As someone pointed out, in the real world no-one plays 3-5-2 anymore, it is far too easy to counter for the attacking side and that's before you look at the issues involved in trying to explain it to players who were all brought up playing a flat bak 4.

However, the issue remains the same as it has been for some time.

Our most effective striker is at his best playing off a front man, whether that front man is Howard or some one younger is irrelevant.

Effectively that commits us to playing 4-4-2, but if we play 2 wide man we invariably get over run in center midfield which led to that 'half and half' selection of Dyer wide left and Oakley narrow right, horrible!

4-3-3 looks to be the answer, but only if Pearson is confident enough to play 3 men up, mostly he heaps so much defensive responsibility on the wide men that we end up playing 4-5-1, even at home!

The best football we have played this season has either been 4-3-3 with N'Guessan/Dyer and Waghorn getting well forward to support Fryatt or 4-5-1 with Oakley playing well forward in support.

Sadly Fryatts injury and Pearson's naturally cautious reaction put a stop to that.

What we need is a creative midfielder in the Muzzy Izzet mould. We have enough Def mids

A quality creative midfield player in the Adams/Koren class would be great, but after loosing £15-20m in two seasons, I doubt we could afford anyone good enough to make a difference.

At this moment we have just two central midfielders good enough to start and possibly Oakley as backup. The starters, King and Wellens are not defensive players, King is a 'box to box' player who can score and would likely do so more often if he was given a more attacking role. Wellens is more defensive but not a proper holding midfielder, he may be feisty and combative but for me simply does not produce enough either in defense or going forward.

I would go for the low cost option of getting a genuine holding player, (Harper??? don't know,) but such a player would release King to get forward and give sufficient cover so that we can deploy our most creative player, Gallagher, as the playmaker.

Adams was signed for only 500k so it can be done on the cheap, just a shrewd bit of scouting required.

Yes there is some hope and our scouting has generally been pretty good, but even you must admit that Adams for £500k is probably the exception, not the rule.

Just pointing out that the more established creative players that some on this forum have been calling for are probably out of our price bracket.

In the Merc today it says he was one of the free agents City were holding talks with before the exit of the management yesterday!

Quote: "Only full-back Tom Kennedy had been recruited so far this summer, on a free transfer from Rochdale, but the Mercury has learned City were in talks with several possible Bosman signings, including former Reading and Sheffield United midfielder James Harper."
