year left on his contract. Not sure if anything will come of it but as i live quite near to Leicester i though I would pass it on...
mickydeeeuk Posted 11 November 2009 Posted 11 November 2009 i think the problem (If there is one!) lies firmly with the midfield... certainly not the defence, do people really expect us not to ever concede a goal! personally ive been impressed with Brown over recent times having not been much of a fan before...he has been superb! unfortunately against the baggies wellens didnt have a game to remember, but that will happen to the best of em from time to time! i did think wellens by far had his worst game in a city shirt (again i am a fan of wellens) ...again that was one game people! to be honest i was glad when King went off tho, i dont see what people see in him all he ever does is pass the ball backwards/sideways then hides! i would like to see us playing with dyer and ngussan(sp!) on the wings especially if Howard is ever going to play again, because i think its obvious if we do have a problem its adeffinate lack of width! central mid i would play wellens and possibly oakley but preferrably someone with a bit of bite in there ..maybe adams eventually... thinking about it zidane in his prime would have done ha ha! but the defence in my opinion is fine and will only get better when Tunch comes back!

I seriously doubt we'd pay money for him though.
Jon25747 Posted 12 November 2009 Posted 12 November 2009 The second goal came because king was down injured in the centre circle and the guy strolled into where king would have been, no error there. Even the first goal was oakley tracking the man and putting in a clumsy tackle. We are pretty solid at the back IMO although i would prefer a better cm instead of king to provide more cover for the back four.

We have 2 midfielders go off in quick succesion ( one being our captain and organiser), very quickly afterwards concede 2 goals in quick succession to a team that if i remember have scored 5 goals in BOTH their previous away games... And now we are crap again.
