Hobbs considered for England U21s

Leicester City defender Jack Hobbs is being considered for an international call-up.

Hobbs has been one of City's most impressive performers in recent months and manager Nigel Pearson believes he can play at the highest level.

His man-of-the-match performance against Cardiff City last Saturday was watched by Steve Wigley, assistant to England Under-21 manager Stuart Pearce.

It is not the first time Pearce has had the City centre-back watched this season.

Hobbs has played an integral part in City's promotion push, and his call-up claims will be strengthened if they can clinch a spot in the Premier League.

England Under-21s do not have a fixture until September when they face Portugal in a European Championship qualifier, but that will not stop Pearce keeping tabs on City's star defender.

Hobbs has no shortage of admirers within the City camp and Pearson has stated he believes the 21-year-old has the potential to play at the very top.

"He is still a young player but I am sure he will be able to play in the Premier League, I have no doubts about that," he said.

"Technically he is a good player but his character is also right and he is level-headed.

"He is maturing but he has had the benefit of playing alongside experienced players as well.

"He has had exposure to the right challenges during his development.

"Last year was a good year for him in the sense that he was pretty regular for us during a successful title-winning season.

"I have no doubts he can play at the highest level."

Team-mate Richie Wellens echoed his manager's praise and said Hobbs' could go to the very top of the game.

"He is a big lad and he wins the first ball," said Wellens.

"As a midfield player that is great because you don't really want to be tracking runners and getting second balls.

"If he wins the first ball, then great.

"He has long legs and blocks things. He can get better on the ball because he is quality on the ball. If he can improve that, he has every chance of going all the way."

Hobbs' form and flourishing partnership with Michael Morrison has eased concerns over the injuries to City's other centre-backs, Wayne Brown, Alex Bruce and Aleksandar Tunchev.

Brown missed the Cardiff and Crystal Palace victories because of a tight hamstring but should be available to face Coventry on Sunday, although he is not guaranteed to walk straight back into the side.

However, Alex Bruce could be out for several weeks with a stomach muscle strain, while Tunchev is out for the season following more knee surgery.

I think he deserves it. He has got better and better since he first joined us and I just hope we can keep hold of him for a good while yet. One of the few players for me that may be able to take the step up to the Premier League.

Just seen this on Mercury site. Would be good for the lad and he has definately earned it! But this could cause bigger clubs to come sniffing and yes I would love it if he stayed with us for a good LONG while.

That's great news. He's going from strength to strength and seems to be getting better all the time. He has all the right assets to be a top defender in the near future.

Hope he does get called up, excellent performances recently (especially against Forest and Cardiff) and it's good recognition for the club as well.

Delighted we managed to get him permanently.

It's a shame Michael Morrison is just 22, I think if he was sixth months younger he'd be in with a strong shout as well. He's a lot better than Stearman was when he got called up IMO.

Hobbs England under 21 + (if) Leicester fail to get promoted = bid from a premership club and we loose him?

I really hope, he came from down the road from me, local hero!!

Fully deserved if it becomes true. Him and Morrison should be the bedrock for our team for many years to come (hopefully).

He's eligible for this Euro U21 Championships.

If anyone seen England U21s last game, they need improvement in their backline pronto.

When I spoke to him last season I said to him that one day he would one day play for England!

Hi said we'll see - well Jack Hobbs, the time has come! (nearly)

Delighted for Jaaaaack, the guy's an absolute rock. Just hope the news doesn't have an adverse effect on him, especially with the games we've got coming up and the playoffs being within touching distance of guaranteed.

Hobbs set for England call up but not a match til September lol not quite set for a call up is he. He deserves an opportunity, I wondered why he was being over-looked the last squad. He's been our best player for the last month or two in my opinion.

A big opportunity at centre half for England in next few years, can't see why Hobbs can't take that chance in years to come.

I'm really pleased for the lad, deffo one of my favorites for Player of the Season. It was also really nice to read that interview in The Soar magazine with Browny and the things he said about Hobbs...put a big smile on my face.

It must have been a bit of a wrench coming from Liverpool to here but this can show other players that if you can take your chances (with us!) anything is possible!!

Certainly deserves it after the season he's had. Been superb for us. Good luck to him and hope it becomes a reality for the lad.
