Dr Pop Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Evening Foxes. Just back from a long day out at the Walkers Stadium. We left Cardiff at 7.30am this morning (and it was freezing!) and after a service stop at Corley and then meeting the police at Leicester Forest East we got to the ground at about 11.45am. I was glad to see the sun shining and managed to grab a quick pint at the Local Hero, meeting up with a few of our London based supporters - I know it's a home pub but apparently the queue at the bar at the Counting House was ten deep so we mixed it with the locals! Anyway, onto the game. I was probably too nervous to really enjoy it, but it was a good game of football - both teams certainly went looking to win the game and it must have been good to watch for the neutrals. I though you started well and you looked dangerous from the handful of corners you earned in the early stages. After the first 15 minutes or so though I thought we dominated the rest of the first half and should have grabbed at least one goal - Chopra in particular should have found the net at least once. The second half I thought was much more even, until Whittingham stepped up with his excellent free kick. After that I though we took control again and looked the more likely to score a second - that was until the last few minutes when you appeared to find a second wind from somewhere and threw everything at us. Marshall had to make a couple of superb saves to stop you from equalising and I was grateful when the final whistle went. I though both sets of fans were noisy - it was certainly lively in the away section! There were the usual hand gestures etc being exchanged at the end and a bit of posturing outside the coaches, but I don't think anything serious occurred thankfully. As for the 2nd leg, believe me this game is far from over. It was great to get a win at your place, but most Cardiff fans remember when we did the same at Stoke in the 2002 play offs and then blew it at home in extra time. There will be a lot of pressure on us on Wednesday and much will depend on how we handle it. The first goal could well turn out to be vital. To those of you making the journey to Cardiff I hope you enjoy your day (but not of course the result!). Hopefully it'll be another cracker.
AndyBrew Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 on balance you deserved your win hopefully you'll bottle it on Wednesday night although my head says otherwise
moseeds Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Agreed I thought both teams were nervous but cardiff were the better side. All to play for on wednesday
Joe. Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Cardiff deserved the win today and I thought your fans were excellent. Sitting next to you lot when we scored was horrible though, I didn't look once.
Scow Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 A draw would have been a fair result on balance. There wasn't much between the two teams, but Cardiff did have the better of the clear-cut chances until the last ten minutes. Fryatt should have scored, and perhaps we should have had a penalty, yet Cardiff had very good chances through Chopra and Bothroyd. I always felt that Cardiff's front four were going to pose a greater attacking threat than what we had to offer. I thought Hobbs and Bruce did very well throughout to handle them. Praise must go to Berner for his handling of Burke, who ripped us apart in the league game in Cardiff. The positive for us is that Howard will be back for the second leg - I reckon he could play a key role on the night. Despite Cardiff being 1-0 up, I think Jones will be in a difficult position in terms of setting his team up. He doesn't need to chase the game, but the home fans won't accept their team sitting back for 90 minutes.
nothin2seehere Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 A fantastic game, only my third LCFC home game and thoroughly enjoyed it. Could have done without Whittingham's goal though, and how Chopra didn't score...well - very thankful cause it could have been all over inside 20 minutes! That aside, I have a question for you Dr Pop, and one which comes from the amusement I had at watching the Cardiff supporters arrive on the coaches. What's the thing with putting your hands on your heads and making head explosion style arm movements? Simply couldn't work it out, is it a Welsh equivalent of the V sign I certainly don't remember it from growing up 10 miles from Cardiff!
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 It is funny but I am not too bothered about the result and think we may find it easier playing away. We've got to win at the new Cardiff stadium one day, 1-0 is easily turned around and with Howard and Vaughan back, it will be more difficult for Cardiff IMO. Really confident to a long match on Wednesday night.

It doesn't really mean anything - a big City and Wales fan called Phil Stead (aka Eric The Red) started it in the late 1980's with a few mates - it was when the Ayatollah in Iran had just died and there were lots of news pictures of his followers banging their heads in some sort of mourning ritual. Anyway Phil and a few of his mates started doing it at away games and it caught on - before long there were chants of 'Do The Ayatollah' and all the away end would be doing it. Amazingly 20 years later it's around!
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 Sometimes a 1-0 lead in a two legged game is a poisioned challice - One team have no doubt what they have to do, the other can be a little unsure. Luckily for Cardiff, they have two undroppable strikers (not saying Boothroyd's brilliant, but Chopra doesn't strike me as someone you can play on his own) meaning they shouldn't conceed space to us by playing just the one up front. Only gutter is the games on the same night as the Fulham game - I would have liked to watch that.
ramboacdc Posted 9 May 2010 Posted 9 May 2010 i wouldnt say Cardiff "deserved" their win in the second half. The ref got some decisions wrong for both us and cardiff. first half we started well but cardiff found their feet and blocked us out and we kept bothroyd and chopra quiet the best we could. The 2nd half when we changed our formation shook your defence a lot and towards the end it was anyones game until that free kick (but i wont voice my opinion on that situation in respect) Should be a cracking game wednesday and im hoping for a high scoring affair (for us of course) Also your fans were good today. they made me laugh when they got off the busses and conga'd to the turnstile.

Only gutter is the games on the same night as the Fulham game - I would have liked to watch that. I agree - being 1-0 up is by no means an easy position with the home game to come - obviously better than not being ahead, but do we defend what we have or go for it? Back in 2002 when we played Stoke we were 2-0 at their place but they got a late goal to bring it back to 2-1. If we'd have kept it 2-0 I think the 2nd leg would have been a formality. In the 2nd leg we tried to hold onto what we had and ended up conceding just before the end of 90 mins - then in extra time we conceded another to go out. It was definitely one of the worst defeats City fans can remember - the place was like a morgue at the end. The fans certainly haven't forgotten that night and I think the players have also learnt from our collapse of last season, so I think we will go for it on Wednesday - try and get a goal up and then we have a 2 goal cushion to defend. That will of course open up things for yourselves, so this tie is far from over. As I said earlier in the thread - I think the 1st goal will be vital on Wednesday.
AyewJoking Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 Cant see us winning by 2 goals at Cardiff. Its a very big ask.
Babylon Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 Cant see us winning by 2 goals at Cardiff. Its a very big ask. Win 1-0 and win on pennos then.
Austin Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 I reckon we'll win wednesday, not sure by how many goals or whether it'll go to ET + pens .. just got the feeling, I even said yesterday to my uncle I reckon we'll lose today.
CheshireFox Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 i can definitely see us getting a goal back, but then i can see cardiff nicking it in ET because we will get hit by the nerves again... wish that wasnt true but after yesterday's nerves i think theres just too much pressure involved. hope im wrong though
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 It's far from over, but Cardiff were worthy winners on the day. Well done to them. I'm just hoping we can return the compliment on Wednesday night, but I think we now have just too much to do!

Guest DavidJCW Posted 10 May 2010 Posted 10 May 2010 PAH! Disagree with a lot of people on here who thought Cardiff were the better side... I thought both teams were even and it should have been a draw... that would have been the fair result. Had it not been for some questionable refereeing, it might well have been.
