Jimmy Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 with the cup really a bit of a distraction I see this as a chance to try a few things out against decent opposition but with less pressure, so assuming the players I mention are fit I'd like to see the following side Weale O'Neill Morrison McGivern BernerN'Guessan King Wellens GradelHoward Gallagher we saw how shaky O'Neill looked at left back and I see this as a chance to see where he's at in his natural position of right back without fear of dropping points to promotion rivals. McGivern looked pretty good at CB in the second half against Sheffield United and did well alongside Morrison (who is probably our most inform central defend atm) in that game. Gradel and N'Guessan can operate on either flank so allow them to interchange and it also gives us a chance to see how we fair with 2 pacey wingers on the field from the star, again with little risk. May as well save Fryatt for the league so its a good chance to see Gallagher play upfront, I picked Howard but either Kermorgant or Waghorn could easily be his striker partner depending on whether we want a target man or pace alongside him. Have the likes of Hobbs, Brown Fryatt & Oakley on the bench if its not working to revert to type but I feel this is a great chance to see how we'd do if we set up to attack instead of contain as well as look at 1 or 2 fringe players. Anyway that's my thought what do others think

We normally play 3 strikers, so play them in their correct position! Gallagher needs a run in his position, up front. Along with a recall with Waghorn, and Fryatt. Could work, with Gallagher feeding in Fryatt and Waghorn. Also, its a cup match, so give some of the youngsters a go. See how ONeill performs at RightBack, and with Chamberlain on the bench.

lildave3 Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 Weale Neilson Morrison Hobbs Powell N'Guessan (Although i'd love it to be Max) King Wellens Dyer Waghorn Fryatt/Howard.
The Doctor Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 weale Neilson Hobbs Morrison Berner Gradel Wellens King Dyer Kermorgant Howard Really should play two proper wingers which means 1 one of oakley, king or wellens needs to go and i personally think that the wellens - king partnership is the best out the 3 (wellens - oakley, King - oakley, Wellens - King). Would like to see howard and kermorgant played alongside each other. From what i've seen both can hold their own on the ground and in the air.

Shrenchel Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 I'd definitely get Wellens back in amongst it.
The Doctor Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 I like this team, looks good, only think i'm unsure of is if Howard and Kermorgant are too similar. this could be a problem or it could work in our favour. When both possess a threat aerially the midfielders/defenders have more than one outlet when under pressure. Also if we hit it long to either of them they'll likely win their headers if up against one man this could prompt the opposition to tuck in the full backs to provide the centre backs support which leaves the entire wing for gradel and dyer to use without much pressure.

This addresses both the lack of pace and the reluctance of both Hobbs and Morrison to play left center back. Marginally prefer Hobbs to Morrison as a starter but that is partly to do with Morrison being more flexible as a sub. I would go with Oakley, King and Wellens in central midfield, none of this nonsense of pretending that Oakley is playing on the right though! I would push the 2 wide men well forward and play real attacking players in these roles. There job is to get forward and get into the box and threaten the goal, using pace and the treat to go wide as the option. This is where it gets fun, although there are other options, I would deploy Fryatt to the left and Waghorn right! Leading the line would be N'Guessan, powerful, quick and good in the air, like I said, fun! So; ---------------Weale---------------- O'Neil---Hobbs---McGivern--- Berner ------Oakley---King---Wellens------ -Waghorn-----N'Guessan-----Fryatt- Tin hats and Flak jacket at the ready!

Sylvie85 Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 Weale O'neil Morrison Hobbs Berner N'guessen King Wellens Dyer Brown Neilson Have decided to put a bit of pace in up front. And we could use Brown as the outlet Ball.
Vlad The Impaler Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 GK. Weale RB. O'Neill CB. Morrison CB. Hobbs LB. Berner RM. Gradel CM. Oakley CM. Wellens LM. N'Guessan ST. Fryatt ST. Waghorn Would love to see this team played, has real potential. I like Neilson and have defended him alot in the recent weeks, and McGivern but I would drop them both for this game. O'Neill has real potential and I don't think he's too young at all, in his natural position he could really be an asset to our team, he's fast, goes forward and can put a good tackle in, some people on here will think it's a bit of an over reaction putting him in but it's only a cup game. I'd definetely give Gradel a run out, so he can show us what we've been missing and prove a point to a few doubters. The reason I would drop King is not because I think he's an 'Invisible Player' by any means, i'm a big fan but I think we just need that steel in the middle of the park for this one and the Oakley/Wellens partnership looked really good at the start of the season, it also gives the chance for two wingers to play for once. I've chosen Fryatt and Waghorn upfront because we may opt for more of a passing game, instead of the predictable and boring hoof ball we've been playing for the last 2 or 3 games. I doubt very much Nige will pick this team, but it would be a great pointer to where we are at and what the future hold for LCFC with a few young players in there.

Thracian Posted 17 January 2010 Posted 17 January 2010 I'd like to think the cup match will be used by Pearson to field an all-round team with the mobility to score the goals we will need to have the faintest chance of securing promotion. But I don't see how we can do it. We just don't have the personnel. Despite my pleas we have no fast, attacking full-backs who are comfortable on the ball. We have no-one at centre-back who can pass either nor who can pose a significant goal threat at set-pices. We have no specialist set-piece taker and no-one who has anywhere near mastered the art of crossing. Waghorn excepted we have no pace in attack and rarely play with the width which might allow fast players to exploit the gaps between stretched defenders anyway. In other words week-in, week out we give ourselves a massive voluntary handicap. For the first time ever I honestly don't know what I'd do because I wouldn't have wanted this particular balance of squad players for anything. Ironically there's no doubt they are individually more reliable than our other teams over the past six years. But the weaknesses are permanent without new signings. There's no changing them, even with coaching, different tactics or rollicking. What we have is a team of hard-working, generally honest and reliable plodders. Weale would be in goal, that's easy. The back four is a mess. Defensively okay against average attacks but frustratingly limited once we have possession. I don't see O'Neill as a realistic alternative at this stage, few favour pushing Oakley back, so we're stumped with inevitable compromise. Central midfield is frustrating because two's not enough but three's a crowd and leaves us short of the width that might give us goals. Again I'd favour Oakley coming forward from full-back to join midfield when we have possession thus helping boost our numbers in midfield. This would mean the middle four could read: Gradel, Wellens, King, Dyer. As for the attack, I'd really like Waghorn and DJ but would be reasonably happy with Waghorn and Gallagher if only to see if Gallagher can provide the link necessary to help provide passing options for the midfield and to see if Waghorn's pace can help unsettle and unlock a stubborn defence. But if Gallagher does that job he needs to show the energy and willingness to get himself into the box consistently. The above equals much experimentation but we cannot delay any longer. We're falling off the pace and will continue to do so if we don't play the game faster, pass the ball better and have far more all-round support. I
