lcfc_jme Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 No. Berner back in when fully fit for McGivern, same with Tunch at Brown's disposal, and we're pretty much settled. If anything, we need to be more incisive and creative up-top really. Defending is not really our problem, it's creating and sustaining pressure and killing teams off.
Fosse Boy Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Dunno if City need to improve there defence, but some posters need to improve their grammar.
ousefox Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Our defence probably does need to improve a bit, but please remember we beat both Sheffield teams and Swansea before this poor run. We are just outside the playoffs with a game in hand that could put us into a relatively strong playoff position if we win. Stop overreacting.

samuel Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Clearly, that was a fook up and for that I apologise profusely
lcfc_jme Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Mmm. Yes they do! >_< Look at the thread title.. Dear God.
martyn Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Berner back for the absolute car crash albino and Taylor in/Tunchev back to replace Wayne Beckenbauer and we should be fine.
Matt Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Neilson's already been removed so that's gone 50% to improving our defence, Berner > McGivern (When Berner is fit) and our defence will be fine. IMO.

Matt Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Yeah, as clearly demonstrated by shipping 4 goals... Exactly, I blame McGivern.
Salieri Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Yeah, as clearly demonstrated by shipping 4 goals... Yeah but thats all McGiverns fault. Kick him out the team and EVERYTHING will be fine.
colbo68 Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 i mean, come on, we lost to Swansea, drew to Ipswich and now lost 4-2 to Cardiff letting in 2 goals in injury time! i mean come on, that's awful the problem for me is the insistence that Pearson has in playing his favourite players, completely regardless of whether they are currently on form or not. Lets take Wayne Brown for example - following in Pearson's footsteps as a tough, no nonsense centre-back, mean both off and on the pitch, it is obvious that the pair are mutually existing up each other's arseholes. It was so so clear, following the Forest game and since that Wayne Brown DOES NOT HAVE THE PACE to perform well at this level - a fact again today shockingly demonstrated in his race for the ball mid-way through the second half with Jay Bothroyd. Brown was at full pelt and looking at one point like a pantomime horse as Bothroyd gracefully sprinted past him to get to the ball first and with a couple of feet to spare. Brown, for me, regardless of his mental presence in the dressing room would be the first player I would drop from the side and instead my centre-back pairing would be the same as last season (ie. Hobbs/Morrison) Coming home from the Cardiff game today, my son and I quickly agreed that last season's side is actually better than this season's (gilbert better than Nielsen, Mattock better than McGivern, Gradel better than Gallagher, DJ better than Kermo) I'm getting fed-up with some of Pearson's signings this year (McGivern, Nielsen, Brown, Kermo) because some of the football we are playing at the moment is utter shite, and, I agree, this is demonstrated defensively more than anywhere else currently.
maddog Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 Don't think it's a defensive problem conceding those 2 late goals, just one of things that always seems to happen to us. Lack of concentration, just a freak occurrence, but defence, na you can't blame them. Only the top four and Palace have conceded less goals than us away in the League, and only Newcastle, Swansea, Cardiff, Doncaster and Preston have conceded less goals than us at home. We have the 4th best defence in the League for fook sake. We've conceded 1 goal less than West Brom have this season. The problem is Newcastle, Forest, and West Brom have scored fook loads of goals. Our problem is lack of goals all around the team, which lies with the midfield and strikers not defence.
eleven points Posted 23 January 2010 Posted 23 January 2010 14th Best average goals per game. We need a real quality attacking midfielder and more goals from our current midfielders. http://stats.football365.com/dom/ENG/D1/glsforavg.html At the moment we're around the Ipswich, Cov, Sheffield Wednesday amount of goals scored. That really aint great when you think about how shit they all are , something we've definitely got to improve on. Another thing to note is for November, December and January we were actually a mid table side. I think February is going to be a MASSIVE month for us, with all the fixture congestion, our squad (Gallagher, Kermo in particular) really need to step it up imo.

Our plodding defence creates constant problems. We are forever having to select teams which have defence-minded attackers to make up for the shortcomings of the back line. Our defenders offer very little in attack and, in fact, concede possession far too easily. What we're left with in midfielders and attackers often doing a job and a half with some defenders only doing half a job. This, of course, takes vital energy from the attackers, often leaving us short of movement and numbers. Hence our generally cautious approach for League games when we seem wary of playing attackers whose defensive qualities are limited or questionable. Trouble is it means we're mostly going to struggle for goals in League games and whenever we have to chase a game - as against Cardiff at the death- then we're going to be vulnerable. We badly need fast, mobile, defenders who can pass so that we have a team capable of supporting in numbers and so that flair players can be included and helped by having options on the ball. Presently, at least in the League, there is so little movement and support for attackers in possession that they have to wait for options, play something hopeful or lose the ball through the lack of a pass. Gareth Bale for Spurs gave the perfect example yesterday of the sort of fast, creative full-back we should be looking for or producing ourselves. PS: Even on the television highlights I witnessed we seemed to lack cover in front of the defensive backline. Oakley and Wellens have their qualities but this aspect has never struck me as one of them. I don't think Pearson was wrong to exclude King - he was badly due a rest. But when he is absent there needs to be someone else capable of filling his role. As it was our central defence seemed alarmingly vulnerable. But doubtless someone will tell me the highlights painted the wrong picture entirely and thatmy concerns are groundless.

This seems to mean that to create anything we need to play with two wide players. None of those tried so far are really up to the job and offer little defensively. Of course if we had central midfielders who really offered attacking options then this would help but unfortunately we don't seem to have that sort of player at the club, neither do we retain possession enough. All this coupled with an attack largely incapable of scoring or creating means that our tactics this season have required the approach we have seen often enough. It would have been interesting to see how a fit Tunchev would have coped in this league. many of our attacks last season actually started with him at the back playing simple forward passes to colleagues. Without this sort of defender our defence looks to have little to offer in terms of keeping possession, in creating attacking play and the one paced dimension of it has already been shown up by any sides with pace up front or in midfield.
